I was talking to Marty on the server last night and complaining how slow my internet speed is everytime my kids are on netflix or browsing the net in general.To circumnavigate this i am force to disco the wifi so that i can enjoy some sort of ....speed.
Now Marty was pointing me out about QOS,i heard of this about prioritizing certain services through the modem so that eventhough everybody is using wifi i can still enjoy few laps without hassles.
I tried a bit and search last night but i am farmer and i have brain limitation :o,is anyone out there that can help with this?
I got a billion NL modem and the download speed when my 2 daughters and my boy are away from home is 450 mbps and the upload is 0.80 mbps,we live is semirural aerea and the phone exchange is 7 km away,so i am not expecting the moon but it would be nice if i can stop switching off and on the wifi in order to download.....porn,,,not joking ,,in order to enjoy few laps with friends through the bloody week
I understand that this can be a pain,and sometimes you can`t get results but if any of you has some sort of knowledge about it,it would be appreciated... let me know who can be............HHHAAAAA maybe Istvan can help lololololol

I'm actually not the best to ask on Qos. I recall we had a thread on it, or at least a thread containing information by those who actively use it...

I guess your downstream is 4.5Mbit and not 450Mbit? Still, seems like a decent enough connection to me that you shouldn't be getting spikes that bad just when somebody uses Netflix. 0.8Mbit upstream isn't a huge amount, and in my experience ping spikes was high as you were getting last night into the 700s are usually due to uploads and maxing out your upstream.
Do you have anything that is uploading. Could be DropBox or OneDrive or anything like that, syncing photos or files, I guess even iCloud. Anything that's going to automatically sync and max out your upstream would give you that kind of grief.

yes joe it is 4.5 mbit,but i do not think any of icloud OneDrive or dropbox are doing anything...but thx for the help

Upgrade! I've got 100/40 and I can't feel netflix :D
Have you checked how much Neflix saturates your bandwidth? You can lower the quality for them in your netflix account (from a computer only, afaik) if it's a bandwidth problem. They don't need to watch cartoons in full HD :)
But I don't think your problem is the bandwidth.
Try this speedtest. It test for something called bufferbloat, which is a sortof latency-under-load measure. If it's high, that's your problem.

It maybe that simply your router cannot handle it.

QoS is a good option to consider. Just be aware that there's plenty of home routers that don't do it very well or really at all. Even the ones that state it's a configurable option.
I have a ADSL2+ router here (Netgear DGND4000) and it does absolutely nothing to stop a low priority node from using all the bandwidth even if it's competing against a high priority node.
Streaming video is quite taxing on how shit the average Australian internet connection is. You said you only sync at 3.5Mbps. Well my adsl2+ connection usually gets 20Mbps and streaming video can most certainly bring it to a halt. But the biggest killer to my bandwidth here for me is Steam, by quite a margin. Steam can max out your downstream instantly and keep it maxed until it's done with it's update or new install. Only really relevant if you have another user on the network that uses Steam.
Don't know what version of Windows you use but I'm pretty sure I remember hearing something about the user documents folder being uploaded on Windows 10 if you use a Microsoft account as your login. I wouldn't use a Microsoft account anyway, and would recommend using a standard login account if you don't already.

Yeah that would be OneDrive. With a Microsoft account used it's automatically set up to sync your documents folder. It also likes to do a lot of background downloading. I had to edit the registry to tell it my ethernet connection was metered to stop it.

you r happy about you net speed HA Bird???? well......vaffanculo!!!!!!!!!! Cant upgrade Istvan,,,upgrade to what? we live on a farm i have no chances to upgrade to anything,i tried and ask and they told me that i can consider myself lucky to have what i have >:(

...and thats my problem,i can have my boy playing battlefield bloody one on his PS4,my 2 daughter on netflix(22 and 20 years old cant wait when they leave home????) and my old girl facebooking on her mobile,,,soooo at the speed i got i have no chances but disable the wifi,listen to the bloody family carry on,,,bla bla bla if i want to race....i am speewing ???

Having said that, you can see on your results that your bufferbloat is pretty bad, especially during uploads.
I'm not sure how bad it is compared to other ADSL lines, as from what I read this is somewhat of an ISP-level problem.
But if more here on ADSL complete the test we may have something to work with.

Ok guys listen to this.It goes without saying that the internet speed at home is not going to improve any time soon,but...but...i have another pc that my old girl uses for her accounting annnnnd one more telephone wall socket that nobody uses,annnnnd one more modem(brand new) that nobody uses.SSSSSSOOOOOOOO what about if i cut wifi on my modem and organize another network with the wifes pc and the other modem connected to the other wall socket........yes...yes i can!!!! :o ;D ;D ;D
what do you think Istvan?

Simone, if that other line runs separately to the exchange, it's a good idea. If it's on the same copper pair, forget it, you'll just tax the copper even more so you'll get two half-arsed connections. You can ask telstra for another copper pair, but they'll ask for your farm and the lives of your children in exchange I reckon.
If you have telstra 3G/4g reception, a good alternative maybe to get one of those telstra wireless modem / wifi hotspot devices, buy some pre-paid data and either put the family on it during race hours, or use it yourself.
The big catch:
pings are usually crap on these devices, and data is expensive. So you won't be too happy if you use it, and they'll chew through a lot of money watching videos on it. Sadly.

Too many wall sockets in the house is no good for ADSL even with filters.
1. Disconnect all other sockets ie rewire so that the only copper into your house terminates at the one socket. Make sure it is a modern connector (not old big plastic one). This should increase your ADSL speed. No guaranteed and not by much.
2. As you suggest, turn off wifi on your main router. However, just connect your spare router to the bullion main router using Ethernet and run the house wifi off that. Your PC is then on a single Ethernet port and the rest of the house is on another Ethernet port. This means that you will get a better shot at the latency in the router and on the ADSL. Think of it as one packet from you then one packet from ALL of them etc.

Yes the copper run straight to the modem,telstra guy fitted the box for me 2 years ago promising me a better speed,,,,but no it did not make any difference,but i like your idea i will give it a go
