Title: Season 17 car poll - open wheelers
Post by: Wally on May 06, 2017, 08:56:30 AM
It will be a single-make series in the chosen cars (real open wheelers!), a 5 week season most likely starting May 23.

As usual, you can vote for more than one car.

I want to keep life simple... no comments about other cars to add to the mix please. This caters to the full spectrum of open wheeler types.

But I would like to hear what format you'd like - 1 hour races, two 30 min races, pitstops etc. My leaning would be towards a mix of both: 1hr races with a pit stop, mixed with 2 x 30 mins.

Lotus 72 is the last OW car we raced so even though I like it I wont vote for it again. If its been a whioe then maybe we need more OW seasons and not a fake prada product.  ;D

Format wise none of these cars had planned pit stops when they raced.

The exos was never raced but if stock it just has one hard compound slick. I would prefer races without forced stops if there was a modern f1 car then stops are the quicker way, if a race would be faster without a stop but you need to manage tyres. I think its better then having 30m races and 1hr races that are just split into 30 min stints.

In a 2 race format I would also prefer either 2x qualy or a reverse grid race 2, the current format of race one start order just makes it like the 1 hour 2x30 stints with a stop in the middle. Then a 1 hour race with stops makes all races pretty mich the same thing in both of those.

Any ideas with tracks? I guess some F1 circuits - but different to last season?

Yep, something suitable to the car, but I try to mix it up as well.

I've voted the 25 and the 49 simply because I struggle a lot with the others. With the 25 and 49 I still struggle but not quite as much  ;D

Yeah not a fan of 72d since it was the last ow season i went 98t since its a fairly interesting car to drive and something different

I prefer the 25 over the 49. It's a little more predictable than the 49, being less powerful. It's more like a little Skip Barber type of car. The 49 rear end can seem to get a mind of its own.

I reckon the 125 would be relatively similar to the Ferrari 138, which we tried but aborted. Maybe not quite as bad.

I did some trials with the Ferrari 138 and I have to say that Hockenheim was a particularly hard one, with less reference points... Barcelona felt very natural. I even did a pair of races with the AI and it was not too bad.

I wonder what will happen with the 98T... I fear some will complain that marty and kcender will give us 2 minutes any 10 laps and then ask for 50Kg of ballast... :(

At least now I am glad that such a crappy track was used for this weeks fun run, it has made plenty change their mind on the cars that were equal tops last week. If there is a fun run in the 98t on another crappy track maybe we can bring the Prada back for a second OW season.  ;D
Title: Re: Season 17 car poll - open wheelers
Post by: Wally on May 15, 2017, 10:28:11 PM
The cars were on 8 all, which the Lotus 25 is still on, and more people have voted now, presumably for the 98T as well as a couple of people changing from the 49 to the 98.

I personally don't find the track crappy. I like the flowing layout, designed for that era of car which are fun to throw through the long corners. Yes, it may be a bit bumpy in places, but I have a not that strong FFB, which probably makes it feel OK. The long version has more flowing corners instead of that old, straight shortcut, but finding a braking point for the end of the shortcut before the tight bend is a challenge.

45 mins from Brissy is the problem part.  It's rather far from anywhere I frequent.   Brit is nearby, have you met him?

But I'll try to make it happen...it shouldn't take much longer, I mean I've promised to turn up at some point ~10 years ago, what's the hurry? :D

In the meantime, if you come around the central coast, give me a holler ;)

So after this fun run there will be another in the exos.  ;D

I take it people havent driven it yet especially if its the stock with only hard tyres, the stig demanded softer tyres to run a lap in it as it doesnt work at all on slower tracks with cool temps.

It would be a fun challenge I think but not something I suspect would be any easier then the 98t. The original favourites have both lost votes so maybe the season will just never get started.  ;)

There will be a deadline eventually :)
I'll probably close the poll after tonight's race, on Wed night. Or you're right, we'll never start.

People can drive the Exos themselves if they want to see if it's vote worthy.

For the Lotus 98T, I had listed (late 80's F1): - 1 x 50 min race, no refuelling

Imola
Spa
Brands Hatch
Red Bull Ring
Monza

For Exos (GP2 style) - 1 x 30 min race with CPS (tyres), 1 x 20 min race no CPS, no refuelling

Red Bull Ring
Spa
Mugello
Imola
Zandvoort

And thanks to Phil, check this app out: http://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/acrl-drs.15414/

It adds the "DRS only when 1 second behind car in front at activation point" and "no DRS until lap 3" rule. It looks good.

Looks interesting, the app is a real chat spammer though lol it would be good if somehow that could be incorporated to plp even better if kunos just added it to the game officialy without needing to run such plugins. If an app can determine the drs rules youd think the code itself wouldnt be that hard inside the game.

I'll put up an XGN version which has our rules in it, and also see if I can strip out any chat spam we don't need. I only need something that says someone used DRS when they're not supposed to, so I can give a post-race time penalty.

Will need to try and persuade Stefano to consider it, he said a future update will have pit lane speed limits and next update will likely focus more on MP features. Main focus last one was on AI and he did some good stuff there so fingers crossed a big server side uodate next time around as AI isnt a major issue any more.

Perhaps multiplayer rules and penalties could come from the guys who did the custom championship stuff. That is pretty good except it doesn't support multiplayer. I also noticed that the Yellow Flags now work properly ie they now display only in the segment when the incident has occurred. Perhaps the same programmers will start adding more of the multiplayer rules etc.

I know it might not sound like it, but I don't mind either way. They're both great cars, I just think the 98T is more rewarding to drive.....on a good track. If there are chicanes we should race the Exos. I hate chicanes more than sedans.

My vote is for the 98T I am sure I know of a few pussies that voted for the exos but they wont ever admit it, some even cry about picking the boring/easy cars each season but I am sure most of them have voted the easiest car again this season.  ;)

Im fairly sure if I said I wanted the exos the 98T would have won, so in that didnt help but I doubt that the people that voted for it will put their name to the vote. Especially if the same guys then complain about the car during the season like they have the last few. Here is one that certainly voted for the exos.

yeah, fast of you have the time or inclination to practice in these, I have neither, its can be a fun car but to be honest its all a bit toxic lately and no fun anymore

Complained all last 3 seasons about the cars being boring and he and a few of his mates who in the past have said they only voted one way because its against my preference. Such as this example.

You also need to turn in way before you really think you should, and brake a lot sooner than you think you really should. As Phil said reminds me a lot of the Maserati GT4 in that regard which I didn't like much at the start (I only voted for is as Marty kept complaining how boring it was), but once I had a decent setup and some practice it was a lot better.

I don't know if you should take all those posts 100% seriously Marty.

I didnt write the posts, just quoted them. I dont see why they shouldn't be taken seriously as its a common tone from them against me yet I make the place toxic and am a troll. :)

I think this discussion is now pretty pointless. Wally offers lots of variety that should suit most people most of the time.

Let's get on with the season. I'm definitely looking forward to participating more this season. No matter what the car!!

Democracy has spoken, the voiceless minority have ruled with their ballots. Bring it on!

I voted for the 25 and 49 and thought they might get up, the 98T would of been fun also,  But the exos should be good fun racing

I thought the 25 might, but I'm happy. They were all good options to choose from.

I put up a practice server last night for the exos at Imola, I did a few laps offline earlier to make a basic setup then set server to the weather forecast 30c (30 +- 2c) sunny and 13kmh easterly wind. (This is set as 12-14 kmh Easterly with 15 degree variation)

That fairly light wind made quite a huge effect, it ended up as a headwind on the main straight. Compared to my first runs at rsr pro static conditions its amazing how much the wind played a factor. Its a little slower top speed but then all the corners into the wind have so much more downforce its like another car. Going back the other way on the other half of the track meant it had more speed but also less aero grip in to corners needing to brakea fair bit sooner.

Car is much more fun here then it was at old silverstone, not sure if the few extra degrees helped raise tyre temps and also give more grip but it felt quite good even at low gripwhen I ran in the server. I doubt the field will be that close at trickier more technical tracks like this, still would have been more fun in an old school car driving wise but should be a fun season anyway.

Its possible I may miss round 1, I will be away and fly back on tuesday and should be home just before the start but possibly not depending on traffic.
