I had some fantastic racing in this series and tonight was no different. I love these old fast F1 circuits and I had some awesome battles through the night. My biggest problem with the Ferrari was turn 1. I simply couldn't carry enough speed through it to keep the Lancia's at bay on the corner exit. Even changing the ratio of 4th to help give it a kick on the exit didn't help me and it was only in the tow of other cars that I could accelerate fast enough to stop a turn 2 overtake. Surprisingly tyre wear wasn't an issue and I guess not having a turbo help the fuel economy as the car was great to drive at 9 10th's but trying to use that last 10th usually ended up in wall! What I did learn, was that IF I got a good start I could hold off the faster cars for the bulk of the lap by ensuring I held my lines and made them go around the outside, provided I got a good run through turn 1.
In the feature race I had a great duel with Phil for about 10 mintues until he got a run out of turn 1 and once he was in front his superior lap speed made me a very small spec in his rear view mirror....
Should be the /78 as the /77 weighs less than a tonne and will have too great an advantage over the others.
ah....that would explain why it so was much nicer to drive. Might be something to watch for on Thursday as I automatically thought it was an option as it was selectable when joining the practice server.
I noticed on the practice server there is a Porsche 935/77 but I didn't see it on the list of eligible cars from a post earlier in this thread. Is this a car we can use ? If so, I'd like one.
Exactly G0D, I had a choice of Porsche, Porsche or Porsche.
I feel your pain as I am in a similar boat and I really don't want to race a glorified volkswagon...

Where's the blue oval? Surely there'd have to be a Ford option, seeing we're stateside?
Boy that was a tough night of racing...I had thought the long straights of Monza would have been best suited to the BWM M1, however its legs were simply too short to keep pace with Bacchulum and his Ferrari, I think he's done enough to take the championship now, so well done! It was really interesting how difficult I found it was to stop the M1. It's lack of a 5th gear required caution during down shifting it was easy to lose concentration and cause compression lock ups, resulting in spinning off into the weeds. For the bulk of the lap I felt comfortable however the Ascari curves proved to be my achilles. I struggled all night to stop and rotate the car here without riding the curbs or dipping a front right into the spoon drain like curbing and exit all crossed up and out of control. Stopping any later than the 200m board meant it was John Derre season.
That said, the racing around here was awesome! In all three races I had some fantastic duels with a lot of different drivers and that 30 minute race was mentally tiring. After the first two sprints I was getting comfortable running around in the high 41's, low 42's, yet in the feature race, 43's were extremely difficult to achieve. The additional fuel really made the task a lot harder. I spent a lot of the race chasing Phil and I felt it was easy to get close, but in the same car it was extremely difficult to get enough to be in a position to pass. We had a couple of battles towards the end of the race however I made (yet another) a mistake in Ascari and decided to give up the fight as I was concerned about running out of fuel. As it turned out the race ended up at the right time for me as I doubt I would have finished another lap with what fuel I had.
Choosing cars for the next two rounds is going to be interesting as I really don't want to touch any of the Beetles as they seem woefully slow compared to the other makes. Perhaps some BOP intervention might save them, but thankfully we're not racing at LeMans so that won't happen
Practice server is currently set to standard Monza Phil.
So which Monza is the race on?
Tuesday night it was set to Testing Monza which didn’t have the first chicane and that was terrific. If we ar using a different layout then I may need to change my car selection
I had decided to use the Facetti for Silverstone but after reading Bradc report I may have a rethink. I just want at least one car track combination that is not testing me to the limit, the only car I have felt comfortable and competitive in has been the Zakspeed Capri
Sorry.... I actually think Silverstone should be the track for the Facetti as it’s fast, smooth and has minimal corners, so it should be a real weapon there....
Well that’s the end of the dream....
In what I can only call a shocker I ended up having a night long battle with the bumps, a lack of grip and the trackside grass. I really thought the long legs of the Ferrari would have worked well here and that I’d be able to cope around the corners, how wrong I was. With the pace of the Fords up front I could never qualify better than I did in 4th and I must admit it was a real gift when the grid was a four wide front row and I powered off into the lead knowing it was only a matter of time before the field went past. Needless to say it seemed p2 was cursed as each time someone went past me into 2nd they later spun (without my assistance) and I managed to steel 2nd place.
The reverse grid race was damage limitation as I saw my championship lead disappear each time the fat Ferrari found a corner and it really was bloody hard to hang on, wishing I didn’t have force feedback turned on as it was an effort to simply steer the car over the bumps. If only there was a stadium truck option for this round it might have been a better pick.
The long race was difficult too, knowing how bad the Ferrari was as doing anything involving turning the wheel I decided to make it a 1stop race and hope that with fresher tyres I might salvage something other than dead last. Early in the race there was an Escort which slid into me, resulting in me sliding into Bacchulum and I decided to do the right thing and wait for my championship rival to recover. Needless to say I never saw him again, such was the speed of his Capri. Taking a pit stop mid race didn’t work and I think I was very lucky not to finish dead last.
For those thinking about the Ferrari I would suggest it’s taken with great caution and used on a billiard table smooth track. Granted I have no idea when it comes to setups but with running 1 in toe-in made a massively improvement and if you know how to make a softly sprung car handle then it could be a weapon, however I fear these issues are something which would have taken a new model car to improve.....
