Is that the mighty Trabi!! Now the symbol of the old East Germany!! You owned what has become legendary!!
Trabant 601 indeed. Legendary...I don't really think so. It has definitely fallen apart tho. The shock mounts - that doubled as engine mounts I think - have rotted away on the cabin side. What I've experienced was that my steering wheel moved in a good 5-8cm's in at every braking...The mechanic said I would've almost certainly lost my tyres and engine pretty soon.
But I've also owned a 1.1 version, later, for a little while. That was a death trap...same light car with a 1.1 WV polo engine.
Just so you guys know, the doors were made of fiberboard (the shittiest, weakest sort), a lot of things were either paper-thin steel or plastic...The whole thing weighed some 650kgs iirc. Hence the 26HP 600cc 2-cylinder 2 stroke engine worked well to propel this marvel of engineering at up to 100km/h in good tailwind.
Tyres were so thin they were practically bike tyres (some current bikes have wider tyres that's for sure).
Good times.
