Title: S26R3: Monza
Post by: Wally on January 29, 2019, 11:18:53 PM
Congratulations to Mael and Bird on the race wins, and to Bird on the overall round 1. With me in a slower car and Mael and ab156 in the faster 911 R, the standings have closed up leaving me with a slim 2 point lead over Mael.

It's going to be an interesting round. I've been in the cheap(ish) Carrera for the last two rounds and done well, moving me to the top of the points, but cash poor. This round, I'll still be in the Carrera, racing against a GT3 RS and a 911R. I don't expect to do as well, so people will catch up points-wise, but then I'll get cash for the final round at the twisty Magione. A longer season would be quite a see-sawing affair. You'd have to time your sees and your saws :)

Poor planning, Wally.
A fast car would be more beneficial at Monza than at Magione. :-X

I have been wondering if the car wally has last week would be good at Monza with its straight line speed

But I'm already 11 points clear in the points,so I can absorb a worse result in one round.

A bit of dodgey going on on the practice server. ???
Humais, current leader, only slowed down once between the start and Lesbo1. :o
JEAN_RODGER's lap seems to be OK though. :'(

Yes, this definitely looks dodgy!

I will be away fire permitting this week

I'm struggling a bit here in the Carrera. The car feels quite different to how it felt at Zandvoort. The back wants to come around a lot more. I guess it's the bigger radius turns.

I've done a few laps in the Carrera S and the Cayman GT4 last night and figured I'm way behind the faster cars.
It seems this concept can be pretty tricky. I lost a race and a car last Tuesday because of the incident with Mael. I don't see myself at fault at all. So writing off race two, then start from the back in race 3 would be punishment enough I'd think. However, this thing pretty much writes off 3 races the following week on top of that...just for being in the way of someone. This is not about nagging at Mael...I'm over this, no probs at all. I fucked up Able's race myself after that...things can go wrong...that's just the nature of racing.
In this particular case in a proper competitive season it can be pretty demoralising though...5 races messed up because of someone else's mistake.
Just an opinion. I understand this is all about testing this out.

I crashed into nobody and I still can only afford a Carrera S or a Cayman Gt4. And I even tried to keep driving the normal cayman for two rounds to "make" some money. I am not sure I see what is demoralising you.

That's because even in the cheaper cars, you've still managed to sit in 3rd place in the season standings, so you don't "need" a faster car. Similarly, killagorilla is only 3 pts further back in 5th, so has been doing well in the Carrera.

Don't forget, a real season would be longer than just 4 rounds too, so there's more time for things to even out and for strategies to play out.

I am leaning towards having an entry fee each round too, which will have the effect of slowly making people lose their fast cars if they keep winning in them. Lower placed drivers will still make a profit and be able to afford faster cars, but the top place getters will slowly go backwards in the money stakes if they keep winning.

Hm, ok, I thought the wrecked car prevents me from getting a faster one at Monza just because my overall performance last Tuesday was rather poor. If that's not the case I must have simply misjudged the situation.

Ehm...., I know, Wally. I was... sarcastic, I guess.

Killa: basically---the poorer your performance, the better the car you get.

PS: monza is tough if your car is so obviously slower :(

I could have purchased the Cayman as well, but as I didn't have time to to prepare I went for the Carrera S again. At least I've got a setup for this one.
It's a great car. Turns in very well and oversteer is nicely controllable.
So, considering I had just this one our of practise before the race I'm pretty happy with the way it went. Good to be faster than Wally for a change :-)
Cheers

Fun if at times a bit lonely race. For race 1 I just concentrated to get consistent pace and a good result for a change, helped by Bird having gotten a case of Bird-flu  :P.

Race 2 it quickly became apparent that Bird meant business and there was no way of competing with him, waited for AB who got delayed at the start by Killa to have a good race.

Race 3  went for an alternative strategy to keep it interesting, with only two 911 R's in the field it can be a bit lonely. An early start combined with a pit drive through should be close with Monza''s short pitlane. I was also hoping Killa would get ahead of AB again to delay him and make it a close race. However AB got away clean while I lost about 3 seconds in the first two laps through over-driving on cold tires. (The first lap's time is a bit weird since the clock only start when the lights go out, a false PB in my case). Luckily for me Ab touched the grass on the last lap while going for a PB laptime otherwise I would not have caught up with him! Again the Bird drove without fault for a good win, your laptime consistency in race 2 and three was impressive Bird!

ps. The loneliest award in race 2 for me can't be right? The gap between me and AB was always close.

Yeah, that looks a bit odd, doesn't it. Loneliest looks at your total gap, front and back, and you had a big gap to Bird in front. I should change it to be the driver who's furthest away from any car.
My race 3 was made difficult by missing the start while watching Mael drive off into the sunset. I was about second last, but then spent some laps battling grat and Freezer. Freezer and I had an interesting race, with some drafting and a few passes (including one when I nearly spun on that damn Lesmo 2 outer kerb).

Hi Wally: question---strictly only for curiosity. Doesn't the cut penalty kick in at the 4th cut? I have 3 cuts and a penalty in race 3.

The first race was fun, even if I've fecked up every time I went past AB (apart from the original effup).
The second was fun because I've got a pb and finally won a race.
The third was much like the second - I was half thinking of going from the back, but thought you guys may not appreciate me waving through the field...

I gotta say, it's still nicer to be alone at the front than at the back :D

Also: the GT3RS is a very nice & easy car to drive, all the spins were solely my fault.  In better hands, I'm pretty sure it could fly a few seconds faster.

Yes. I was running around on 3 warnings in one race, for example. I noticed your penalty came up very late in the race. Maybe the last cut was after the race finished? I'll have to check the server log file.

Yes, I think you got the 4th cut (and hence the penalty) after the race end. It's not supposed to do that... I'll have to investigate.

What do you want, one extra point and less cash, or take the cash? :)

Ahahahah. It does not matter, I guess. I mean: I have not checked whether I am close to be able to buy a better car, as it all depends on that...

But yes, I confirm that I did cut the chicane in the cool-down lap. I'll try not to do it in the future to avoid this issue.
