Ultra Wide Monitors
« on: May 24, 2015, 10:07:53 PM »
Any one using one of the new ultra wide 34inch 3440 x 1440 IPS monitors for racing?
I went shopping for 3 screens and then came across these that hover around the $1000 mark.

Pros; wide, no bezels, not to resource hungry, virtual screen splits for work use.
Cons: Price, not quite as wide as triples.
Questions: Will AC support it properly?  Does it give sufficient side view like triples.

Well triples are 5760 x 1080, so that's a wider ratio. I imagine you'll see a little more of the sides, but not as much as triples.

Why not get 3 of these? :)

It's in fact not much wider than a regular one - well, by about 25% only (or ~31% of the old one if you calculating up)
See the aspect ratio:
21:9 vs 16:9 ("full HD")

The triples equate to
3*16 : 9 =  48:9 (!!!)

I've actually got the 1920x1200 triples, it's a few extra pixels, and 16:10 ratio.  So mine are 48:10.

I'm sure I don't need all that - it's nearly a 5:1 ratio (4.8:1 to be exact).
But I'd not go below 3:1 (27:9) ratio, really.  And I'd like it to be 40+ inches.  That I'd change to, potentially.  Although I use these to work (a lot more than to play) and I need the screen real estate.  The bezels I could do without, but no biggie, really.

Edit: ugh, on the "Not resource hungry" front...
3440 x 1440 = 4,953,600 pixels

single:
1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels

triples:
3x1920x1080 = 6,220,800 pixels

so single:   2mp,
new wonder:  5mp
triple full HD: 6mp

I'd say it'll be plenty resource hungry...

I'd still get 3 good quality thin-bezel 27" ones instead - for the same price :)

I had gone out to look at these - http://www.mwave.com.au/product/aoc-i2777fq-27-5ms-full-hd-hdmi-flicker-free-led-monitor-with-speaker-ab55716
but on seeing the physical size, three of them would be a bit like Imax in my office.  Also not convinced by the 27 inch still being 1920x1080 but stretched out.
Considering 24-25 inch 1920 x 1080 triples might be a better balance between office space and the desired effect.

Wouldn't it be weird how the screen wouldn't wrap around you like you can get from angling 2 monitors on the edges of a front monitor?  so you would be looking to the left to see something you would normally see by looking sideways... get me?

That's a good point.
Stupid games render the super-wide screens usually with the same distortion parameters - hence the stretching at the edges.

Altho, again, it's not that wide that curved monitor.  It maybe a barely noticeable effect, there.

Triple screens arrived yesterday . . . what a difference . . . the amount you can see on track is so much better.  It might be my imagination but it seems the ability to see ahead and pick a line is vastly improved.  Wonder if it will make me any faster!!  ;D

That sounds great, mate!
Make sure you set it to a realistic 'window' so you see the track as it should be.  It'll be very unusual first - compared to a single screen - as your perception of speed will go down a notch or two.  But it makes it even easier to find the braking points & the apexes.  You'll get used to it in a few hours and it's well worth that little time IMO.

Good times!

Yes, enjoy! It took me a little time fiddling around with FOV, seat position, monitor angles etc until I was happy with it.

Wish I had the space for a desk and triple monitor setup. I currently sit as close to my 32" TV as I can. :o

After routing cables and mucking around I didn't get much time to have a run on it last night but certainly some adjustments are on the cards to get it right.

I first tried to put real dimensions in the triple screen app, but it puts you way too close to the dashboard, so I ended up just tweaking the numbers until it subjectively looked right.
