Assetto Corsa / Whats involved with a Dslam backhaul upgrade these days?
« on: November 14, 2014, 09:45:54 PM »
Well we are all moved in but far from settled into a new house/area. no routine, it's complete chaos.... The internet turned on the the other day and it's super slow at night. Pings of 280+ and very slow DL's
I looked on the Telstra web site and found my Exchange is getting a dslam backhaul upgrade in 3 months time, I have a feeling we are all sharing internet in town and is peaking the exchange out every night on adsl,

My question is for anyone that may  know, will the backhaul upgrade put in adsl2+ or will it keep adsl but keep the true speed at peak (no more sharing)

Upgrade isn't scheduled until March 2015 so either way I wont be racing online for a while yet  :'(

News / The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Review: Maxwell Mark 2
« on: September 21, 2014, 02:35:21 PM »

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the biggest story in the GPU industry over the last year has been over what isn’t as opposed to what is. What isn’t happening is that after nearly 3 years of the leading edge manufacturing node for GPUs at TSMC being their 28nm process, it isn’t being replaced any time soon. As of this fall TSMC has 20nm up and running, but only for SoC-class devices such as Qualcomm Snapdragons and Apple’s A8. Consequently if you’re making something big and powerful like a GPU, all signs point to an unprecedented 4th year of 28nm being the leading node.

We start off with this tidbit because it’s important to understand the manufacturing situation in order to frame everything that follows. In years past TSMC would produce a new node every 2 years, and farther back yet there would even be half-nodes in between those 2 years. This meant that every 1-2 years GPU manufacturers could take advantage of Moore’s Law and pack in more hardware into a chip of the same size, rapidly increasing their performance. Given the embarrassingly parallel nature of graphics rendering, it’s this cadence in manufacturing improvements that has driven so much of the advancement of GPUs for so long.

News / Gaming SSD Myths, what you should know....
« on: June 07, 2014, 07:56:13 AM »
So recently I have been hearing some chatter that a ssd is a must for gaming and can reduce fps stutters,  well I'm a huge fan of ssd's and run my OS on one, have done so since there introduction, but also run a good old fashion hdd for gaming content. It makes sense to me, when I turn on my system I want it to boot as quickly as possible and I want windows sitting on something fast. So a 60 gig ssd fits perfectly,  although now prices have come down considerably would change my OS ssd to a 120 gig, but I will still keep fighting the fight and keep windows on a diet.

So enough of my drible and onto a article that compares directly swap in swap out of hdd to ssd with real gaming results.

News / Gaming Audio Myths: Avoid The BS & Save Your Audio Life
« on: June 05, 2014, 12:05:23 PM »
I had been asked recently about what a DAC is and what it does, I knew very little since I found one bundled with my headset I purchased recently and still learning a lot about them. This video also covers what I had thought for a long time in regards to sound cards Vs on board sound and why "built gaming machines" where money isn't an issue and you want the best of the best, they still don't put in sound cards to their top end gaming systems.

News / Woman Attacked by a Crazed High Elf
« on: May 25, 2014, 05:17:21 PM »

A woman in Portland, Oregon, USA was shocked when she came under attack in her car from a High Elf. A man dressed in chain mail and helmet, and wielding a sword attacked the woman as she was sat in her BMW. Police were called as originally the woman believed she was under attack by a pirate. However when the police arrived they realised she was mistaken and actually being attacked by an Elf, who had hopped onto her bonnet and started to slash her tyres.

So just another day in Portland Oregon, well no, it’s not an area which experiences High Elf attacks. Konrad Bass, 30, of Glendale, was arrested by officers on the scene, in his full regalia and it turned out he had taken his title of High Elf, literally as he was found to be high on LSD. When he was arrested, Bass, identified himself as a “high-elf engaged in battle with the evil Morgoth.” Police cited Bass for criminal mischief and taken to a hospital to come down from his high.

Bass, had been taking part in Monday Funday at the Colonel Summers Park in southeast Portland where likeminded individuals (crazies and weirdoes) gather. Here they drink, take drugs and do all sorts of odd activities. Bass was with friends who had got together to organize a fantasy battle filled with elaborate costumes and fake weaponry, which explains his outfit at the time of the attack. Bass had on him an arsenal of weapons, which included; bamboo javelin, green lightsaber, machete, a hubcap shield, a master sword strapped to his back and a toy battle-axe.

Due to getting high Bass and his friends never got to do imaginary battle and left the park around 10pm. After spending the night tripping balls and hanging out by himself, Bass emerged next morning as his Jaypar Prakkari character, and still drug addled he decided he was being chased and took on the morning rush hour traffic. Which is where he attacked the freaked out woman’s BMW thinking it was a mythical creature.

The woman was left shaken and slightly confused after the ordeal and luckily the car was not too badly damaged only suffering from a few puncture marks. Bass was later interviewed by Vocativ, where he explained the whole situation, he said: “That woman was totally bad-vibing me, and I guess I just took it to the next level, I wasn’t in my right mind. I was still rocking my new pair of elf ears.”

Whilst he was out, he mistook the ladies BMW for a shape shifting demon as you do, hence why he went on a rampage, he said: “I hopped on her hood and tried to pierce her tires with my master sword. I was trying to prove a point. Don’t mess with a dark elf,”

Bass takes his elfing duties seriously along with battling evil Morgoth, the original dark lord and master of Sauron in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, Bass is heavily involved in Live Action Roleplaying (LARP). He also spends his time writes fantasy novels under the name Konrad McKane.

According to the interview with Vocativ, this isn’t the first time Bass has taken illicit drugs and turned into a mythical creature. He said: “The last time I did drugs, I turned into a freakin’ dragon,”

This unbelievable footage shows the gruesome moment a worm bursts through the dead corpse of a praying mantis in a scene akin to the classic Sci-Fi film .

The video shows the praying mantis walking across the floor while the person holding the camera prods it before killing it with insect repellant.

But seconds later something can be seen moving at the rear of the insect and then a huge worm bursts out and wriggles across the floor.

Experts shown the video by German newspaper Bild said it was clearly a parasite that had been eating alive the praying mantis.

They said it appeared to be a horsehair worm or Nematomorpha.

The praying mantis is a protected insect in Germany where it is extremely rare but it is not clear where the video was shot.

The video was posted last May but only went viral this week when it was highlighted by the German newspaper's science page.

Some of viewers on You Tube expressed doubts about the authenticity of the video, but Professor Christopher Darling from the University of Toronto said it's a fairly common phenomenon.

He said: "I am pretty sure that this is real, and not a hoax. I have seen and photographed similar things a number of times."

Darling, who is also a senior curator of entomology at the Royal Ontario Museum, said the worm was likely tightly packed inside the abdomen of the insect until the insect died.

"And yes, they do look very long, but they are very skinny," he wrote.

The experts said that nematomorph hairworms do not just colonise the belly of their hosts, they eat them alive causing erratic behaviour that can make the insects to fall into water - perfect for the parasite as they need water to reproduce.

In 2002, researchers investigated anecdotal reports of insects infected with the parasite "committing suicide" by jumping into water.

The researchers compared the behaviour of crickets infected with the worm against uninfected crickets, and found the infected ones were more likely to jump into the water.

Water is fatal for the crickets, but the parasite relies on the water to reproduce.

The worms can grow to two metres long, and the adults live freely in water, but the larvae are parasitic on various insects and crustaceans.

Cat who rescued child from dog attack invited to throw first pitch at baseball game

Video: Cat saves boy from dog attack (warning: video contains graphic images).

Tara, the California cat that became a YouTube sensation after being caught on video saving a boy from a dog attack, has been invited to "throw" the first pitch at a minor league baseball game, Bakersfield Blaze officials said on Friday.

Video footage showed a dog dragging four-year-old Jeremy from his tricycle in a driveway in Bakersfield.

Tara, the family's cat, ran to the rescue, broadsided the dog, and chased it away from the child. She then returned to the boy.

"Thankfully, it wasn't worse. My son is fine," the child's father, Roger Triantafilo, wrote in a posting with the video.

Local minor league baseball team the Bakersfield Blaze has invited the cat, assisted by the Triantafilo family, to throw the first pitch at a May 20 game.

"We will be attempting to have her throw out the first pitch. Now, how that goes off, we'll see, but the idea is to have her pitch the ball," said Philip Guiry, assistant general manager for the Blaze.

Jeremy will also pitch a ball.

The dog, described as an eight-month-old Labrador-Chow mix, is scheduled to be euthanised four days after the game, according to Bakersfield police.

The Triantafilo family could not be reached for comment.
