Race
What to say? The short version race report is: I crashed. Immediately. Badly.

With simulator's magic on, though, that's not all, and I thankfully do not have to report from Liege Hospital.

I could not get any heat in my medium tyres. So, after seeing I was apparently almost competitive on softs (qualified 2nd) I decided to try a 2-stop strategy and aim for something like a 6th place. Start was really good and exited La Source very fast. I did not want to risk it, so I lifted for Eau Rouge,* but---with replay's insight---with visibility hindered by GB close ahead, I probably missed my usual line and hit the left curb not straight enough. The car started to get loose. I could keep it straight for a bit, but in the end there was nothing to do for my limited skills. Concrete to the left; bouncing middle of the track; back left to avoid a carnage; concrete again. I guess it is mostly lack of experience with first-lap nuisances, as GB said.

I restarted from pits some 35 seconds behind the pack and tried to keep a good pace to catch up with the back of it before my first stop. Things worked out pretty well until I again revealed my inexperience by being too aggressive behind Simone and causing us to spin at the last chicane. Scusa!!! Anyway: we both lost quite crucial 10 seconds with that. But in the end it only costed me 1 position, I think.

Season
This was my first ever sim-racing season, so I guess I would like to add a few words. First of all: thank you all. It was a lot of fun, an amazing experience, and it looks like you changed my home's dining schedule to Australian mode for most Tuesdays to come. In particular: thanks a lot to Wally for the impeccable organizations; to GB and Marty or the many advices and coping up with my stupid setup questions; to Rolz and Joe for the kind words of encouragements; and to Matthew, Stan Daam, and Wally for the many duels.

I really feel I learned a lot about driving and racing (and a bit about how these things called cars actually work). This was my main objective in getting into simracing, so I am very happy with it. I have also learned that I am not as crap as I feared. My 5th position in the ranking is definitely inflated by the many of you who had to miss several races, but I had those pair of days when I felt I could keep up with the fastest ones and I have even managed to get two podium finishes. It most likely sounds silly to most of you, but it has been both a huge pleasure and a great satisfaction for me.

Most of all, it was quite fun to get to know you guys a little bit, and I really appreciated you never made me feel like the new stupid guy (despite all evidence indicates I am the new stupid guy). I guess there remains just three things to be done: taming the FR3.5, trying to win a race, and figure out how to understand what you all say over teamspeak!

*Bacchulum: I know, but names of corners that are now not what they once were are what they are: stat rosa pristina nomine, nomina nuda tenemus. Furthermore, as there are 3 corners and 2 names, I suppose we have to be a little flexible :)

Grat, the FR3.5 doesn't have DRS anyway.

Oh,... I thought I was said it had... Not that I saw any, but... Anyway: thanks for letting me know.

Just one other thing: FR will probably also be the first mod to get the new tyre model...

Why, oh, why it is all so complicated!

Hi Wally,

I am pretty sure you know all this, but from the last stream from Stefano it looks like:

1. if we go for FR we won't have a detection zones for the DRS. Personally, I would not mind if they give us a chance to simply block it on the server, but as it is not part of the setup, I doubt it will be on the fixed setup update.
2. GT3 tyres will be updated all at once, but this might be for 1.3 or an update mid-season.

I guess we should take also these things in consideration. I.e., if we would like to use the DRS, then why not to delay a FR season to when it will be better implemented. Just my 2 very stupid pennies.

1114
My fault, then. I thought it was at 10am (I have seen you mentioned in first post).

1115
To me it looks partially sunny but after quite some rain during the night. So I'd say there should be more light and a bit of a warmer surface, but the rest should be pretty much the same... maybe 87% but drying?  :)

I correct it for you:

...though I'll probably be out of the country for the whole of December and early January, so I might miss the end of the season).

...btw, Wally: how do you plan to deal with the 3 "versions" of the car and DRS?---Not even sure if it has DRS, as I do not see it in the ECU tab... I think you are hoping for 1.3 to have race-DRS working as Stefano mentioned. Am I right?)...
The season will be finished before December, most likely.

AC already has DRS for cars that support it. You have to bind a specific DRS key to activate and cancel DRS.
Yes, I have it mapped. Just did not figure out whether it was working on the FR3.5. Will try again.

As for how to use it, I was referring to Stefano's recent work on implementing DRS zones (as opposed to activate DRS on every straight).

Very few race reports and videos this time around... maybe we should consider a ballast-reduction for good media coverage in order to incentivize more reports :)

For those of you interested in the realism of the model: good media coverage brings sponsors, which gets you money for small extras in the car---simulated though a ballast reduction of a few kg. Max coverage (good report+videos+gossip in a single week) could bring about 8kg of ballast reduction, while average coverage (a good report, but nothing more) only brings 4kg of ballast reduction.

Personally, everything is so new that I am excited about both (though I'll probably be out of the country for the whole of December and early January, so I might miss the end of the season).

The Formula Renault is definitely more of a challenge for me, which is both a cool and a crap thing. The one-make sounds like a nice drivers' challenge, but the learning curve is really steep on these cars, and the car's setup is so complicated that I might have to give up on understanding what most of it is about (btw, Wally: how do you plan to deal with the 3 "versions" of the car and DRS?---Not even sure if it has DRS, as I do not see it in the ECU tab... I think you are hoping for 1.3 to have race-DRS working as Stefano mentioned. Am I right?).

The GT3 has the nice feature of the variance of the cars, which might create nice races. On the other hand, it is more similar to Season 8. So I might not learn as much as I am learning now.

All in all: I don't know what to vote for, but if any of you has good ideas and arguments, it might be easy to tilt my preference one way or the other.

ROLZ: any team preference?

Thanks. I owed it to you ;)

1121
(in honour---and memory---of my teammate Rolz, most of the report is written in the first plural person.)

Lots of excitement at DA Racing this week for the second Italian round of the season. We knew we had to show our fans we had not given up our chance at a season podium after last week poor performance in Germany. Our sensations were good, on a track that historically suited us well (no idea why---as mentioned in the pre-race chat).

We expected a tough race, and so decided to sacrifice a bit of top speed for consistency. As usual, our quali1 was a bit disappointing, but managed to start just behind Struggle Street's duo.

RACE1: At the start, we took advantage of the in-house battle between Jeremy and Matthew (Jeremy: I know your wheel was off, but I like to think you were defending your position from Matthew :) ) but with Matthew getting a bit wide mid-corner at San Donato, we had to settle for 3rd. I spent the first 2 laps trying to keep at a reasonable distance from Matthew, who was pushing hard on his softs, sliding a bit wide here and there. I was a bit faster in the mid part of the track, but did not want to slow us down with a battle, as with my high-downforce I did not want Freezer behind to get close. The last 6 laps were simply fantastic. At the end of lap 3 I decided to attack in the only place it looked possible: I was exiting faster than Matthew from Correntaio (big 180° right-hander) and could brake later at the last corner. So I did, and passed him, but we touched a little and I was not sure if my move was clean, so when he followed me on the straight with his higher speed, I did not feel like defending the inside as I originally planned (I could brake very late at San Donato, so that was the idea) and he passed me again. The battle went on for the next 5 laps, with Matthew getting a bit of an advantage on the start/finish straight at each lap (around .6 of a sec) and me chasing him very close throughout the rest of the lap, trying to force a mistake. As his tyres were getting worse lap by lap, I could get closer and closer, but I was never able to put myself clearly side-by-side to him. What a race! My hands were still shaking at the end, and so I clicked "return" instead of "save replay". Thank you, Wally.

RACE2: qualify for race 2 was tougher than expected. We timed the last lap perfectly with the flag, but San Donato was a disaster. The only way to get a decent position was then to be ridiculously aggressive throughout the rest of the lap. Incredibly, the idea of taking both Arrabbiata 1 and 2 flat out worked! So we managed a decent 5th place.

At the start, Phil Raikkonened, but Stan Daam catapulted from behind, so I was still 5th, behind Jeremy and Stan. I knew the race was long, so again I settled for as much pressure on Stan as I could, without attacking, and waiting for others' mistakes. Stan and Jeremy batteld for the first 3 corners in lap 7, and I managed to sneak pass Jeremy (4th). Then on lap 8 it was Stan's turn to go wide at Correntaio, and both Wally and I could go through. I was 3rd, and it felt pretty good. Unfortunately I had a crappy reaction when released from the crew and Wally could pass me in the pit lane. When we rejoined the track, with Stan behind, Jeremy was arriving at San Donato. I went to brake as late as I could and took the entire corner on a big slide, but incredibly I could pull it off. Pheww... Next lap, Jeremy attacks me again on the straight. This time I take the inside line and I can outbrake him safely and keep my position with a nice puff of tyres smoke.

My group was fast, and we closed down on Matthew pretty fast, but he was warping a bit, which forced a battle between me and Wally. I managed to pass him at Correntaio on lap 11, but he could retake the position on the start/finish straight (beautiful move from him: he knows I can brake late at San Donato, and so moves to cover the inside as soon as he can move ahead of me on the straight. Great job). I then tried to force him into a mistake at Scarperia (right hander after Arrabbiata 2) but he resisted well the first time while... well, had to brake late, put my front right on the kerb while still braking, and... yes, I admit it: I spun.

Rejoined track behind Joe, but my top speed was no match for him. I tried a few times to get him on some other parts of the track, but I soon realized it would have ended exactly like it ended with Wally. Well: they were two amazing races in one night already, so I thought I could settle for that amount of fun and back it off a little.

All in all: best race night for me since I have started. It really made me happy!

1122
Thank you so much! I will definitely write a detailed report :)

1123
I'll hold my race report hostage until you release the replay of race 1 l;)

1124
definitely vero. And I also agree with GB that the track is really good. We just do it better ;)

1125
OK, could not resist so I had two laps. The car feels a bit too uncertain to me: I do not feel confident to put the throttle down (especially exit of first corner), but maybe I should get used to it. Surely it does not seem the setup you were using in the video. It feels soft and grippy, but then oversteery mid-corner (especially on the last corner).  But again: this might be just me being unable to use it, or maybe I am so used to my setup that I just don't know how to adapt to yours. Surely it is very nice on the two initial esses (the change of direction is nice) and it is a bit faster on the straight.

I had a look at the numbers, and it is incredible how different they are from mine! The only thing that encourages me is that I understand you are more of a driver than an engineer. Meaning: you do not like playing with setup for too long. Am I right?
