Gaia Sky - Discover the Milky Way in a new way.
« on: May 15, 2018, 07:45:49 AM »
Previously the best set of data on the whole Milky Way covered approx. 100 million stars. New public data is now available via Gaia and the 3D map is now @ 1.6 billion stars(approx 1%), I think they said 200 million asteroids and I believe in some cases exo plants and other rare objects. Now you can zoom into each and every single star found by Gaia.

Find out more here:

You can view it via windows desktop or in VR both Oculus and Vive are supported.

desktop exe is on the link below. To setup VR just google Gaia VR and you should find instructions.

Is that a true 1.6 billion stars, or an actual 1.6 thousand million? ???
I hate it when scientists get that word wrong. >:(

Einstein said there is no universal definition of "billion". More or less. It's all relative to your country of reference :)

No, I disagree with Einstein!
It's not my opinion, it's in the word itself:
billion = bi-million = 1m^2
trillion = tri-million = 1m^3
quadrillion = I think you get it by now......
That's the beauty of a constructed word, if you know the words it's made from, you don't need a dictionary to tell you it's meaning. ;)

Bacchulum, you're fairly late to this party - it's been around the world for a while now :)  I've been wondering about this since I was a child and learned about million/milliard/billion.

The other thing pricks me regularly is the "milli meter" - i.e. one-thousands of a meter, huh?    But million isn't a thousand, it's a thousand times thousand.

In light of this, and reviewing the short scale, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_large_numbers) the only problem is with the thousand IMO.  That just should not be there.
The long scale - used in Hungary, too - is just fucked up with the milliard added in, (and the other stuff).

I say each power of 10 needs a unique name. After 'thousand' we seem to lose the plot. 10,000 (next topic, the decimal separator) already has a name, that is 'crore'.
Just need to make up a few more but, NOT basing them on Latin or Greek or as derivations of some lower number.

I wouldn't say I'm late, this is just the first time you've heard me rant about this.
I settled on this point of view in the 70's, just after I discovered why bicycles and tricycles are named what they are. ;)

Cool, so how do you like my solution?

Million=10^3 = 1,000  (like milli is 0.001)
Billion=10^6 = 1,000,000
Trillion=10^9
etc...just add three zeroes.
Therefore decillion should have 10*3 zeroes.   Easy-peasy.

If we agree, we can start spreading this correct way about numbering!

It could work. ;)
The main reason the short scale is popular is because accountants and politicians get to say a cool word like billion.
Image how "cool" they'll be (in their own heads) when they can say quadrillion all the time? 8) ;D
And as an added bonus, they could brag about how many people became millionaires under their 'economic governance'. ;)
