Here's some of the contact information I have pulled out of the server logs for Nurburgring race 2. Note how high some of the reported speeds are! No wonder there's billiard ball collisions.

I hope to be able to "clump" these contacts together, because a lot of these are all the after affects of the one turn 1 incident.

Racing general / Clipsal

I'm listening to the GT3s gun it at the exit of turn 7. It's making the hairs on the back of my neck prickle.

One compulsory pit stop. No pit window. Tyre change permitted but no refuelling.

Normal standing start.

For this round, we're going to try a rolling start, as per the incidents thread.

Rolling start. Full opening lap, as close to 120 kph as possible, leader calls "Go!" on teamspeak somewhere between the white line across the track near the back of the start boxes, and the start line. No overtaking (no overlapping) before the start line i.e. stay behind the rear bumper of the car in front of you.

Redress. If you're in a first lap accident with a pack behind you, you must clear the track safely and not rejoin until all fast-moving cars have passed and you can do so safely.

Special Spa Rule. Single file through Eau Rouge at all times! The car on the left approaching Eau Rouge has right of way; an overlapping car on the right has to drop back. If you think you are going to end up being two abreast in Eau Rouge, the car on the right has to drop back.

After reading the discussion in this thread, I want to summarise here and make some suggestions for the way forward.

Damage
Gratulin asked if damage can be reduced. It's already only 60%. I don't want to reduce damage, agreeing with Marty that some degree of damage makes you more careful. There's more at stake. Damage is part of racing. I don't think that many people actually suffer significant damage in these opening lap incidents. The degree of damage is acceptable - there's some damage to give consequences to accidents, but not that much that your windscreen shatters if someone farts.

Measuring incidents
Too much work. You can't automate it without making mistakes and penalising some people unfairly. Some incidents are part of normal racing. I can technically only see contacts in the server logs after the race. It would be possible to give say a time penalty for contacts, but you'd have to automate who's at fault, the significance of the contact etc. Too hard, in my book.

Starting from the back of the grid as a penalty
I can't automate this - i.e. I can only fix the position of everybody, or nobody. It would have to be an honour system where someone doesn't qualify. It wouldn't make much sense in reverse grid races, where say if Guybrush is starting last anyway, he effectively gets no penalty.

Attitude (a bit of an aside)
A race is not over if you have an accident on lap 1. I prefer to see people getting on with it, putting their head down and making up ground, whether it's through speed or strategy. I am always trying to simulate some of the emotions of real racing - ups and downs, highs and lows, mental strength etc.

Redress (or safe track re-entry)
I like Gratulin's suggestion: If you are in an opening lap pile up - clear the track and don't move until every moving, non-impacted car is safely past you. In other words, don't be too hasty to get going again if that means you are just going to hit someone else in your desperation.

Start procedure
I like the idea of a rolling start, a full rolling lap as Chris suggested. There is an argument that it disadvantages those at the back of the pack, being left further behind, but that's got to be better than being involved in a pileup. Keep the speed up - not 80 kph, but no more than 120 kph, say. Practice starts aren't necessary - many of us have had over 100 Tuesday night races now. That should be plenty of practice!

So.............. where to?
Putting it altogether, this is what we'll try:

Rolling start. Full opening lap, as close to 120 kph as possible, leader calls "Go!" on teamspeak somewhere between the last start box and the start line. No overtaking before the start line.

Redress. If you're in a first lap accident with a pack behind you, you must clear the track and not rejoin until all fast-moving cars have passed.

Penalties. If you cause 2 first lap incidents or failures to adequately safely rejoin the track, then you get some significant penalty ballast just for the next race.

Video review. If people want to discuss incidents looking at videos for education, then I'm all for it. We could have a sub-forum. But I wouldn't base any penalties on this.

2 x 13 laps. 1 CPS, no refuelling.

Weather is 11 Clear. 12 Clear.

Practice server is up.

For this round, we're going to try a rolling start, as per the incidents thread.

Rolling start. Full opening lap, as close to 120 kph as possible, leader calls "Go!" on teamspeak somewhere between the white line across the track near the back of the start boxes, and the start line. Racing general / F1 proposes new qualifying format
« on: February 25, 2016, 08:00:07 AM »
http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/feb/24/formula-one-rules-shake-up-qualifying-fia

The new qualifying format, set to be introduced at the season opener in Australia on 20 March, will see the slowest drivers eliminated every 90 seconds after a timed period – rather than at the end of the three sessions – in hope of providing greater unpredictability.

Race 1 was just a bit unfortunate in T1, I think. Everyone was bunched up, everyone was really slow, if not stopped, but it just took the tiniest of hits to set of a bit of a bumper-to-bumper chain reaction. AC's exaggerated collision physics didn't help here. I don't think any penalties are warranted here.

Penalty to Grat (-8) for running into the back of Guybrush (+8), which then pushed Guybrush into the path of Phil.

On lap 2, after there was a big pile up at the last fast chicane, Jeremy was a bit careless with track re-entry. He had just been bashed around a bit and was nearly stopped on the side of the track, but rather than be aware of oncoming fast traffic, he deviated back into the racing line to get going again and hit me, sending me back to last. That was careless.

In race 2, Jeremy (-8 pts) didn't keep to his line on T1, moving across to the left, and hit Rolz (+8pts)

This round we are back to the 2 x 30 min races with a CPS in each race (like the first 3 rounds).
1.5 x fuel and 2 x tyres.

2 x 17 laps.

Weather: 17 Mid Clear. 19 Light Clouds.

If you want to swap to another car for the remainder of the season, post it here. Also if you have any dietary skin requirements.

The swap is optional. If you're happy with the car you've got, keep it.

Phil.8 didn't do his second pit stop before the end of lap 23 (pitted on the end of lap 24). Now in the black and white letter of the rules, I said this would be a DQ, but I'm sure Phil wouldn't be too happy about that, so I gave him the finish points for one lower position (-10 pts).

Ysu is now Bird on-track.

And yes... I'll sort the pit boxes by season standings, so Bird isn't automatically near the end of pit lane 8)

This is the first of the two longer rounds.

The format is a single race of 34 laps (about 1 hr), after a qualifying session. 2.5x fuel, and 3x tyres.

There are TWO compulsory pit stops, where you can refuel, change tyres or repair. The pit window for the two CPS is laps 6 and 23. You can pit outside the pit window if you need to make repairs, or splash 'n dash, but you must do two pit stops in the pit window. DQ if you don't.

Earliest you can enter pit lane is at the end of lap 6. The latest you can pit is the end of lap 23.

The scoring is a little different in these format rounds: additional points (50 down to 1) are awarded for your position at the end of lap 14. So bear that in mind when you pit.

Weather: 34 and Clear. Hot!
