Racing general / Tazio Nuvolari’s last car up for sale...
« on: September 28, 2013, 10:57:13 AM »

Quote
Tazio Nuvolari’s prewar racing exploits are the stuff of legend, and Ferdinand Porsche himself once remarked that the Italian was “the greatest driver of the past, the present and the future.” Following the conclusion of the Second World War, Nuvolari, then in his mid-50s, returned to compete in the occasional race, but he was no longer the dominant force he’d been in his youth. His final race, behind the wheel of a 1950 Cisitalia Abarth 204 A Spyder Sport, saw him finish first in class at the 1950 Palermo-Montepellegrino Hillclimb. Now, for the first time since 1978, Nuvolari’s last race car will be offered for sale at auction.

Already significant as the final chapter for Cisitalia and the beginning chapter for Abarth, the 204 A Spyder Sport is an important piece of racing history. Chassis 04, fitted with 1.1-liter engine 014-1090, is well-documented as the car Nuvolari drove in his final race, and has been in the possession of an Argentinean collector for 35 years. Restored in 2010, the car comes complete with the same footrest used by Nuvolari at the Montepellegrino Hillclimb, as well as the original cork-wrapped steering wheel, the latter no longer fitted to the car to preserve its condition. In 2012, the car was awarded the Premio Speciale FIVA (for the most historically significant car) at the Mille Miglia, and was later displayed at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

Chassis 04 was built by Cisitalia in 1948, then modified by Abarth in April of 1949 (at which time it was also given an Abarth chassis number, 08) and titled as a 1950 Abarth. Upgraded with twin Weber carburetors, the single-cam engine was said to make as much as 80 horsepower, more than enough to make the tube-frame racer competitive in its class. Part of the Squadra Carlo Abarth team, the 204 A Spyder Sport was first raced at the 1950 Giro di Sicilia/Targa Florio, where Nuvolari retired early in the race with a broken gearbox. Its next outing was the Palermo-Montepellegrino Hillclimb, where Nuvolari drove to an in-class victory (and fifth overall) in his final race. Though he never officially retired, Nuvolari never again drove competitively and died of a stroke in 1953

Elephants on parade:
Street Hemis featured at Hemmings Concours d’Elegance

Quote
It was one of the most feared engines to come out of Detroit, a legend in its own time, and has served as the basis for more drag strip records and bouts of auction fever than perhaps any other V-8. The Street Hemi proved that sometimes size does matter, and this weekend the seventh annual Hemmings Concours d’Elegance will feature cars powered by the storied elephant engine.

Chrysler Corporation’s foray into the realm of performance engines dates back to 1951 when the company released the 331.1-cu.in. V-8, which also happened to be the first V-8 developed by their engineers. It was unique right from the start, employing hemispherical combustion chambers, free-flowing intake and exhaust ports, and sizable corresponding valves linked to dual rocker arm shafts atop each cylinder head. Called the “Fire Power V-8,” they were impressively powerful in both production vehicles and, in the mid-Fifties, between the wheel wells of specially-prepared Chryslers competing in NASCAR races across the country. Unfortunately, they were also complex and expensive to manufacture, leading Chrysler engineers to release the polyspherical “semi-hemis” later in the decade. By 1959, the first generation of Hemi engines had vanished from dealer literature, but not for long.

Intense competition in NHRA and NASCAR races, which in turn spurred showroom sales, prompted the parent company to reexamine the Hemi in the early Sixties. Born into this ring of high-horsepower fire was the “Max Wedge” 426-cu.in. Hemi, complete with a cross-ram intake and dual four-barrel carburetors. This boded well for quarter-mile conquistadors; however, NASCAR rules adopted in the late Fifties prevented multiple carburetors, supercharging and fuel injection. In short, the Max Wedge with a single four-barrel was no match against Pontiac’s circle track dominance.

Mother Mopar’s solution was a freshly designed intake manifold and corresponding deep-breathing hemispherical cylinder heads. The new Hemi made its debut at the 1964 running of the Daytona 500. Richard Petty dominated the event in his Plymouth, while his Mopar brethren claimed second, third and fifth places. During the NASCAR season, the Hemi would claim 26 Grand National (now Spring Sprint Cup) victories. The only catch was that NASCAR claimed the engine was not “stock,” meaning available to the general public, so the Hemi – and Ford’s SOHC 427 – were banned from 1965 NASCAR races until an agreement was eventually reached between Chrysler and NASCAR late in the season (Richard Petty and the Hemi engine did compete late in the 1965 NASCAR season). Part of that agreement was making the engine available in street-legal production vehicles beginning with the 1966 model year.

I have a very fond spot for these cars and had noticed the "enhancement" but just posted for the cars' celebration.

Certainly a determined start by the guy!

netKar PRO / Re: Well Hello

...I am guessing NetKar Pro was in between seasons and Wally is swaning around some where with no access.
Nah, we're in the middle of a series.
BUT, Wally had scheduled a rest week for this week, so I think he knew that someting was gonna happen to the forums!!!!!! ::) :P

We were hacked..... again.
So we have decided on another option for forum software  8) and it seems to be doing a great job with spam bots.

good quick works, thanks.
ok so let's see how deep we can go with quotes...

Are we there yet..
farkennel, if it isn't unlimited... :-X
So what's this about then?
What's what about.
What's what's what about?
What you talking about Willis!
Look deep into the quote, you are feeling sleepy....
:o
 ;D Found you

I command you to stop this nonsense! :D
What nonsense?
It was you, after all Bird, who said 'lets see how deep we can go with the quotes' ;D ;D
A wise man can see the folly of his ways!  And occasionally even I can! :D
My obsessive compulsive disorder has made me type this message to balance all the little blue section in the clusterphuck quote box. In order for one to achieve such greatness you first must crap on about nothing and anything to make the blue section bigger then normal, if you are still reading this I feel you maybe care enough to be able to help, If you quote this message it will then be complete. PS..... Beware, I am prepared to quote myself in order to complete the madness.
Now a "No Comment" comment!

Convert the string length to HEX and check the ASCII chart, you will see what I want to do!  :o

Yeah, I'm happy with everything.
The cockpit really helps being a solid unit, as it allows me to exert enough pressure for the load-cell brake without anything moving.
I've had to modify the monitor stand a bit, to take the extra load of the three monitors, but it's well over-engineered so no issues there.
In fact, it's solid enough for the vibrations from my Buttkicker to interfere with the wheel's FFB, so the BK's on the shelf ATM.

a high paying job!  ;D
