Hardware & Reviews / Re: RTX 2080 review
« on: September 22, 2018, 01:07:00 PM »
I think the issue is that there is virtually nothing that has been optimised for these news cards from the ground up.  Personally, I don't care too much for ray tracing.  I want to see pure grunt that will propel me through AC at 90 FPS using 180 degree 8K VR.

Well, one o/c 1080Ti (eg mine is a Zotac Amp extreme) can do very well on one 4k screen, but 8k ... you probably need 2x something beefy in any case, maybe even 3x since performance does not scale linear with multiple cards.
But it might just be possible that some sort of o/c 2080 founders could get you there.

Here are all the reviews you can gorge on:
https://www.overclockers.com.au/news.php?id=1252557

Especially if you're like me and prefer reading at your own pace, rather than listening to the slomo review :)

What I find great is the ray-tracing performance. Check this out for a jaw to the floor:
( from the article: https://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_rtx_2080_founders_review,15.html )

This demo was real-time presented & recorded here (in 4k).   And previously it was rendered - quote from the article - "to achieve film quality at 1080p on 4 Tesla V100s, each with 16 GB of framebuffer"

But otherwise you can safely wait another generation IMO.

Geoff Crammonds GP3, GP4, NASCAR2003 (now iRacing), rFactor, nKPro, AC, that's my "league racing" history.
Throw in GPL, LFS, ARCA, nK Namie, F1 2015, pCars, rFactor2, ACC as other sims I've owned. 8)

When you write it down, I should really get a life...... :-[ :P

What, isn't *this* your life?  You got one, and one you like, no?  Quit complaining you big baby!

Speak for yourself.
For about a year I kept going back to nKP for my wet weather fix. 8)

Yeah, I could have kept driving nKPRO too

You guys are so old school  8) AC was the current sim when I started sim racing so it's pretty much all I've ever played.
That's not old skool not nearly.   Some of us started with LFS & GTL, 10+ years ago, and that's just online.   Hell, look at Indianapolis500 for a really old skool sim.

From the pictures in the article it looks like they've got serious distortion issues on that triple setup.   Can that be dialled out I wonder...?

Any time I take pictures like that of my setup it looks like things don't line up or are distorted. It's because all the settings pumped into the AC triples app is based on my seating position so when I'm sat in my rig it looks perfect  8)

Ah ok.  In the past when I used triples, it was a real problem for me.  I haven't ever managed to get it right.

That is a not bad price either,  never really seen a curved one up close and wonder how 3 would be together

Edit

looked up some pic and looks awesome

That bad perspectivic distortion was always one of my main gripes with this setup, btw.   The other is the bezels.  :)

VR only has to get a bit better (and cheaper) to outperform my triples.
Reason: a cockpit, lounge suite, bookshelves, TV and entire kitchen squeezed into a 4m x 6m space is quite difficult.
VR would save a shit load of space. :-X

yeah, there's that.

If it'd give me a virtual workspace as big as a wall, maybe I'd go for it, too.
I was thinking of a projector, but there's too much light in here among other things (and my office is about 3x3m).  But I can still accommodate a 50" monitor here when they come out :D

They look like a decent upgrade over current ones for sure, but for me until its like wearing a pair of sunglasses I am not going to wear something that big on my head for hours on end.  I tried the rift in a shop in town and found triple monitors was more normal to a real life view of looking out a car window

You'll be waiting for a while, I reckon.  :)  It'll probably never be like sunglasses, too many bits & pieces need to go into it (lenses & screens to start with) and it needs to block the outside out pretty well, too.

IMO 3 monitors will be better for a long while, yet.  (or one huge curved one for that matter)

awesome, thanks for the update!

If that thing is a central shock or spring, that's a very intersting way about it!

That was my issue, too, back then.  It kept going out of alignment, and thus been a distraction.

Since nVidia is sole market leader, it'll be a while for their prices to come down, especially on top class chips.
But the 1070's are nearly half price compared to the 1080...much better bang for buck if buck is scarce.

Things seem to be a bit over-estimated there...like 2x or so IMO.
Not all, but a lot.

56k modem? Shuddup.  Fast as.  14k is where the jizz is!   ;)
(that'd be early-to-mid-90's IIRC)

I've joined in - using the 'ysu' alias - via one of the online shooters (Brit might be able to recall what it was, my memory is rather flaky - FEAR maybe? It was somewhere mid-2000's) where I've been able to cause some headaches even to the professional XGN team :D
Back then Diggazz was already somewhat distant,  Brit was running the show, Lube helping out quite a bit.    Then I think we've started to do the GTL section, and that kicked off the racing division (small part to my excellent rental system I hope! ;) )  I've been running it for a while, then Wally took over.

In any case; It's interesting to hear about the early days, many thanks for the historical look-back!
I'll make this into a news item; this post deserves it!
