Hardware & Reviews / Gaming surround sound

I've only got a temporary setup. So wires across the floor. Remember that wireless speakers aren't actually wireless unless they are battery powered! You may have a powerpoint on the rear wall however. But you will still need wires up to the speakers.

I'm considering putting the rear speakers on a couple of stands that I simply move into place when I am driving. If I use multi-core speaker cable then there is just a single run to one of the speakers and then a daisy chain across to the second rear speaker.

Personally I like a bit of bass, and for such a cheap price it's hard to go wrong, but if you have a second set of speakers lying around, that is cheaper again  ;D
Agreed. Interestingly, I wasn't at all convinced I needed surround sound until I decided to try out the rear surround speakers with the old ones I found laying about. Now I want to upgrade to a "proper" 5.1 system. I just didn't realise the extra information you would get from surround sound. Obvious in hindsight!

Thanks guys. Don't you reckon one dedicated 5.1 system like the Logitechs would work better than two stereo speakers? I tried plugging in two stereo sets, but the sound wasn't very balanced. There wasn't very much sound from the rear. Maybe that's just AC at this stage of development.
Did you set the audio to quadrophonic? Also, use the Realtek control panel to balance the sound (you can play the test beeps in each speaker to test) and then refine the rear balance using the speaker volume control on the actual speaker. I definitely get rear sound as loud as I want ie it can be set very loud and I then lower it for the balance I want.

You don't need 5.1. Quadrophonic is just as good for sim racing.

The cheapest way is to just add a second pair of PC speakers and configure them as rear surround speakers. If you have an old set of speakers laying around then the cost is zero. Your sound card will need a 3.5mm audio out for the surround speakers. Set your PC audio to quadrophonic and both sets of speakers to full size and AC will give you glorious surround tire squeals and cars coming up behind you!

I am doing this with just onboard audio.

Add me in please. Will miss the first round but good after that.

Bad news Dick. Hope it is just a temporary thing. Maybe the latest update changed the graphics refresh? Or perhaps those skins you have produced are too psychedelic? A friend of mine became allergic to red wine a while ago. Not sure which would be worse - allergy to red wine or allergy to sim racing  :o ::)

Just put a setup in my dropbox if anyone wants to try.

It's good for a 1.00.6 so far.

Cheers.
I'm disappointed GB! Thought you would have broken 1.00 by now ;)

This race is still on right?
I swear this car feels 'nicer' after the update.

Yessir. I imagine the rear end feels a bit nicer, huh?
Dunno about the nicer feeling  :P - but I did find that judging the power out of the corners is easier and since a slide is now more controllable (for me anyway - there isn't that big snap back) I am now getting the hang of this combo. I am also braking deeper into the corner to help the front-end turn in. I assume you guys were already doing that? And thanks Bird for the gentle on the throttle advice - that really helps.

I shudder to think what GB, Marty etal will do around here  :-\ ;D

Now, Bacchulum, I'd love to see an update of your time on the Friends Leaderboard  8)

Anyone else tried the Cobra after the latest AC update? It seems like a vast improvement in stability to me. The fundamental handling instability may have been fixed by the updated physics/FFB in this release. Do others find it also improved?

Yes. It is driver issue not pedal issue! I am still very much learning throttle control. Every now and again I get a sense of the rhythm of squeezing the throttle as you come out of the apex of a corner. Mostly I am just jamming it down and the car can handle it. With this car it is much more sensitive - I am either too little or too much; or too early or too late.

Thanks. Feels the same. I usually can tell the difference between the different setups but not with this car/track combo. Something wrong with the way I driving. I think my "understeery" driving style has caught up with me! The frontend just pushes wide and when I get on the throttle The back steps out. I am spending most of the lap "coasting" waiting to be able to get back on the throttle.

I'm not a big fan of these hill climb tracks to be honest.  Takes too long for me to learn them!
That's a GenY problem I think - short attention span :) Baby Boomers take too long to learn even the short tracks :( :(

I've managed to get into the 1:03s but am struggling to get lower. I see Wally in the 1:02s and Bacchulum in the low 1:03s. I am losing time getting onto the power out of the corners and the track feels pretty slippery. Do I play with the Power and Coast settings to help with the power out of corners?

Don't want to over complicate this but how do other drivers know what car a skin will be for? I realise we can look up the week's list of cars, then work out which folder to copy a particular driver's skin into, then go look for the specific skin for that driver and car combo for the week. Just saying it might get a tad messy?

Bruce, I am away for the next 3 races. Pretty much kills me for the season. I'd still like to do the final race(s) when I get back however. Thx
