Hardware & Reviews / Re: THE Oculus Rift Thread

Those who hate facebook will soon have an alternative. We just need to convince Kunos to support the steamvr api instead of the oculus one. Resolution is a bit disappointing though.

Valve and HTC have partnered to produce a VR headset called the HTC Vive

http://www.htcvr.com/

Dual 1200x1080 screens with 90Hz refresh rate. Consumer release at the end of this year.

"A gyrosensor, accelerometer, and laser position sensor combine to precisely track the rotation of your head on both axes to an accuracy of 1/10th of a degree, allowing you to look around the virtual environment naturally. Couple the headset with a pair of Steam VR base stations to track your physical location (in spaces up to 15 feet by 15 feet) – get up and walk around inisde the virtual world!"

It might be a serious angle, but it's damn sexy 8)

I hope they see ours in good humour, as intended. There are a lot of stiff shirts out there who are frightened and angry at the absurd..
Have you seen the name of our forum? :)

Cobras vs Robins sounds good. We've made a few modifications though, I'm sure you guys won't mind  ;D

The lenses in the rift mean your eyes are focused at "infinity", which puts them in their relaxed state. You don't feel like you're trying to view a close screen.

I think what Guybrush was thinking of is convergence which gives the 3D effect. For you to see an object clearly both your eyes need to be looking at the same part of the image, so they angle inwards more for near objects. That tricks the brain into seeing 3D even though the whole scene is in focus and your eye focus doesn't change.

I've used it for hours at a time without issue, but you can get eye strain if it's not set up right. If the IPD is set too wide or too narrow your eyes will be trying to hold a position further apart or closer together than normal which strains the muscles.

Assetto Corsa / Re: H-Shifter Speed Boost
« on: October 27, 2014, 02:06:57 PM »
BenC always found the shifter/clutch faster but I found it the same. I haven't tried comparing with recent versions though. I did try driving the x-bow with a shifter when 1.0-rc first came out and destroyed the gearbox in about 2 laps. They seem to have tightened up the timing a bit because I was grinding gears all over the place.

In the Lada mod you get a massive speed boost when shifting to 4th gear with a shifter. It seems to sit at high revs for a second or so before dropping down. Wonder if something like that is going on with all shifts to some degree.

Haven't tried any 3d movies yet, just a couple of the 3d youtube videos. I'll have to give a proper movie a go. I've watched some tv shows on it (SAO for maximum nerdage), but the resolution still isn't high enough for me to want to watch movies in it.

New rift driver came out which has made iRacing super smooth. Wish Kunos would hurry up and get theirs working fully.

I've probably only done 10 laps on a standard monitor in 2014 so 99% is pretty accurate :)

Darren, do you feel that it is pretty much guaranteed that the current fastest driver will win? In our league Guybrush will win and Marty will come second by .451sec nearly every race left to their own devices - ie not taken out by us or each other ;)
They have the highest probability, but it's certainly not guaranteed. In one of the races myself and team mate Luke McLean qualified a fair bit faster than everyone else. We both crashed out in a ditch 4 corners into the first lap :)

That's not the point though. The idea is to try to make it a true team event by giving everyone in the field something to race for and without putting emphasis on the few quickest drivers.

iRacing's club points work in a similar way. On there you get a point for every member of another club that you finish ahead of.

I did this sort of event in GPL with another league. We had a points table giving 1 point per place. 25 for 1st, 24 for 2nd etc. Highest points for the team won. That way everyone has to pull their weight :)

DK2 is awesome, AC DK2's support is currently not. It's still barely implemented and currently unusable for any serious driving. Shows the potential though as they seem to have at least done the warping properly this time.

They put the laptime in the DK1 support to make up for the lack of UI/app support. It used to show your gear as well.

While the panel is 1080p games need to render at a higher resolution before applying the lens correction warp so that it stays sharp. They render at something more like 1440p. With iRacing's DK1 support they rendered at 1600x1200 for the 1280x800 display.

In AC at the moment I get about 110fps in rift mode vs 210 in single monitor @ 1080p which is pretty poor optimization. In LFS it's 130 vs 190. iRacing had optimized their rift support better so I think it'll be even less difference there.

With AC's support being so poor and their devs seemingly having no interest in doing it properly I suspect I'll be going back to iracing for the bulk of my racing for the next few months at least. Virtual desktop with AC only gives 1/2 the experience.

I think DK1 had about 1/4 the needed resolution. DK2 has about 1/2. If they can do 4k for the first consumer release it should be great. A 4k panel doesn't mean you have to run the game at 4k though.

What does Darren count, though? :)

Shit, I'll probably have to start doing some practice, then...it won't do to rock up and learn the combo on the night.

Darren's definitely XGN, as are you :)

Hate to disappoint you but I've been an ARSE man for too long to change my ways now :)

Interesting, and it'd be also sad if you'd leave.

What I don't understand: how is it that you see less from the same viewpoint on the monitor compared to the rift?  You're on the same "eye level" aren't you?  Or is it just the fov?  And why the low resolution?  I'm a bit confused...
Don't be sad. It's only a temporary hiatus :)

I meant 640x480 single monitor mode to simulate the view in the rift. The rift panel is 1280x800 and you see less than 1/2 that per eye, so 640x480 is still higher res than the rift. The issue currently is that AA isn't working, so it's just a mass of large pixels and you can't pick out markers until you're very close to them.

There are options for me to improve it a little, but they're a huge pain in the butt to use with AC so I'd rather just take a break at the moment.

I've been trying for a week since they broke it, but it's just crap. I did a monza race in the 458 on Tuesday and was able to get around, but it was uncomfortable after a while. Hopefully I'll have a DK2 in a week or 2 and a patch to support it, then I'll be back in action :)

As an experiment I tried 640x480 with no AA, no AF, 60 fov. It's pretty close to what I'm dealing with so maybe if you all agree to drive with those settings I'll give it a go  :P

With the camera up high I can see corners a little better but it feels like I'm driving a gokart or something lol.

I'm going to have to withdraw from this series :(

Rift support is screwed up at the moment and with this car being low to the ground it's just too hard to see where I'm going. I tried going back to the monitor but after 6 months using the rift it just looks and feels completely wrong.

If it gets fixed I'll sign up to the reserves list but for now I'll probably go back to iracing for a while.
