FUN RUN THURSDAY MARCH 19: BMW M235i Racing at Jerez 1988
« on: March 14, 2015, 09:15:38 PM »
Next Thursday will be a Fun Run while we wait for the Cobra Cup Season 4 to commence on April 2. I will post Season 4 details and sign-up thread in the next couple of days.

The car we will run is the BMW M235i Racing which is not the next 1M. It is a track-only version of the new M235i road car and is sold by BMW as an entry-level racing car. It drives fantastic - easy to drive, with slicks and powerful racing brakes etc.  The gearbox is an auto but BMW has engineered it so that the torque converter disengages immediately so the gear shifts feel like a DCT box. Should produce some really close racing.

Track: Jerez 1988 download (openBETA2)
Car: BMW M235i Racing
Practice: 7:30pm
Qualifying: 8:15pm
Race: 8:30pm 10 laps
Server: AUS XGN Thursday Fun Run

"So how did the latest factory BMW M235i Racing come into existence? Talking to BMW Motorsport Director, Jens Marquardt, he explained that during last year's VLN 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, he walked the grid with other senior management. After admiring their Z4 GT3-spec cars up front, they realized that further back BMW's representation was primarily from older E36 and E30 chassis. They simply didn't have any modern machinery for the grass roots racers."

Quite a fun car to drive.

Here's an interesting thread on the car bouncing at Nords, with Aris saying even in real life the suspension is too hard, with a backing link:

http://www.assettocorsa.net/forum/index.php?threads/bouncing-bmw-235-racing.21818/

Quote
Customers have reported that the car’s suspension setup is too harsh for the Nordschleife
BMW Responds:
“The car was set-up for its outing at the Nürburgring by BMW, in cooperation with our works drivers.
“This configuration was the basic set-up given to the teams.
“We will work closely with the teams to set the car up in such a way that the handling also meets the requirements of our privateers.”

Grobnik is too bumpy for it. I didn't experience this strange behaviour though.

At Jerez there is one right hander where you put the power down in 3rd and you can feel the car bounce under the power. That one feels good though :)

I didnt notice it bouncing much at Nords but then I try to stay off the kerbs there for the most part only use a few of them over the entire track on purpose. Its really quite a fun car and can produce some good racing, awesome around nords.

Here is the first lap of one race in these on my server, sorry volume is a bit low as I turn it down for TS and forgot to turn it back up for the video recording.

We'll run with usual XGN password for racing tonight.

Also, please download Hockenheimring 1988. We might do a second race on that track if there is enough interest.

[by Bird] downloads, again, are in this thread

The BMW M235 produced some good racing at Jerez last night. Seems the easy-to-drive nature of the Beemer put the focus on the racing. Cobra Cup Season 4 should produce some good battles in this car. Only challenge is that the fast guys get too fast too quickly in this car!

The random grid in the second race produced some mahem, which was excellent! Maybe we should make this a feature of the series, ie Race 2 will be run immediately after Race 1 with no qual session. What do you think?

Jerez also produced some good racing - al least after Bird learnt all the corners. They are a bit the same but the track is fast and flowing making it fun to drive and overtaking is possible. There were some good battles. We ran a test race on Hockenheim afterwards which seemed to be a bit tight for Thursday racing and seemed to have some issues. I'll change Round 4 to Jerez.

How do you pronounce Jerez?

It was great fun at Jerez. I wouldn't mind a mixed up grid. Shameless and I had some good battles.
