Title: ARSE challenge Tryout race and sign-up - Tuesday Nov 4
Post by: Wally on October 28, 2014, 02:05:47 PM
Cobra (standard AC one) at Spa.
ARSE are using the 458 GT2 at Silverstone, so we'll race that combo as well. I'll combine best laps from both races.

Schedule
Race 1 - Cobra at Spa
Qualifying 1 at 8:30pm Eastern Daylight savings time - 30 mins.
Race 1 - 7 laps.
No damage, normal tyre wear.

Race 2 - Ferrari 458 GT2 at Silverstone
Qualifying 2 - 30 mins.
Race 2 - 10 laps.

This is the qualifying race, open to the first 24 who sign up below, for our ARSE/XGN inter-league challenge, which will most likely be the following week. The top 12 (or matching ARSE numbers) fastest guys will represent XGN*. If I can find out what combo the ARSE guys want to race, we'll do that as well.

7 lap race or two, the usual time. I'll firm up the details later.

* If I'm not in the top 12, I'm still going to take position 12.

Sign up:

1. Wally
2. Flattop
3. Gratulin
4. Bird
5. EdWood
6. Schmittez
7. Marty

Yeah better put me down Wally.

Are we able to get a decision from Arse by then so we can test that combo as well.?  Noppoint finding out what they want to run shortly before the event when they will obviously know what we are running.

What gives with their choice? They've been able practice our choice for a few days now. When are they going to let us know theirs?

Gents, here's a setup to try - it may help a bit. It has more camber, less toe-in, proper brake balance...not much else.  But it's a step up from the default, I reckon.

Run a 2:45.9 at Spa.

Btw: Darren is at 43.2 according to RSR.

Its a car I have barely driven, will give your set a go. I have a server up with this assuming it has died but is likely filled with idiots. I can make it an xgn passworded server instead if people want just let me know. Dod have some fun in the car the day the rc was released but didnt really set a lap.

Dare I say it but are you using paddles Bird?  marty might be able to test the difference between paddles and H shifter around here in the Cobra.  You might be losing as much as 2 seconds a lap around Spa with paddles though.

I haven't heard their car choice yet. I'm on holidays in Melbourne at the moment, so I'm not on the forums quite so much at the moment.

Cobra may not be effected as much, Darrens time is done on paddles and its quite awkward on a shifter but probably a similar speed. I will run some laps tonight or over the weekend as I really havent had a chance the last couple days. I think my server should still be up but I havent done a single lap on that cobra one yet.

I'm indeed still paddling along...I shall endeavour to install the shifter (on the right, this time) and give it a go.  Previously I put it on the left "to get used to the aussie method" and I was hopeless... But I've had 10+ years to practice shifting with right hand, nothing with left.

The S/C or not? ???

shelby_cobra_427sc

the others in the 'cars' directory can be deleted, they are the old "mod" cars, not the official realease ones.

I just re-read what I wrote... oppps

You only need the one cobra directory in the cars directory...

but you can leave them there, they will do NO harm.
When you enter a server we will only be referencing the new one.
shelby_cobra_427sc

(Yes my previous message was too broad and 'dangerous')

Bird thanks for the setup, I did try to see what I could come up with on my own but all I did was make it worse. Tried yours and first lap out was a 2:44.8 with mine only running a few laps I got to mid 46. Im sure there is a bit more time to get there but at least I have some grip now.  ;D

Great to hear, Marty!

I've tried the shifter in the meantime, and I can safely say I won't use it. :)
I'm a good 3-4 seconds slower /lap , and if damage is on I can say goodbye to the transmission in about 3 laps max - sometimes as quick as within one corner.

I've never raced with a shifter, and I think that shows.

Btw I've tried it on a drag strip as well, and I wasn't any faster...and that's suspicious.  I don't believe the shifter is faster at all, sorry.

Can I join in? :)

Tried some Cobra in Spa with stock settings , did a 2:44.1, its pretty challenging to drive this car in Spa..
I tried Bird's setup and I kind of prefer the stock setting more ..though I think i might need to try run it again as It does seem to make the Cobra much more stable.

It seems the cobra probably has no boost with shifter like the elise SC does, seems car dependant but I only ran it with shifter. Didnt notice the damage but is set at 100% on my server where I ran some laps. I will probably run some laps tomorrow on the server and see if I can get down to Darrens time at least, my laps were pretty conservative just trying to figure out the car as I havent ran it as much as most of the rest of the XGN crew.

Pretty good time there mate, quite a fun car to drive around this track. I did try it a the new Silverstone short layout and didnt like it much there but most cars are fun at Spa.  ;)

Before Kunos took over the Cobra mod the original modern had released a fix that "equalised" shifter and paddle performance.
Title: Re: ARSE challenge Tryout race and sign-up - Tuesday Nov 4
Post by: Guybrush Threepwood on November 01, 2014, 09:57:19 AM
After doing some testing I think there is about half a second between paddles and shifter.  I think because most corners are taken in second and top gear is 4th there probably isn't as much chance for the shifter to make a large difference.  Possibly also cars with more torque/power aren't affected as much???

Anyway, half a second is a fair "equalizer" IMO.

Hey Bird, if the setup you posted is a modification of my Blackwood setup you might want to try reducing the rear rebound damper around Spa.  This should give you a bit more stability and then you can change some of the spring/anti-roll bar/camber, etc. to make it turn a little better.

Cheers.

ARSE are going to use the 458 GT2 at Silverstone GP. On Tuesday night, we'll have a tryout race with that combo as well as the Cobra.

I've just fiddled with the base IIRC,  I have never been too good with finer suspension toning - I leave that to the engineers here. :)

We should somehow try and grab Darren's setup, those used to be absolutely magnificent.

I see your getting closer to Darrens time though hes probably doing 22's in private. Also no shifter so you must not be faster with it in this combination. If you have a setup to share would be nice as I really havent done much good to the setup in this car when I tried a few laps.

Spent a bit of time fiddling with setups.  Definitely faster with H shifter - currently have a 42.8 in RSR, but should be able to pip the current WR easily enough with a bit of practice.

Puon is a real bitch with the shifter though, but coming out of the first corner and chicane it makes up a lot of time.

Yep , at most softs could last 10mins then it starts to make times worse than mediums. Mediums would be probably be around 1s slower.

After trying out marty's setup , can get 1:58.8 with softs.
for Wing settings , 3 3 is great with the softs but bad for race with mediums , using 4 4 is much more better in medium for me atleast, much better than using 3 4 as the car doesnt have too much understeer on the high speed corners while not oversteering much.

Yes the medium are slower ,I have tried them  before and they are slower but maybe that's what you want for the race, once the tyres are gone,,,,,are gone ???

I'll see how I go tonight but hotlapping the Fez @ Silverstone I can't get 40fps. :-\
I doubt I'll be able to keep that with a full grid.....

You've probably tried everything but the 2 biggest fps improvements for me came from turning of PP completely (20% improvement) and turning off smoke completely.

No password. Its a  pre-booked grid. You just have to join it.

Wally can you make the track grip 100% for practice.  It's no good to practice on a track at 93%.

Well I was going to come and race, but I was testing out my ability to stream and got caught up streaming Fallout: New Vegas and completely forgot about it. oh well hopefully there wasn't anyone who wanted to race but couldn't because there wasn't any more spots.

No worries, we had room on the server for all.
