Bacchulum's PC Fixed ?

Run " Windows Experience"          Control Panel/System and Security/System-  check the Windows Experience. I think your CPU will show up as being slow. This will test all your hardware and should give us a pointer to where the problem is.

    Could be close.
But the SSD is slow, the HDD is slow, and there was the CPU overheating issue.
All 3 failing simultaneously, or the bit they're all connected to?

Are you running both SSD and a traditional HDD together?

A connected failing drive can cause a slow boot even if it's not the boot drive. If possible, try booting SSD-only with the HDD not connected?

Something like CrystalDiskInfo can be used to view disk drive information to see reported errors.

UPDATE

Received the HDD sent by Roo so proceeded to pull the PC out of it's nook (or is that cranny?)
Unplugged  my 'dead' HDD, couldn't get it out, so just put roo's in the next slot, plugged in and booted up.
Got confused when I found all my data, to realize I'd plugged in the wrong HDD, but it seemed to be working now.
Still don't trust it, so in the process of transferring necessary data to the new drive.

In that process, during a reboot, windows ran some DOS program that deleted some (a shit load) of duplicate files and repaired a whole heap of others.
Boot time is back to SSD standards.

Some weird shit been happening, so I'm not counting my chicanes yet, but that's where we are now. 8)

....and another question:

can windows be installed on a drive with data already on it, or does it need to be blank?
In case the SSD is dying.
(should've asked this before starting to copy data)

That sounds promising Dave. Hopefully you have found the problem and well on the way back to the race track.

"county chicanes"... :D

I'm pretty sure Windows will only install on a blank drive (it will at least wipe the drive). Others can confirm for sure.

You need to isolate the problem, try running for a while with your old HDD disconnected and see if you have no more funny stuff. I  think SSD failure is rare, anyone here have one fail?

MTBF — MTBF (mean time between failures) is a measure of how reliable a hardware product or component is over its expected lifetime. For most components, the measure is typically in thousands or even tens of thousands of hours between failures. For example, a hard disk drive may have a mean time between failures of 300,000 hours, while an SSD might have 1.5 million hours.
