Lol I liked the rift on kickstarter and it was all good, then they completely abandoned all that and sold out to facebook. I was going to get the DK1 but res just was too low even DK2 was a bit less then I hoped but figured id help fund them by purchasing one to play with I preordered a DK2 which included about $250 shipping handling and taxes on a $300 product because I wanted to support the project. Then days after they started taking preorders for the DK2 they announced the FB deal out of the blue. I hate FB with a passion and would never have made the preorder had I known this even though both announcements came in the same week they decided to keep this quite when announcing the DK2 pre order. Anyway as soon as the FB deal was confirmed I emailed them and cancelled my order which at least they did refund in full as they knew what they did was a pretty low and dodgy act.

I would rather pay double the price of whatever a FB rift is if they werent involved, but I wouldnt take one for free now. The rift still looks like an attractive product and I only see it as a one hit wonder, I hope they get it out and its a success then everyone else will see there is a market and plenty of competing products and better ones will come about. Once there are enough I cant see FB maintaining brand loyalty from customers with large numbers going for a better alternative, but I couldnt care less as I will get something later on as my triple setup is fine for now still.

Am I going to go on kickstarter and support another startup that quite likely will end up in exactly the same way? maybe Apple wants one next. Do they have a sellout to evil corporation kickstarter funding option.  ;D

now that is looking interesting...
We had a "Zombie Attack" day with the Oculus Rift acouple of days ago. It was mad! I got down too late to book a spot, it went non-stop 9-5, but is was a hoot watching the 'operators' and viewing their view on the monitors...

Many forgot they were in virtual world when the eventually become over run by zombies!

I'd love to try these out for a few hours before buying.
Mainly to see if I get vertigo. I'm sure I would. lol. and the weight. 400gms!!!!! aprox!!! So i'm pretty sure they are being conservative with 400gms. That's pretty close to 1/2 a kilo. yes, i'm pretty clever at working that out.
That's a lot of weight on your neck for a hour(s) at a time. go and tape a 400gm book to the front of your face for an hour or two. See if get headaches or neck strain...

Speaking of necks, got a viagra stuck in my throat the other night.. Had a stiff neck for hours..

Looks interesting... I tried to throw them a few bucks, but they don't have PayPal option for donations... just not a fan of too many locations having my CC details.

Yeah, wrt the 'vertigo', since you had problems earlier, I'd say it's a safe bet that you get - not vertigo, but motion sickness. (vertigo is a tad different thing).   Although, who knows.  I've used 3D glasses for driving, before, and never had a problem.  Even combined with head tracking.

I've only ever got problems with very specific games that have a rather small fov and something weird in their gfx engine, that I can't put my finger on.  But mostly it is the stupid 55 degree horizontal fov, inherent in console games.  This is w/o 3D or head tracking, mind you.

As for the weight; lost of headphones weight around 300g and even over. 400g isn't too bad if it's properly secured.  But you don't want both on...and that's another consideration!

I've just got a DK2 and while they are amazing they do give me a 'strange' feeling. Something akin to motion sickness but very slight. Just a bit uncomfortable. They are ok to wear weight wise. However, the clarity and resolution is not yet good enough. Also, one thing that I did not expect was that they are difficult to get a clear, focussed view. Ultimately, you will need prescription lenses in them to be really effective I think.

The one thing that is amazing is the actual driving experience. It is way easier to drive the car since there is no sensation of lag or delay. I drive with the steering wheel and driver arms visible in the Rift and I end up believing that I have driving gloves on. Your lose the disconnection between your G27 wheel and the virtual wheel. They become one and the same.

Even when AC gets Rift support back I will not use it full-time. Just occasionally, maybe in a race every now and again. Triple screen will still be my preference for a long while yet.

That is so awesome to hear, I can't wait for the final product. Any idea when they finish it?

That's never a problem; just turn the on-screen wheel off.  It makes little sense, anyway, when you have the real one on the desk... ;)

Bird, what I was saying was that when you are "in the Rift world" you cannot see the physical or real world and therefore you must have the "on screen" or virtual wheel turned on. Also, you need to turn on the "on screen driver" to see "your" arms. It is weird at first but in the VR world you look down at your virtual body and the virtual wheel and arms become your "real arms". By losing the disconnect between G27 and the onscreen wheel I mean that you end up only being aware of the onscreen wheel since it is the only one you can see. It is in 3D and your brain begins to move that wheel directly. The hands you see on the wheel become your own and you begin to simply drive the ingame car in the virtual world as if it were real.

I reckon it is more than a year away (my guess only!). They just showed a prototype of a new version that may not be released as a DK version. That could be the beginning of the formal development path for the consumer Rift.
