Assetto Corsa / Re: Poll: Car for season 2

Btw, we just had a half a race in AACL in these cars...what can I say; it's a tad boring.   There's little happening in these cars, and since there's no bump drafting, overtaking is extremely hard.

We had a train of cars going, and that's it until someone makes a serious mistake, which isn't that often since the car is very forgiving.

I really-really recommend against a season with this car right now (with bump drafting it'd be a different matter, probably)

Thanks Darren.  Yeah I did not see any difference whatsoever.

I've heard it whispered that "The Wally,  codes as he drives and inputs direct to the bus in machine code when sim racing"
I heard he can whistle the programs onto tape...lately having problems because USB does not understand whistle.

Actually on the re-entry;  (mostly for those with little experience)
- do not enter if it's the racing line you're merging onto
- do not expect the oncoming cars to brake/avoid for you.  They do NOT expect you to come in their path, especially if they're in the middle of a fray.

A lone oncoming car on a fairly straight part can take evasive action, but otherwise you must enter the track almost like you were coming out from behind a stop sign.

If there's no way to re-enter, you either continue on the grass, slowly, watching for an opening, or simply wait for the field to pass.

And if you can actually do all this, you're legend :)

Sometimes you can use openings to cross onto the other side if your re-entry would be on the racing line, but be extra careful;  someone might be in the middle of a passing manoeuvre right there, others may get surprised by your entry and take evasive action - thus hitting you or crashing out themselves....

How about Dickram?

You guys can't go wrong in the naming department :D

I posted a bug /question about starting from the grid in the support forums.

Dick, when you spend time practising, setting up your car, qualifying and then just get punted back in the field, I think you'll see how annoying that can be!

I don't know, maybe I'm too new and innocent. I find those 'annoying' situations more exciting than anything."Am I going to make it through this hairpin 3 cars wide? Is he going to give me room? Is there enough room? or am I going to be in the kitty litter? I find that very exciting. Split second decisions and my whole race is over. Maybe someone else too. That's racing...Am i going about it all wrong?

Yes.  You are having too much fun :D

But I reckon once you get more competitive, you'll probably get worked up too.  It's the emotional investment - and of course the time invested, too - that gets wiped out instantly.  And that is a bad feeling, trust me.  The more competitive you are, the more it hurts.  There's no winning from the back of the grid (well, maybe if you're Darren...)

Guys you don't have to participate every series, you can jump onto the reserve list for a few weeks - one series is exactly the brake you're looking for, Isn't it?

It's Wally who may need the break...;)

Gents, WRT to starting from pits:
if you know your position well, and it's high enough, then just go right ahead and give those positions slowly back over the course of the 1st lap.  I don't think it's worth trying to slot in right at 4th.  And it's easy enough to take the outside line a couple of times.

If you started from the lower half, then going out in front would be a bit dangerous - you'll be much slower than those around you.  So maybe try to slot in, carefully.

Well, the DTM is a nicer car to drive, especially due to the proper gearing in place :)
But I rather like to race the groupA.  There's something not right overtaking Darren in a faster car.  I want to do it in the same car.  Just once...:)

First race was made funny, I thought it'll be lonely as I had a bit of pace on everyone around, but Freezer came out of the pits well in front, so we battled. I was stuck behind, without bump draft it's a bitch to overtake.  I've managed to mess up a T1 where he seemed to stick to the outside but then suddenly changed for the inside - I've tried to cross over to the outside to avoid but I've clipped the left rear.   Then after we've stopped I thought we can go past each other, but we couldn't.  Somehow the perspective or the car size isn't quite correct here I reckon.  The car is longer than it seems from the inside.  So we've lost a few positions.

But after this, I had a good couple of battles on my hand which made the 1st race fun, so no regrets :)

The second.  Well, Freezer started from the grid this time, so it was a lonely ride - a half a second to one second per lap advantage is enough to make the race a boring hot-lapping session.

If I get the DTM again, I'd like to opt to swap back to the group A in exchange for a couple of points, please ;)

Good racing and good fun, gents!

What is the appeal of the L49?
I thought it would be too old and not suitable for twisty circuits at all. Or is that what makes it appealing?

Multiple things, but mainly that it's a no frills, honest, simple car (no wings, simple to setup).  It's a fun car (once you 'get it').  If you mis-handle it, it bites like a girl :)

It teaches the most important things: throttle control & patience.  You can't just floor it, unless you're dead straight.  But to get anywhere (even to turn in properly), you need throttle.

When you really find your balance with it, it's a fantastic feeling to turn in on balancing throttle & slightly over the edge of slipping.
Put this car at mid-ohio, and you have a test that sorts out the real men quickly :D

Actually, most forums seem to have problem with the youtu.be format.   Some at least handle the youtube.com links.
The SMF is updating itself regularly, so if it would be in, it would be working.  There maybe some module or package or whatnot to handle it, but I CBF'ed, it's super simple to cut the code out of a url :)

...or just post the link, if someone is interested they'll click.

Let's hope this is just a fun-voting and Wally makes an executive decision to do the Lotus49 next season!

Hm...maybe I should rig the voting

That's great, I really like Donington.   I'm not good at it, but I like it a lot :)
I'm just waiting for mid-ohio now, I'm sure it'll come.

Yeah it was a no-frills 1600cc open wheeler, no wings, street tyres.  I believe it was based on the formula ford, especially likely since there was an F1800 - the 1800cc version with a bit more options, like better tires - looked like a modern, upscaled version of it.

They both were a real handful if you did not treat them exactly as you should...ask anyone :)  And this is why I loved racing them, they always made you toe the line.  You always had to be mindful of your driving style.
