Title: Best wishes to Flattop
Post by: Wally on September 18, 2017, 07:55:47 PM
Hi Bruce,

I started this thread to give everyone here at XGN an opportunity to send you messages of best wishes and support.

For myself, I find you an inspirational member here who always has a positive, "have fun" attitude in all of the many years that you and I have raced together (and you're quite hard to pass!). You're always proud of your achievements when you do well, which shows the fun you're having. You're a true gentleman racer. And you have put your hand in to organise many series and get involved. You're a real asset to XGN, and a great part of the place.

- Wally

Hey Bruce, what Wally said.

You certainly are an inspiration for all us old guys. Keep fighting mate, take care of yourself and get well soon.

I know you will be racing with us again soon. Although you have picked up some pace of late on Thursdays I will still get lonely at the back of the pack without someone to chase.

God Bless mate.

They have tests running, but as it appears slight they are not concerned, my oncologist has had one patient in all his experience.

Looking forward to seeing you back on the virtual track again Bruce, and pulling off another inspired drive, like the one that got you your last win in the Alfa. If you could do that in the Corvette  even Phil could not catch you!! I am missing the teamspeak anecdotes  like what "Lotus" actually stands for, luckily I never had enough money to buy one , I always thought they were super reliable :-[

love the Lotus, Fiat, Ford etc meanings. and I can usually find and anecdote, Denise says "your full of it",  I'm sure that is a compliment! :)
Home now, finished radiotherapy yesterday, thank goodness.  We, (and I say we, it takes a lot of the family too), have a couple of weeks rest and then on to chemo.  They are still looking after me, that good.
The hospital food was okay, although I was eating meagrely,  much nicer a

The car has perked me up mentally and although having missed meeting up with Denis and Phil at Baskerville, I am going to renew my race licence and we now plan to run at the Historics meeting at Sandown early November.

Hey Bruce I'd like to add my best wishes!

I like to believe that our minds are our strongest weapon; as long as we believe in ourselves, and not believe any negative prediction from doctors, we can prevail.  There are numerous examples of such things happening, so I wish you a lot of mental strength, too, that'll certainly help pull you through.  The Car project is an excellent way of it!

Apologies if I sound presumptuous, feel free to just feel well and disregard my babbling! ;)

Istvan I know your not babbling and your intentions are honest and appreciated.  My mental attitudes is one of the ways that I have made it here along with the support and positive thoughts and love from my family and friends. The doctors are one method, my positiveness is another parallel path.
Thank you,

Now that I have a little more energy today and finally logging onto to XGN, your kind words deserve more than a a mere "Thankyou", even though at the time, that was the best  could do.
It has many moments, far in the majority, that given me a lot satisfaction. enjoyment and entertainment, (on many levels :) ), and apply myself to being a part of the XGN  community has truly been a pleasure.
You may have guessed, I don't give in to easily and doing a little cardiac work on the site when needed, down to trying new mods in an attempt to keep the interest up, (just like your sex life :) ), has had its rewards.
As in real life, so is my "cyberlife", Ill give it 100%, on occasions it works, and mu 100% equals the others.
I know I am the better for being part of XGN, this thread this concern proves it,
Thank you Wally and all.

Rob I believe we all inspire each other here, we have a common cause, there is no animosity, small tiffs are sorted out quickly and we move on as a group of friends should.
There will plenty race opportunities for you and I  :)

Many thanks Glen, kind words.  I have felt that, it is one of the nice parts of a common interest and common philosophy of life I expect.
When ever you make your appearance on track, and we say "hi", (usually it is the first overtake of me in prac :) ), is is as natural as meeting someone on the street.
Looking forward to more races too... (may need assistance again in the GT3 class  ::) )

So where am in terms of health?  You will have noticed that we missed our long term plan due to my health suddenly dropping off.
I have now in palliative care, at home fortunately. So parallel to managing the pain as the cancer seems to be winning at the moment, I am now having chemo.  Although this has had a 10% success rate with skin melanoma metastasis, it hasn't been used against mucosal  melanoma.
We have have a fingers crossed, taking a positive approach to this opportunity!
In between when I have the energy, and after the chemo gives me a break... LOOK OUT, I'm coming through!  ;D

PS I have no inhibitions to speak my mind or heart here, thank you.

Looking forward to seeing you back on track for the AC Legends series Bruce, the Can Am series  is not as popular as I had hoped, but even some very experienced sim racers have had trouble coming to terms these monsters! To me it was an opportunity to relive what it was like to drive these cars, at the tracks, as it happened in 1966, and to finish the season ,Seanus has even come up with a version of Stardust Raceway   :) . This is what historic racing means to me( and I am sure you feel the same)  I am not simracing but reliving history.

Please accept my apologies Bruce for not posting in here sooner. Lately I have gotten used to just clicking on the Thursday fun night link only.

I'm very sorry to hear of Your ongoing health problems. I think I first raced with You here about 10 years ago for the 5th season of GT Legends, in the
B series if I remember correctly.
As many have said, You are indeed a true Gentleman and certainly a Legend here at XGN, as well as a few other places we raced at.
Thanks for the immense effort You have put in here over the years, managing racing seasons, and for being a great person to race alongside.
I sincerely hope You manage to pull through and get over this health hurdle.
You certainly sum up the saying "it's not winning that counts, but how You play the game" and I do remember You getting some wins as well.

Last of the late brakers

Imperious.

I'll miss Bruce a lot. He was one of the core group of XGNers who made me feel welcome and comfortable joining in the XGN online racing community. He had the uncanny knack of remembering everyone's name - not just their racing nicknames but also their real names. It seemed to come naturally to him. He was the creator of XGN Thursday night racing and introduced, or should I say imposed, the Cobra on us thereby setting up the lasting legacy of Thursday night "historic" racing. I worked with him on some of the early seasons of Thursday night racing and he was extremely easy and enjoyable to collaborate with. He had the knack for creating car/track season combinations.

I would love to have a Cobra Cup for next season to remember Bruce's contribution.

I was thinking the same, when the time is closer to a new season next year I will make a post asking what were some of Bruce's favourite tracks from way back when he first started his online career.

I will miss Bruce also, like Gratulin said he made me feel welcome, Could not find someone more easy to get along with and kind, I loved his knowledge of old cars, and his little storeys, some had me laughing my head off, Lotus, Lots Of Trouble, Usually Serious :)  learnt a lot from Bruce,  it was a privilege to get to know him.

For many years we've known each other, raced together, and he was indeed the "top bloke", the best gentleman you can ask for, both on the track and off it.

My suggestion is, since the Pat Phillips cup is about full, we start a new one in memory of Bruce.

For all the time I have been simracing  Flattop has been there as well, we shared a passion and affinity for all things historic. Historic Thursdays exists because of Bruce his patience had no bounds to keep things going on Thursday nights, often at the expense of his own enjoyment. He new how to make any newcomer feel welcome and if you happen to eventually win he would make that special as well. That is why we have so many people  who are proud to be part of the xgn family. I always expected to see out my simracing days with Bruce along for the ride as well. Rest in Peace Bruce it was a pleasure and priveledge to race with you
I would like to propose we now call Thursday Fun Nights, Flattop Thursdays as a permanent memorial.

Going to miss him greatly.

I dont even no were to start
This man was and always will be a Legend of XGN
Bruce would go out of his way to welcome and help new racers as much as he could never had a bad word about people and just loved to race .. im sure if someone made a FG /FX holden mod we would have race that every season ;)
It was always a pleasure to paint him up a car for a new season.
Was good to chat on Teamspeak u always got that cheerful "Evening guys how r we all " or "Great nights racing guys see ya next week "
Having raced with Flatty over so many years here i was devastated when Glen sent me a message on saturday about Bruce's passing
Even thou i havent raced here for awhile ive stayed intouch with Bruce thou facebook and reading some posts on his facebook page everyone had the same opinion of him a true gentleman a great friend and love life & people
So with great sadness i say goodbye old friend  its been a appsaulte pleasure both off and on the track
Rest peacefully FLATTOP 13#

Hello All,
We're using this account to pass on information about Bruce (written by his family - Denise, Edwina and Jean) - so please don't freak-out when you get this message...
Bruce unfortunately lost his battle with cancer on Saturday 9th December 2017. He was incredibly strong and determined to beat the illness, but it was just too much. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends in the final weeks.
We will be celebrating his incredible life on Thursday 14th December 2017 at 12-noon at Bunurong Memorial Park, 790 Frankston-Dandenong Road, Dandenong South 3175.
Thank you to all for your love and support.

Thank you very much for letting us know, Bruce was an amazing man and has had an impact on all of us here in someway, be it his generosity or his ability to make folks feel welcome, My sincerest condolence to Denise, Edwina and Jean.
I will be there in spirit.

Shit, shit shit.  I haven't checked the forums for a bit so was absolutely shocked to hear this devastating news.  Last I heard Bruce was taking time out to deal with it all but was still in good spirits.

I'm still shocked with a tear in my eye and have to say that I echo everyone else's comments about him being a genuinely welcoming, warm, humorous, and all-round decent person.  I'll always remember talking to Bruce when I first started, him having a laugh at some of the twisted rubbish I came up with I'm sure just to make me feel welcome to XGN.  He was always a gentlemen on track and was generous in how he behaved toward others (even when getting cut-off or ran into).  Also a great person to chat with when the servers went down.  I'm just regretful that I wasn't around for the last few seasons with him.

What a tremendous loss to the sim racing community, but I'm sure nothing compared to what his family and "real life" friends must be going through given the type of bloke he was.  I still can't believe it, but I guess the best one's are taken to a better place.  I'm sure the bugger is setup with a giant motion rig and 10 foot OLED screen playing AC on a super computer as we speak!

RIP Bruce.  Forever immortalised here at XGN by equally great people.

I as well haven't been on the website for a few days, just logged on the server and saw it had been renamed. I knew what that meant straight away.

RIP Bruce (Flattop). I first raced with Bruce here all the way back in 2007. I can only echo what others have said.
Like many I never met Him in real life but know He was a true Gentleman. I will miss Him here as will
everyone else.  My Thoughts and Prayers are with His Family.

The news of Bruce's passing has made me incredibly sad. I only knew him through the brief intercourse of Tuesday race nights, and from reading his posts, but I feel as though I've lost a great friend, such was Bruce's personality and presence. RIP Flattop, the nicest bloke I've raced with.

A wonderful service, a lot of people all sad to say goodbye. Good to see so many people support his family just by being there in such a hard time.
Here's a few photo's of Bruce, the last two he quickly became involved with the Mentone Life Saving Club, involving all his grand children to little nippers and also extending his knowledge to their boats. They even named a boat after him!

Thankyou for the lovely photos Glen, Thursday nights will not be the same without Flattop, as GW said, when you heard Bruce's voice over Teamspeak, you felt that little bit happier. We are all going to miss him.

Well its Christmas eve and I was about to go to bed when I thought of Flattop and thought I would post him a message.  Sadly then I read here to find
that I am to late.....
Stunned and lost for words...
I have raced with Bruce for many many years and held him in the highest regard despite never having actually met!
A thorough gentleman who like many here I will very sadly miss.
RIP Bruce.

Thanks Freezer, his voice also is still clear in my head. Every time a great new historic mod is released I always think of how much joy it would have given Bruce.

With tears and a heavy heart as I type, our mate Bruce passed peacefully this morning, a beautiful man who never put his own illness in front of anyone's well being. Never complained and was always there to help anyway possible.

Finally you get to rest, for ever your mate, Glen.

RIP Mate

Before he got sick we were working on a car of mine one time and the exhaust was off, he said it is absolutely compulsory to start the motor with no exhaust, just headers.

I didn't argue with him at all and eagerly started it up, the excited cheeky smile he got staring at the motor while your ears bleed.

When ever I take a exhaust off a car or a bike I start the engine, give it a rev or two and think him.
