Title: Got a spare android phone or tablet?
Post by: buellersdayoff on October 10, 2017, 11:52:33 PM
If you've got a spare old android phone or tablet this works well. A lot of customisation by adding as much info and icons as you can fit on the screen. can be a bit fiddly to set up the way you like, but easy to connect to pc.
http://stryder-it.de/simdashboard/
pics https://photos.app.goo.gl/wm1BgLqyuj93dgEq1 my photos don't really do it justice, but I like the way the green lcd section flashes red when its time to change gear.
the app is free but very limited, full version is around $16 and unlocks everything and just about every racing sim on pc, or a couple of bucks to unlock it for just one sim/game. Probably other ways you can do this but I purchased it a long time ago and just recently remember I had it.

Thanks Bueller. I think a few of us use tablets like that.

I do have an old tablet that I could use but since moving to VR, most of this stuff is pointless as I can't see it.

I still use an app on my tablet for iracing though, I set it up pre race and all it does it automatically calculates how much fuel to put in during a pitstop. So I don't need to look at that one, just have faith in that it's not going to get it wrong.

Ive used dashmeterpro in the past which is similar and slimax have a good one that can also be a virtual button box.

Would like to try vr, looked at the cheaper pimax 4k, I just don't think my eye sight is adequate for the task

I'll have a look at those, I was considering building a button box https://youtu.be/Z7Sc4MJ8RPM

I grabbed this Simdashboard last night ($16us), setup a custom dashboard with everything I want (and there is a lot to pick from)
Enables me to remove the clutter off the screens and i find the info in the new dashboard easier to read . . . impressed!

Hmmm now you've got me looking up parts! I'm a noob at that kind of thing but would love to give it a go.

I found this video where the dude makes a smaller one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsSUUdw4bTY

His using one of these boards:

Looking a lot more simple as I'd have to watch the other one quite a few more times to understand that wiring!

It is pretty good, especially if you don't have anything already set up

Had a quick look at the local jaycar store and looks like everything you need is there, just not the cheapest way to do it. That mini box looks good

I had been looking on the jaycar website too as have one just up the road. What USB board did they have in there? Couldn't find any on the website but their search isn't great.

Couldn't see any online, but they had what looked like the pro micro arduino behind the counter

I priced up the larger button box. Using parts from Australia it would be $70+ but going on ebay, sorting by cheapest and getting the parts from China it could be done for $30. With the smaller 12 button ones I could make two for $40 as some of the parts can be shared across the two so thinking I may do that and have one either side on the steering wheel. Just going to design what I want in Photoshop  8)

Cool, I'll start looking around on eBay

I bought one of these 3.5" screens from ebay:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AU-3-5-HDMI-LCD-Display-480x320-Screen-Case-HDMI-Pen-Disc-for-Raspberry-Pi3-2B/182712193063?hash=item2a8a7ed027:g:wdkAAOSwkepZjP8K

I was thinking of putting it inside one of the button boxes I plan to make.

It came with a little acrylic case that sits nicely on top of my wheel base though. Think I may mount it there. I need a couple of adapters to tidy up the cables so they aren't coming out the top and side of the box, then I'll probably get some carbon look vinyl wrap to put over the acrylic and will prob look pretty nice!

I just installed Z1 dash and it worked out of the box. You can set up multiple dashboards then have a wheel or button box button go through them.

Looks sweet, I have Z1 but have not used in a bit, might fire it back up,  I did like the telemetry and Z1 Analyzer

So that little screen just plugs into hdmi ?   I like and think I will get one

Yep. HDMI port and Micro USB for power. I've just ordered a right angled Micro USB cable for better cable management and a M to F USB cable with a power switch so I can turn it on and off. Also ordered some carbon vinyl wrap to cover the box. Still unsure how I'm going to attach it to the base yet. I was thinking maybe something with the screw holes on the front of the fanatec base but maybe just some mounting tape will do the job.

Just say that the Simdashboard mentioned at the start of this post requires no connection.  It talks to the PC via wifi.
I just start the app, place my Galaxy phone in front of me and it works . . . very well.

I missed your post about SimHub but found it myself yesterday and it's great.

It runs as a windows app and comes with a number of dashboards, but also has a full dashboard designer built in. It automatically picked up Afterburner allowing me to use a lot of data from that on a dashboard. It also has a plugin for ptracker and assetto. Like Z1 it can also see other people on the track which is can show on a map or have a timing screen. It also has an SDK so you can make your own plugin to provide any data you want to the app and use it on the dashboard. It also allowed you to bind button presses to functions that you can't usually set up such as turning driver names on and off.

You just click the dash you want and click 'Display on second monitor' or 'Display on phone' if you want to show it on your phone.

It looks a lot nicer than the Z1 built in dashboards and being able to create your own is very cool. It had some nag screens and limited the dashboards to 10fps unless you donate, but the minimum donation was 3 euros and I got my license key straight away.

There is a link on that page to another page of custom addon dashboards.

I put some carbon wrap on the front of my LCD case and did some better cable management. Looks quite good now.

Picked up an Aldi 3D printer today, first job after some bracelet beads tests was to make a bracket for my sony phone to mount to the fanatec wheel base. Not bad for the first print job, even though it started to lift off the hot bed.... because some youtuber recommended placing a fan next it lol.

Very neat, amazing technology for the price. Is it very hard to program to achieve the end result that you want?

I'm still trying to work out quality settings and stuff, but, download the 3d file's from thingiverse then modified in the built-in 3d builder (win10), then pop it into the software that came with the printer to create the print file. Put the file on the sd card and go print. You can actually plug the printer into the pc but it's pretty cool that you don't have to. It was easy to set up and use, I spent the most time making sure everything was level.

Going to try this next https://youtu.be/Xxr2GkDVfV8 I don't think it needs the braces but it's something to try.
Edit: You can skip the modified in 3d-builder part for most things, I just needed to merge the bracket piece with the phone case

Good stuff. I'd always liked the idea of having one but with no space for it the wife wouldn't be too happy.

I'd seen stuff like this before on this website:
https://www.opensimrigs.com/collections/wheel-display

They had this which is for the LCD screen I have:
https://www.opensimrigs.com/collections/wheel-display/products/sim-display-enclosure

Was tempted to order one but not at that cost + shipping.

so, doing a lot of unsuccessful web searching for print designs of the OSR and the raspberry ebay case, I've come up with something....maybe. If I could get the exact dimensions of the front panel (and if you need the little cut outs) I could extend a bracket from it to screw into the wheel base. maybe add a curve to the top, leave an opening for the shift lights or whatever. so long as you're happy with the current position though

Nice. I think with the ebay case the screen sits in those little notches I can't remember 100% now. It has a port on the back for when using with a Pi which is why the OSR one is so deep. I assume it has the two plates as the backplate holds it all in.

The LEDS on the CSL Elite base are pointless, can't see them with either rim I have  ;D I did read there was going to be a firmware update to disable them but haven't seen it.

I was thinking this plate would replace the one you have carbon wrapped. The rest of the pi box you have would remain the same and basically sit in the same position it is currently, only it would be bolted to the wheel base through the new plate. How do have it mounted now, double side tape? Only going by the pictures you posted...
