Title: Skin download for next round.
Post by: Wally on September 29, 2014, 08:21:46 PM
Dick's skin pack: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5wnd7ypltpcybw7/Season3%20Skinpack%20001.zip?dl=0 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/5wnd7ypltpcybw7/Season3%20Skinpack%20001.zip?dl=0)

Extract the individual skin folders under the appropriate car's skins folder.

Thank you Dick.

As in the signup thread, these are speed-based colours. Slower cars are green, faster cars are red. I've assigned these skins to everyone on the grid, so download the skin pack if you don't want to see default skins!

Thank you, your Dickness!  ;)

Actually...where/how to unpack these?  The directory names don't seem to match the ones in ac/content/cars/

no worries Bird!! Yeah unfortunately you'll have to unpack them onto your desktop or something. then manually put them in the right folders. I think I have named them all as car.
Or is it unpacking as one big mess?

Nope. Works for me. Pretty easy to just drag to correct car skin folder.

Post by: Bird on September 30, 2014, 01:58:33 PM
It is a bit of a mess, cause it seems you'll create this sort of folder structure; (example)
/content/cars/bmw_1m/skins/Bmw_1m/  ... skin files here

(i.e. bmw 1m skin in the bmw 1m folder... oops)

If you guys agree, we can re-pack it so that you can unpack the whole thing in your ac folder.
I'd create folder structures like this:
/content/cars/bmw_1m/skins/XGNs3/ ... skin files here

I can do it, but I reckon it changes the skin's "name", correct?  And that puts some extra work on Wally...

Ahh see.
I knew there was some way of doing that. I just didn't know how. But that would be ideal Bird.
I'm not home atm so I can't change the download till later. It's up to Mr Wally anyhow I'd say.

I think keeping the skins named as they are isnt really a problem, it just makes it easier for wally and quite likely nobody else would use the same naming structure for a skin. At least the way it is you can tell which is which except for the one not named properly. The bmw z4 should be for the z4 s1 otherwise you wont see guybrush in his kitty machine.

I would be easier if packaged in the proper folder structure even though its not so hard to do as is atm. I can imagine a few guys would want a simpler method but there will be some that likely will mess it up either way.

It isn't very user friendly atm.
Ideally the game should show whatever skins the server host wants to use and we all see them regardless. Or even better, you log into a server with your skin of choice and everyone else can see it. I think that would be a technological miracle to do that though.

As it is there is a lot of file digging to install skins, tracks, cars etc. Would like to see a flashy UI down the track.

I think skin sharing is something that should be addressed, a simple way is to have each person add their skins to the game. Then these be uploaded to an official server somewhere and when joining a server users get the option to dl all skins automaticaly they dont have that are in the server. Best not to force the server to host these files but a seperate host that all servers will be able to access and get skons from.

This way if you make a skin and race on any server all people will be able to see it, now its only usefull in a league setup. Main reason I havent bothered much with skinning is because in the end onoy you see the skin most of the time and everyone else just sees a white car.

How it is right now is how I've set the entry list up. I. E with skin name matching not quite matching the car like in dick's original download.

Ok , let's try to use it as it is.  I'm wondering how many ppl will be able to figure it out correctly.

Im sure most should be good after all Dick came up with the idea so it must be the most logical way of doing something.  ;D

Just make sure everyone puts the z4 into the z4 s1 as Dick screwed the naming up on that skin even using his own method.

I had to mess up something. I probably have it in the wrong folder myself.  :D
and I'll blame Wally for having vague car lists in the 1st place lol.

And Wally, Will we be using the other cars? I've only done the 8 skins.. or is it 9? Whatever, I think there was 13 cars in the original sign up thread list. Are these other cars going to be left out?

Any of those cars could get used in the coming weeks.

When I race these types of cars on my server I normally just use the default skins, but us different groups of them to differentiate the types.

There are quite a few skins by default and all the street cars have a few shades of the same colour. Its easy enough to use 3 shades of green for say the elise sc, shades of blue for step one and shades of red for s3. This way you end up with more variety amongst the skins and with the other cars I tend to use solid colours for basic cars then racing stripes or racing skins for the faster versions.

This way will work but quite likely it will have lots of the same colours and anyone not using the skin pack will see a field of white cars. I dont know how wally does the entry list but skin selection wise I find the acserverlauncher GUI tool quite handy and you can add GUID'd to drivers there fairly easily along with picking skins from the list.

If you had a list of all guid's to each player already in your entry list then it would be probably quite easy to change cars or skins this way.

no probs.

Might wan't to put some instructions in with your 1st post Wally. Cause they need to be manually put into the correct folders. where the normal  way would be to unzip into the 'cars'folder. Marty's fault it's like that.

I second that. Even if I didn't see many different cars during the races. In qual they were there.

Ok here are the skins all next to each other. slowest at the top to fastest at the bottom.
There are still 2-3 cars not on here. (faster cars) So the faster end looks out of whack.

Shut up about the M3 e92 s1 skin. Just shut up. I can't even look at it any more... But nice colour.

Before I make a zip. I thought I'd show them for discussion. But there is nothing I'm going to change. so stiff. lol

Thanks dick the purple one looks interesting, it has a bit more Dick flare in it. Shame we wont see the Kitty machine make an appearance and I am surpised dick has yet to drive a car with Rainbows, Ponies, kitties etc. He seems to like giving those skins for others but wouldn't dare drive one himself  ;)

Forgot all about putting them in a .zip didn't I. Watch some TV i said... Do it later I said..
Woke up on the couch about midnight.

I'll do it when I get home tonight. I hope that wont be too late Wally?
Maybe just name the skin files of these two new additions how you like Wally. And I'll rename them at my end. if that is easy and makes any sense..

and that interesting purple skin.. It's a total mess. If you look closely, those squares are actually copies of what the skin is meant to look like. But they are tiny, and are like wallpaper... shut up.

This is a great idea, however, according to my folder structure there should be a subfolder for every skin, so I'll pass on this until it's properly sorted. If not then no big deal.

ok i'm stumped. cant get the zip to unpack automatically into the cars file. I'm blaming Bird. not the fact I too stupid.

only the two cars anyway. You'll have to manually drill through your AC folders to put them in the right skin folder. Stressful, I understand.

Until Bird yells at me in some foreign language (English) how to get it right.

We should figure out what was wrong with the white car yesterday.

And now, For His Dickness!
here's how to make it into one nice zip that you need to unpack in the ac folder:

First you need to replicate the directory structure of the original skins.
I've recreated the structure, it's all empty directories.  At the very end, there are all the skin files, where they should be.
I've done this all in a temp directory as you can see (this is recommended to avoid messing up something else - just copy stuff in here)
Make sure there are no files in any other upper level directory, as you might eff up someone's AC installation if you do that.
Here's how it looks:

Next; navigate above the "content" directory (in this case navigate into the temp dir) and right-click the "content" directory as you can see, and hit "add to archive".

The result is a file like this (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/24242159/skin_test.zip), that you can just put into your /steamapps/common/AssettoCorsa/ directory, unpack, and everything will be in its rightful place.

p.s. it'd be good to use a skin naming that makes sense - eg "xgnSeason2" would be a great skin name for all these skins - it's easy to set-up for Wally, and it's easy to identify later. :)

Of course for other cars, you need to make the appropriate directory structure within "cars": i.e.: carName/skins/skinName/...files here....

I hope it's clear enough.

ok I've finished this project.
I gotta say it was harder than I thought it was going to be lol. For all the wrong reasons. The lotus have too many panels to mess with. When there is 4-5 variants it was too much work to do anything fancy. so i'm not very proud of these skins at all. I prefer quality to quantity.

But it was a cool idea. Was harder to make the colours flow than I thought it would. Kinda got away with though. it's easy to look at a whole pallet of shaded swatches. you can see the difference. But looking at cars one or two shades lighter / darker it's a lot harder to tell them apart.

I guess I should make a stand alone post. and I will. Just someone check my .zip
This has the last 3 variants.

It should be v3, methinks, not `1  :)
