Post by: Wally on April 22, 2020, 11:14:12 AM
Fun run to try the Lotus 98T is up on the practice server. We'll have a few 10 lap sprints.

Track: Hockenheimring (https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/hockenheimring-multi-layout.7223/)

Setups are fixed (to default), except for:

Yep, we're all gluttons for punishment. Have you tried turbo at 100%?????

The overly cambered default setup doesn't help, the full surface of the rear's is rarely used.
I 'choke' the power by short shifting until the aero kicks in, and that's a shit-load more when the tyres are cold. ;)

When you try 100% turbo, use the qualy tyres, you'll feel like a god. 8)

Bah humbug to fixed setups. If the setup proved to be not ideal, then the car is just too ornery to drive around the problem.

yes
and you have to be so light on the right foot.
but i also did it with the longest last gear - which is actually great! but blew my engine in 5 laps :D

Trick is to map a boost up/down button and use it as required during a race . . . as you said the engine won't last long otherwise.

Trick in the setup is to dump some of that 190l odd of fuel.

will need to try mapping the turbo but thast a lot for this (less than) rookie to try handle :)

Yes, it's not the easiest car to drive, that's for sure. I'm just going to set turbo to 10% and go for a relaxing drive....... maybe.

As you'll want to use a gated shifter* I have mapped the turbo to the shifter paddles.

50 to 100ms for your time to change gears vs 220ms with sequential shifting.  :-\

I was half thinking of mapping my gated shifter gears to turbo levels, such that 1st = 10%, 2nd = 20%, through to 6th = 60%. Maybe.

These things are brutal......and I love it  :o
It going to be a very hard night tonight but that’s not a bad thing, playing around with the turbo last night it was interesting to see how much speed is added with each increment of boost. Getting out of the two slow corners is going to be really interesting with such a massive hand grenadine under the right foot 8)

Don't be so sure, it is gutless outside its powerband. 1st gear is needed to keep that turbo singing  :D

I like this car. I think with a little practice would be a fun season but possibly would attract lower numbers

Wow  :o I didn’t expect to have night like that. I really loved not having to worry about setting up the car and simply being able to focus on learning how to drive. These cars were so hard and my brain was absolutely fried by the end of the night but it was great. To say I enjoyed it would be an understatement, but I was shocked by the results....I’m not sure how others felt about these cars but I think they really suited me because you couldn’t drive them at 100% all of the time. I like the fact that you had to think a lot about how you put the power down and drive them carefully because they were so vicious. Part of me loved the fact that if you didn’t respect these cars, you’d end up tank slapping into a wall!

For me, the first two races were more about driving carefully, not making mistakes and managing the car rather than brutal outright speed. I actually like that sort of race management which you don’t get from modern cars which you drive flat out all the time, but I don’t think they’d be everyone’s cup of tea either. The final race were we had no damaged, no restrictions, really threw me. Like others, knowing the car was industruckable I just wound up the boot to 100% and started playing mash with the throttle which didn’t end well...

Yeah, the 0 damage didn't really work out too well in hindsight. I struggle with cars where I can't just mash the throttle!

I left it on 70% and won the race . . . so that says something!

I was definately starting to get used to the car toward the end.  I felt you could light up the rears a bit but still control it so not bad but
as Bradc said, might not be everyones cup of tea.
The starts were crazy, I dropped the boost to 60 and eased it away and found myself absolutely flying past everyone.  One of the starts
i went from 2nd last to 4th before turn two!!

Must say I preferred the last race with damage off, went the other way than Freezer and left it on a 100% Had a fun battle with Joe while moving through the field.

Multitasking is a bit beyond me so adjusting the turbo while driving is not the best idea  ;D

I wasn't as slow as I was expecting to be, but I lacked consistency...was affected by mistakes of others and made mistakes myself.
The starts were just a mess...actually pure luck that I didn't contribute to it.
This car is not a good car for a default setup season imo.
So I got a bit used to it, but I don't think it would be my pick for a season.

Disagree.

For me this is an especially good car for fixed setup. The reason is a decent setup with the Lotus 98T can give a driver a lot of extra speed, spreading the field out even further.  With slower easier cars like the upcoming BMW M1 changing the setup doesn't really matter, there are no real advantage to be found.

Waiting for the counter argue Killa  :P

The reason is a less than ideal setup with the Lotus 98T can give a good driver some trouble but an average driver a lot of extra pain, thus spreading the field out even further.   Slower easier cars like the upcoming BMW M1 shouldn't even be in the consideration as they don't really matter.

Waiting for the counter argument..  :P

I withdraw my statement about the BMW M1 being slow or the implication that it is easy to drive. Its almost more of a handful than the Lotus 98T!

But on fixed setups I will stick to my guns and say that most of us are of roughly equal driving talent (Past few season's Joe excluded). We all mostly average which limit the field spread due to inherent driver talent differences, luck of the day probably plays a bigger part. If KCender and GB participate then it is a different matter. However, they would probably win in any case whether setup changes are allowed or not.

Well I suggested the M1 and I can hardly complete a lap without crashing.  At this stage I was doing better in the Lotus..  ::)

I did also suggest the BMW M235i Racing which is slightly less powerful but a way better handling car . . .

I agree. There are some who are unable or disinclined to spend a lot of time on setups, and then have the gnawing doubt that the fast guys have found a silver bullet setup. A fixed setup levels the playing field a bit more in a car that's already difficult to drive. But ideally, someone would develop a safe setup (whether that be softer springs, more camber, more aero) that becomes the fixed setup. I.e. a setup that I can drive.

Hmm...the tricky question is, 'what's a decent setup?'
Joe says 'default is great', I say 'this car is uncontrollable'. Of course Joe is right because he proves he's faster on default.
Guess basis for a fun season for me is some good close racing and that I actually manage to keep the car on track and cross the finish line.
The option making changes to the setup would help me keeping it on track...that's usually at the expense of the car being willing to turn in easily, max speed in fast turns and top speed.
I'm sure it's not just Joe, who wouldn't like my setup.
However, it helps me finishing the race somewhere in the bulk...whether it's on the podium, 6th or 10th...doesn't matter.

So I disagree on the extra speed thing...making the rear-end more stable usually comes with undesired side effects.  :)
