Australian Assetto Corsa League, Tuesday nights / Re: Ballast« on: October 22, 2015, 06:18:17 PM »I dunno guys,so complicated.During qual in the last race twice my hotlap has been ruined by a very heavy driver this is not fair and a bit silly for both parties. I remember being once this Tuesday ahead of you in quali. I was on my first fast lap so I tried to do my time, but I noticed you were faster. So as soon as I made a mistake, I let you pass (just after Stowe). But in truth I did it mostly because I wanted to run my second attempt without anybody in less than a second either ahead or behind me. Of course with the early rounds big swings in ballast, somebody is going to be much faster than others... perhaps you are not used to? 1082
Australian Assetto Corsa League, Tuesday nights / Re: Ballast« on: October 22, 2015, 09:24:32 AM »But the biggest reward of making sure you have the appropriately balancing ballast is close racing! Sure, you can drop all your ballast by throwing a race, but then all you've earned is a boring hotlapping session out in front the next race. Ahahah! I'd forgotten you are a behavioralist But you are right. Touché. 1083

Wally: thank you very much for your replies and FAQ. It is incredible how you manage to cope with all our questions instead of telling us to f** off.
One little thing: "Every system of rules can be gamed." There are theorems about this. In the specific case, we want the ranking order to be the same (that is, we want to make everybody closer, but without inverting positions). Therefore, the plan we want to implement is Maskin-monotonic. Then the theorem says that a system of rules that gives the correct ballasts and cannot be gamed exists. Admittedly, it might be very hard to figure it out and annoying to implement, but it is still a mathematical truth that such a system exists. I am only half-serious, of course, but I thought you would have found this result at least fascinating. 1084
Australian Assetto Corsa League, Tuesday nights / Re: Ballast« on: October 21, 2015, 09:44:31 AM »After last night... will have to have 3 setups ready per race night to cater for the massive swings.Answer: Lap times. I was out in front but I purposely only pushed enough to stay in front. You set a best lap 3/10ths quicker than my best. Stan was also marginally quicker on his best time. Christo only did two laps and was out! Personally I would not mind to get this strategic aspect of ballast out. That is why I suggested to Wally to use something closer to average lap time instead of fastest lap. I also see that there are a few things one can do to get their ballast down. For example, if you crash on lap 1, your ballast remains the same for next race if you just leave. But you can also go out, set a slow lap time, and lose 40 or 50kg! In general, in a bad race you might decide not to push as 15th or 18th place does not make much of a difference, while 50kg of ballasts next race might mean 10 positions. Similarly, you might wish to try a 2 stops strategy one day, and then realize this will cost you extra ballast for next race, although you are not really "faster" than others. Last season we had an extra point for fast laps, encouraging you to try hard even if your race was not going well. Now we are reversing the incentives, instead. Don't misunderstand me: every rule is a rule, and once a rule is in place, you play that game, and I am sure we will all have lots of fun doing it. But personally I found last season's ballast rules easier to understand and less incline to be bent. But this is probably just my preferences. So please do not mind about it too much 1085

Congrats, Joe. And good luck with everything.
I did not have great expectations for the night: I am not usually in the top 3 spots, so starting with one of the highest ballasts looked tough. Quali was indeed very hard, P18, but I felt I was doing fine (3 tenths from Matthew who had very similar ballast and is usually faster than I am). At the start, I managed to avoid contacts in the first 3 or 4 corners, but it costed me some position. Then I was starting regaining a bit, thanks to a few ahead of me going long at Luffield and Copse. I was following very close at the entrance of Maggots, when the driver ahead of me lifted off in a point I did not expect and I could not react fast enough. Damage and then spin. Race ended there. No ballast change for Race 2, as I did not score any lap time in Race 1. A bit of an imperfect incentives scheme here: I could have just run one slow lap on purpose and lose like 30kg (Matthew lost 50, for example). I didn't, as it seemed unfair, but one could very easily do this. Quali 2 was even harder than Quali 1, but this time it was probably me not finding the rhythm. Anyway, P16. I had a good start and found some decent space to get to P10 by the end of the first lap. After Mael and Grubbet came to contact ahead of me, I had a free track all for me and could finally focus on finding a rhythm. The rest of the race looked really like an F1 race: pace, pace, Wally trying an undercut, fast lap, pit stop, rejoin ahead of him, fast lap, manage to keep Freezer just behind me when he rejoins, a few tense lap to try to get freezer off my draft, pace, pace, trying to manage the last laps, see Jeremy is arriving fast, last lap: 1.3 second gap to him, I can make it. He goes of at Maggots. 5th place is done. Next round seems hard: still 108kg... 1086

Sure: I know it is my fault, as I was the one behind. But it was me the heavy one (118kg), not him (0kg).

Wally: as I said, I did not mean to criticize the method (or you, of course). And I am completely sure you know what you are talking about when you say it will smooth out pretty soon. I just saw some glitches in these first races and thought to share with you so you can make the most informed plan.
Example today: I started race 1 and as soon as I thought the lap 1 mess was ending, the driver ahead of me lifted (or braked) at Maggots (!). So of course I ended up rear-ending him, losing the front wing downforce, and crashing at the next corner. This suggests that although the pace was similar between me and him, the lines and braking points were so different that it might get dangerous. I wish you understand I am in no way criticizing the organization. Of course I am disappointed, but not for the result, but because I really enjoy driving in this league. I really look forward to it every week, and it is a testament of how well it is organized. Now back for race 2. 1089

Hi GB: virtuasimulazioni website says they will only implement DRS on the FR3.5 when and if we have full DRS zones implementation on Assetto Corsa. So: it is not available now but will probably be in future updates.
As for the 2 tents per 10 kg. It is probably not linear, but in the ranges I could experiment with, I had something like a second every 35kg, so more like 3 tenths per 10kg. But yeah, we are around those numbers. I have also noticed suspensions setup changes a lot. With 126kg I run fairly hard suspensions (just a tad below default, but with softer front dumpers). But if I run the same setup on 0kg, I skip like a stone throughout most of the hangar straight. Also, gearing might be different, as top speed is obviously quite different. This brings another little issue: if we change ballast for every race (as opposed to every round) it will be harder for everybody to have a decently balanced car. Wally: please do not take this as a criticism of the method itself. You are clearly putting some clever effort into it. But I do agree with Marty that ballast should balance the race and not invert the results. To make a silly example: a perfect ballast would make GB .8 of a sec faster than me instead of 2 seconds, leaving Marty, Matthew, and Jeremy in between and giving me a chance to battle for the podium at most venues. As it is, it risks making me fastest by a second or slower by 5 seconds depending on who had a clean lap in the previous race. I am sure you are right that the edges will smooth out after a few rounds, but perhaps a smoother (or stepped) implementation as you suggested in the last posts might work better. 1090
Australian Assetto Corsa League, Tuesday nights / Re: New pit lane penalty app: 1.6 for download« on: October 20, 2015, 07:25:13 AM »I noticed in the practice server that entering the server and simply accelerating out of the pit box can generate a speed limit violation, this makes no sense as the auto limiter is at 80 and I got a violation a couple times while doing this. Someone may be lucky enough to get a penalty twice in one stop if they speed in and then the app decides to give them another when exiting the pit box with an auto pit limiter while not speeding at all. Marty: are you sure it was a pit speed limit violation and not a track cut? Never happened to me, but it happened to see a track cut when joining the fast lane from the pit stall... 1091

Tough night for me. That is, I was actually feeling sick (for obvious reasons, I spare you the details). That said, I was able to find some sort of rhythm for quali1, battling for the 4th place on the grid with Phil, who seemed to have the tiniest edge on me. I think he probably made a mistake on his last lap, so I managed to start 4th.
Unfortunately race 1 went bad. I had a great jump off the start, but with a three-way wall ahead of me, I had to lift after 2 or 3 hundred meters. Tried hard to stay out of troubles through t1-t3, but my slow pace brought Phil on my right through the chicane and we touched, ricocheted on Jeremy's gearbox and spun off-track. I tried my best to recover all the positions I could, but in 10 laps I could not do much. Q2 was a disaster. I could not feel the car well, and had to abort most of my laps (I think I managed only 1). I realized after the race that maybe it was because of the ballast, but at the time I did not notice I had any. Again a great jump from the start, from 10th to 5th. I am now behind Freezer. Faster here, slower there, but with Stan Daam pretty close behind forcing my eyes on the mirrors. The car still feels a bit strange by lap 4, when I lose a bit of focus entering Acque Minerali and I oversteer into the first bend. Miraculously, I managed to avoid all solid obstacles and get back to the track without damage. The rest of the race was just lapping around: after the pit stop, the car feels better for whatever reason and I manage to find a decent rhythm. But I could only cut the gap from Stan by a pair of seconds of 7 they were. So it was useless. Actually: worse than useless: if I did not try to go for some useless fast laps, now I would have much less ballast next race. POST-IT for the rest of the season: if it's not worth it, go slow. Think wise: think ballast! Ticket to Wally: what if instead of the fastest lap you use average lap disregarding outliers (as in: drop best 2 and worst 2 laps and take the average of the others). I mean: we do not want to discourage last laps heroic charges. 1093
Australian Assetto Corsa League, Tuesday nights / Re: Season 9 Sign up and Details: Formula Renault 3.5« on: October 14, 2015, 12:02:39 AM »Hi Wally,The ballast is worked out by your fastest lap time, not how well you did in the race. Ok, understood: I guessed it was probably something like that. Looking at race 2 laps, it looks like I'll be quite heavy next time. Better I take it into account when (trying to) setting up the car. Cheers! 1094

Hi Wally,
can you clarify how ballast works? I thought that after my very disappointing first race I would have been ballast-free in the second, but instead I had quite a bit. (Not complaining, of course. Just curious.) Also: the name links on race 1 reports seem not to work. Does not really matter, but thought you might care. Thanks a lot for the great organization. Looks like it will be a great season! 1095
