Its actually not major damage as its only the top plate that has actually broken, this goes over the top of the wheel and then the screws go into this and bolt it to the wheel. I thought at first it was the point where this attaches inside the hub but its just the top plate has somehow sheered off completely.

When did all this happen?

When did all this happen?

Marty tried attaching a brick to his wheel as ballast.

Was last nite on the gta at blackwood practice server, was just getting the hang of the low powered beast. Still very drifty and lots of fast hands needed to catch the slides until on the last turn while .5 up on my pb catching the slide ripped the wheel off in my hands lol.

But after seeing how weak this part is id avoid the brick ballast id attached to the wheel. Its a shame as I was enjoying that combo and its been raining non stop in melbourne last few days so tennis seems unlikely tonight. I will take it to the shop this arvo but I doubt they will do a straight replacement. I wont tell them its only a minor piece thats broken at first though just incase.

Bit hard to tell what happened by the photos. Especially the Ansel Adams one.
i hope it's not something all G27s do..

I think wally is right about the brick...

Ballast sounds like a good idea..

You see the round plastic cover that goes on the wheel, meant to be there but it isnt. The way this assembles together is it just slots over the top and the screws go through it and thats what bolts it to the base. They have a little flange at the bottom and this is all that mounts the wheel to the base.

Somehow this has sheered off at each screw mount but if the screws would be taken out and a new top round plate would be used it would be back to normal.

So its suprisingly a very flimsy weak cheap piece of plastic and maybe mine had a manufacturing defect that caused this failure.

Hope the fix is quick Marty!!  :)
(I think the Ansel Adam photo clearly shows that the main problem with Marty's wheel is a dark moody inner demon combined with a perpetual longing to discover what lies over the lake i.e. what's it like to beat GB, which has led to a violent disposition and unfortunately the wheel was the innocent victim of this rage...  ;D)

I actually base my racing style on Ansel Adam's photography.

Marty, or Mary as we know him. Does put in a few 1,000 hours a week of AC. His G27 has had more abuse then his stiff front... if you know what I mean..

His G27 is lucky to turn at all then from what I've heard about his post-race celebrations... ;D

Especially one im not even in the field for I noticed, thought I entered but am unlikely to be available most weeks. But having to work in the rain the last few days and its been pretty constant Id be surprised if any tennis club in the area isnt flooded already.

Tennis club? I think you're doing it wrong. Try a tennis racket.

Just dropped the wheel off at the shop, unfortunatly they need to send it back so probably be out for a week or 2 at least. Shame as I was looking forward to the next tuesday season and quite likely would have been free tonight.

Dont know how you would handle getting beaten by a keyboard player. But Im sure id suck so much and just end up crashing into everyone for some thats just regular racing but I try to do a little better.  :D

I don't know what the problem is. I was using my foxtel remote last night. Only 3 seconds off the pace

So. Did they offer a courtesy wheel at the shop?

Marty. Ok look, i know my advice has been at best, unhelpful...
It really is a bummer you are out of action for two weeks. I do have a spare wheel. it cost about $60... That's why it is spare.
I could express parcel post it to you, for about $120 postage...

Again. sorry you broke your stuff.

*hugs

Its been sent away so lets hope logitech also have a spare piece or spare wheel whichever they decide. Fingers crossed I can get into the first rnd of the p1 season but I doubt I will get it back much sooner then that of even in time for that.

Do they do repairs in Australia? I can imagine it will take the full 2 weeks. I'd say 3 weeks. 4 weeks I'd be getting peeved at them though. And surly it's cheaper for them to just replace your wheel, make a bit of money out of shipping.
Better a new wheel than a angry customer with a wheel that might need further repairs
Title: Re: Martys g27
Post by: marty on May 19, 2015, 05:10:36 PM
Well hopefully they see it and just authorise a new wheel which could get it back quickest. I doubt they do repairs here at all or even carry spare parts. If this is a common fault then likely they could keep some spares as the part is just a basic cheap plastic piece that needs to be replaced.

Seeing my g25 took a lot of abuse it was quite a suprise to see this fail so majorly in a fairly short time period. I think bolting the wheel to the desk solid does put more load through it as in the past a very drifty car I tended to just rip the wheel off the desk. Now that load goes straight back through the wheel onstead and being just a weak plastic piece this looks fairly likely to fail if anything will.

Ive had mine bolted to metal plate and haven't had any issues... yet.

Did you keep your G25? You could have used the parts on that.

I actually just had a call from the store asking about it as they said its an odd failure. Wanted to know if I had dropped it or used an aftermarket wheel on it.

They said they are sending pics to logitech tonight and will have more info tomorrow and said that likely I may need to pay for repairs. I told the guy the broken piece cant cost more then $5 anyway and reminded him to check my purchase history from their store and also the fact I havent returned a single thing since 2006 which was my first purchase there. I did say I can pay for repairs but it will also likely make me choose another store for future pc purchases if a 12 month warranty has no meaning lol. Im sure with the amount I have spent with them they will try and deal with this asap and find a way to not charge reapir costs for a product that failed inside the warranty period.

I did check the g25 and took the top plate off that thinking I could use it but it had a different mount pattern so it didnt fit. G25 actually has a more solid plastic used for this and the g27 is much thinner with a more fragile feel to it. My g25 plastic plate was still fine with no fractures after years of use so odd that the g27 broke like this.

I knew it. Even though you guys look smooth as silk, you have to be quite aggressive with your wheel to correct the car. I don't think I'm being aggressive enough.

Ps. Why don't you use your g25 in the mean time?

Post by: marty on May 20, 2015, 10:55:02 AM
The g25 broke which is why I got the g27.  ;) But that one was just through lots of use as it lasted a heck of a lot longer then I would have ever expected. Main reason I got a g27 is becauze of how oong that g25 lasted and the other wheels I was interested in werent yet available and far too expensive.

I just got called back from the shop and logitech said its a fairly common fault and so they are replacing it with a brand new unit. They have provided a new unit for me to pick up today already so good to see I will make the first round next tuesday. I would have been suprised if this was a rare fault after seeing the design and how it broke.

Awesome result mate. well done! Maybe put something with a bit of give between the wheel and your desk. Like some rubber. I've actually found a big piece of old leather about 8mm thick. This has 'silenced' my wheel a fair bit. I use a racing rig though which has a bit of give in the wheel support anyway

Picked it up yesterday afternoon bonus of being next door to the shop lol. Would have sucked had they screwed me over and Id need to go elsewhere to buy my pc crap.

Gave the wheel a good workout in the gta last nite on one of my servers and didnt break it. Looks like a rare rain free thirsday nite in Melbourne so unlikely you will get to see your beloved bieber on track. Sorry Dick maybe give that skin to someone else if you want to keep your eyes on the road and not on your bieber shrine during the race.

your car is the same as Guybrush's except blue. I can't give it to anyone else unless their name is Marty..
