The RSR rank now includes the Jap Pack cars. Here are the stats I've gleaned from the top 5% of rank times across a variety of tracks:

Mazda RX-7 Spirit R,               0.36,     151
Nissan 370z Nismo,                 1.25,     245
Mazda MX5 Cup,                     0.03,     785

BMW Z4 E89 Drift,                  1.57,     4
Lotus Elise SC Step2,              1.73,     11
BMW Z4 E89 Step1,                  0.37,     17
Toyota Supra MKIV,                 0.23,     224
Nissan Skyline GTR R34 V-Spec,     0.46,     196

The first number is the gap to the previous car; the second number is the number of laps that have been looked at - a lot of laps already.

It looks like the Mazda MX5 Cup might be worth throwing into the mix.

3 x 10 lap sprints, with 10 mins qualifying, at Modena (fast layout) [DOWNLOAD] - not the OSRW one, just the basic mod track.

Cars
Nissan GT-R R34 Skyline V-Spec
Mazda RX-7 Spirit R
Toyota Supra MK IV
Nissan 370Z NISMO
Mazda MX5 Cup

REQUIRES YOU TO BUY THE JAPANESE PACK DLC.

Typical weather at Modena right now is hot - about 30 degrees and sunny.

Vote for as many season 12 options as you'd like to compete in.

Ferrari 312T vs Lotus 72D
2 x 25 min races with 1 compulsory pitstop each (enforced by a fuel multiplier). Open tyre choice (1x).
Qualifying before each race.
Choose a car for the season, with an optional mid-season car swap that costs 6 championship points.

Close in performance, both cars have strengths and weaknesses that might come into play at different tracks.

Multiclass: Merc C9/Mazda 787B and Merc 190E/BMW M3 Gr.A
Class A: Mercedes-Benz C9 1989 LM and Mazda 787B
Class B:Mercedes-Benz 190E EVO II and BMW M3 E30 Gr. A 92

Separate points and leaderboard for both classes.

A qualifying session (followed by a non-points "fun" race) in the first week in the Merc C9 will put the fastest guys into Class A and the slower guys into Class B. Within each class, you can choose either car, with an optional mid-season car swap that costs 6 championship points.

50 minute race with 2 compulsory pit stops  (enforced by a fuel multiplier). Open tyre choice (1x).

Having two classes of greatly different speed will be interesting. Multiclass racing allows for two champions.

Ford GT40
1 x 15 min sprint, with qualifying. Race 2, 30 mins, full reverse grid from race 1 finish position with 1 compulsory pit stop.

The Ford GT40 is a different kind of car to those we have raced before. Sounds great, and is challenging. Reverse grid race with a CPS should lead to interesting strategy choices.

Japanese Pack: Skyline/RX7 Spirit/Supra MKIV/Nissan 370z/Mazda MX5
Cars from the Japanese Pack DLC.

Nissan GT-R R34 Skyline V-Spec
Mazda RX-7 Spirit R
Toyota Supra MK IV
Nissan 370Z NISMO
Mazda MX5 Cup

3 x full reverse grid sprints (like season 11).
Choose a car for the season, with an optional mid-season car swap that costs 6 championship points.

These cars are much livelier than the Toyota GT86, and are all fairly close in performance yet different in handling. Should give great pack racing, like season 11.

The 1.6 release notes say ”Engine performance is now dependent on air density/temperature”. It will be interesting to see the effect of hotter/colder weather on Tuesday nights.

As this thread explains http://www.assettocorsa.net/forum/index.php?threads/engine-performance-is-now-dependent-on-air-density-temperatureny.32917/
Colder temperatures give better engine performance.

I've had a very quick go at most of the cars. I took them around Silverstone for a few laps.

I class them thusly, by comparable lap times:

Class C (about 2:38)
Mazda MX5 Cup
Toyota AE86 Tuned

Class B (about 2:35)
Nissan Skyline R34
Mazda RX7 Spirit R - great drifter!
Toyota Supra MK IV

Class A
Mazda RX7 Tuned (2:28)
Supra MK IV Time Attack (2:22)

The Class A cars are quite beastly and fun.

The Class C cars are sort of Toyota GT86-ish, underpowered and predictable.

The Class B cars make a good group of comparable cars which could be the 4th candidate for Season 12. Or for something a little faster and wilder, we could go the Supra MK IV Time Attack, which is still pretty easy to drive.

In the spirit of trying some of the cars that will feature in the upcoming season 12 poll, this Tuesday we will try the Ferrari 312T and the Lotus 72D at Silverstone. I'll wait a bit until we do the Jap Pack, so people have a little more chance to buy the pack.

2 x 10 lap races, with a 15 min qually prior to both races. The idea is for you to do a race in each car, for comparison.

Realistic weather for Silverstone at this time of year is about 18 degrees.

The question has come up before: what's more important, tyre pressure or tyre temps? So I did some experimenting in the Toyota the other day, with the usual semislicks.

First, I got the tyre pressures to optimal pressures for the conditions, and put in some times. The tyres were too cold, below optimal grip. So, reading the tooltip hints in AC that said lowering pressures may increase temps, I lowered the pressures by 5 PSI. That made the tyres a little bit hotter (about 5 degrees or so), and closer to their optimal temp range, but I was quite a bit slower. The timing delta showed me that I was losing straight-line speed. This would be due to the lower pressured tyres having more rolling resistance, which made my top speed suffer.

So then I went the other way, and over-inflated the tyres by 5 PSI. That made me faster in the straights, where rolling resistance was reduced, but slower in the corners, where grip was reduced. Overall, the lap times were about the same as with optimal pressures.

So the takeaway for me is that it might be beneficial to increase the pressures just a little from the optimal pressures, to gain you a little more straight-line speed to earn some more passing opportunities, without sacrificing any overall lap time.

3 x 13 laps for the final round of the season, at Vallelunga Classic (OSRW version).

Can Marty, with a 9 point lead, hold off Matthew to take the championship?

Long range weather forecast is again about 16 degrees, maybe a slight chance of drizzle.

Australian Assetto Corsa League, Tuesday nights / Season 12 Chat

With 2 rounds of Season 11 to go, I want to throw some pre-poll suggestions up for season 12.

The last 3 seasons we've had are, in reverse:
  • Toyota GT86 (street car)
  • GT3
  • Formula Renault (open wheeler)
We also have the AC "Jap Pack" coming May 18, but we probably need a change from cars like the Toyota 86.

To keep mixing it up, I'm thinking of the following options:

1) Mazda 787B and Merc C9 (Group C) vs. Mercedes-Benz 190E EVO II and BMW M3 E30 DTM (Group A).
Two classes from the 90's, in 1 hour races with probably a couple of pit stops. Qualifying session the first week in the Group C cars to determine who drives in which class. Within your class, you can choose either car.

2) Ford GT40 with equalising ballast to compress the field just a little.

3) Ferrari 312T/(Lotus 72D?) - It seems the Lotus 72D is slower than the Ferrari. Could be a "leading half of the field gets the slower Lotus" deal.

4) Something from the Jap Pack.

823
3 x 11 laps, on the Sprint (GT) layout.

Weather Forecast
(Long range forecast is similar conditions to Modena - 16 degrees and damp track).

Just some opening lap incidents first:

Race 1, Freezer hit Bird, but Freezer was the meat in a 3-car wide sandwich and didn't really have anywhere to go.

...and gee Race 3 was good.

Assetto Corsa / Killed my brake pot?
« on: May 01, 2016, 12:16:17 PM »
So I just cleaned my brake pot with electrical contact cleaner and lube spray from Jaycar, and now the pot doesn't work at all. No signal comes from it. What the hell? I was very gentle with it - no broken wires or anything like that.
