This article shows that you do NOT need a high end CPU to get a good FPS at 4K res, perfect for VR applications :)

https://www.tomshardware.com/uk/features/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-ampere-cpu-scaling-benchmarks

The gap between current AMD and Intel CPUs at 4K is basically nonexistent. In fact, minor differences in board design, firmware, or just 1% variability in benchmark runs all become factors. The 9900K, for example, now comes out 'ahead' of the 10900K at 4K medium, and the gap is even larger at 4K ultra. That shouldn't happen, except it frequently does when you're looking at different motherboards - even with the exact same memory. Maybe the differences in SSD play a role as well.

The point isn't that the 9900K is the fastest CPU at 4K ultra by 1%. The real point is that the difference between the fastest and slowest CPU we tested is only 8% — and if we drop the 4770K, the gap shrinks to just 3.5%.

Pre-orders from PLE have evga cards at a reasonable price (compared to the rest) 6 weeks lead though. I'm just going to wait and hope prices don't jack

Just wait.  We've waited years for such a card, we can wait a bit more, no?

Has there been any meaningful results from sim racing titles?  I've seen some anecdotal comments about ACC in 4k but nothing else.

Early reports suggest real world bumps are perhaps not as earth shattering as the "spin" may have indicated (not a surprise). Certainly the cards are more "efficient" and offer a decent performance delta however these two measures are not interchangeable as some outlets had interpreted.

The gain % seems to be the greatest at 4k resolutions  much higher % increase then when playing at 1080p even the 1440p seems to get better gains than 1080p

So I am presuming they will help triple screen gaming quite a bit as well as VR .

Perhaps I am having a grumpy day but I am not convinced the 30 series is actually the messiah. A proper stoning may be in order  :P

The massive performance gains leaked are actually related to thermal and power and are not linear with rendering performance. In some scenarios there are impressive performance improvements but in others they are pretty small in scale (e.g. 130fps - 145fps - your not going to notice). I have noted the limited "low" res performance uplift. Might be a case of the cards trying to keep up with the increasing screen density we are expecting these days but I was not really looking to upgrade all my screens to justify the graphics card upgrade.

I think the real benefit will be from fully utilising the capability the "RTX" brings which I don't think is being optimised in the sim racing world. Now might be a perfect time for the West brothers to reappear.

Don't get me wrong, I am still on the pre-order list and will get one to replace the trusty 1080ti.

Which one did you pre-order?

AORUS Master.  I put a massive amount of thought into it.... basically the last 2 motherboards and GPUs have been Gigabyte / AORUS and I've been happy with them so....

I know EVGA are cheaper and seem to be the pick of the bunch for price vs. performance however the list of people trying to get them is extreme.

Have you got one yet?

I wish, nvidia pulling a scarcity stunt coupled with the wfh demand increases for everything tech/sim/coffee related, be lucky to get one this year. I did pre-order the cheapest evga as it's what I reckon already more than what a gpu should cost, however I'm contemplating cancelling since my 1080ti still does the job ok. Although CP2077 might be a different story and cranking ACC to max would be pretty cool.

I'm not convinced yet either , Dan Suzuki  did a you tube clip on them running with triples to test them out and the gains were highly disappointing .The games  he tested seemed to be more cpu limited than GPU limited so the 30 series gains were pretty much non existent over the 2080ti in ACC .  I'll try find the clip and link it here.

Lets hope the new AMD cards are more gaming focused and lead to better results , crosses fingers.

Hmm, I'm running a plain 2080 on 1k triples and ACC looks great...can't complain about performance issues.
