Title: Classic Lotus Fun Run - May 16
Post by: Wally on May 09, 2017, 11:16:53 PM
We will be trying the Lotus 25 and the Lotus 49, at Rouen-Les-Essarts, a period-correct race track that held 4 French Grand Prix formula 1 races between 1952 and 1968. This will be a bit of a test of this mod track as well as the cars.

TRACK DOWNLOAD (http://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/rouenlesessarts-long-and-short-rtb-revisited-2017-videonextproject.11086/)

Update: Seanus's shadow fix (gets rid of some of the annoying flickering):
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6YBokXY5o8Qek5fbGFJbXA4SG8

We will be racing on the short layout for this fun run. The short layout has a shortcut on an old and rough section of road.

Race 1 - Lotus 25 (9 laps, with a qualifying session)
Race 2 - Lotus 49 (10 laps, with a qualifying session)

I will put up a practice server once I dl the track with both cars in it.

See first post for cosmetic track update (won't cause a server mismatch). Thank you Seanus.

Get on early and test my fix as last time I was positive my Nords fix was production ready and it turned out as SNAFU. :o

Did a couple laps, track I dont think is ready for a main series run for a fun run? wont tell you much about the cars. Visually its not horrible but those low poly bumps all over the track surface are so annoying I will give this round a miss.

The bumps do make it interesting, and a bit of a challenge, but I actually really enjoy this track. Great atmosphere and sense of speed.
With the accent on fun run it could be a great candidate. Keeps you on your toes.  ;) Dave O.

I think it's OK. The circuit is an old circuit on public roads, and the bumps give it that feel. The shortcut section in particular is deliberately a rough old road.

There are many propoerly made mod tracks that have bumps as designed not a basic washboard effect like this. A proper bumpy road on purpose is a good thing one bumpy only because its poorly made not so much. Its a fun run but more a pre season test so if its an indication of quality of tracks going to be used I likely will give the season a miss.

Silverstone 66
Rouen

4 of those are quality tracks the other 2 I hope Mosport is much better then Rouen.

Lotus 49 also ran other official tracks but we only have modern versions. Either may be better then a poor quality mod track but thats just assuming Mosport is no better then Rouen.

More like keeping you on your roof. Did a few laps and the ones where I did not crash into Marty I found it very difficult to judge braking points. A few practice laps is definitely advised!

Yea who cares if the tracks drive like crap because of a very poorly modeled road surface. Who cares if its version 0.2 and clearly shows this is a fair indicator of the quality of the track. Why settle for top quality mods and official content when there is so much junk stuff around to use instead.  ;)

Because I like the flowing Rouen layout, and the lack of brake markers. Any track can be fun, if you let it.

Clearly not you with such high standards.  ;D

Many here openly encourage low quality rips and generally poorly made mods, I avoid Thursdays even if home due to this and if Tuesdays go the same way I will avoid those too.

I was reading about pit stops in the 60's. It seems the drivers had to make quite a few unscheduled stops for mechanical issues. Reliability has certainly come a long way. It also seems that races were generally 2 hrs long, although that doesn't seem to have been a consistent rule. I would picture 1 hr races in the season with no conditions, 100% damage.

At least aero damage has no effect  ;D

Seeing that you have no interest in Thursday night racing and what we race and what tracks we race on, why do you make disparaging comments about it when ever you get bored or something ?  Why not just tell yourself  its not your thing and keep out of it ?

That can work both ways yea, if your not interested in someone elses opinion then stay out of the discussion. If you didnt mention your amazingly low standards for accepting a track and as you run Thursdays with the same standards is the only reason I mentioned it here.

Do I have to praise all the crappy rips/mods pushed on this forum recently? I am free to give my opinion just as you or anyone else does.

Also running a seperate "event" purposefully clashing with a Tuesday fun run I think was great form so well done on that.

I wont run this round but its not like I am going to post about running an alternative fun run to it on this forum at the same time.

No, but God knows what engine and gearbox damage is like in these old cars at 100%.

Why do I feel like I'm watching an episode of Seven Year Switch?

Any chance of Longford, or are there issues with it? I have low standards, so usually not too critical in assessing tracks. I get bored driving the same ones though.

Not wanting to wade into the other discussion but I would like to set the record straight re Tuesday fun run. I asked if Phil could put the Skip Biber up for a bit of a run for myself and any others unable to do the Nords run. I basically struggle to last 30 minutes or so at the present so the Nords enduro wasn't possible. I deliberately left it to the last minute to suggest so as not to have it seem like an alternate event to the Nords run. I think the Nords event got a good turn out and a very good completion rate for such an event.

Just wanted to make sure that Wally understood that no offence intended.

No offence taken, so long as everyone had something to do on Tuesday night.

Poor effort Gratulin.

The screen is not broken, all the wheels are still attached and pointing forward, the car is not upside down and there is no flames!

I have just read through this thread and yes it is a "forum" but working on the fact this is a community, it is in this section a racing sim forum and as such is removed from reality, so "fun" is  when ever any one is 'racing' here.

I look at all the work that many have done that sustains the high value "fun" and "satisfaction" here and appreciate how lucky I am to have the opportunity to participate.

I am a "conflict aversion" type, but I must say it, from my perspective, I wouldn't know a "rip from a scratch built" track, albeit the AC ones I know are advertised as such, and have trouble defining a poor one bu my crap sim driving.  and only measure them in my "fun".
"Cobra, the whole Cobra and nothing but the Cobra" initial mod release when compared to the AC's version was poor, but we here at XGN Thursday played a part in moving this mod into the mainstream's attention and having it picked up by AC.
I am sure there may be other opportunities for other mods and tracks to transition this way too, or have been without our knowledge?
If we don't try them..?

thank goodness this is a "forum" :)

RACE RESULTS (http://xgnassettocorsa.blogspot.com/2017/05/fun-run-lotus-25-49-at-rouen-les-essarts.html)

Race 1
1. Kcender87
2. Wally
3. Seanus

Race 2
1. Kcender87
2. Phil.8
3. Bacchulum

Fun cars, I reckon. When you're close to someone, or even side by side, they are nice to slide in tandem, so long as you don't touch! But very unpredictable, in terms of big high-damage crashes, or blown engines and/or gearboxes. That's often true of a lot of open wheeler types - you can crash big. But it sure makes the final race positions unpredictable.

The 49 was probably the better of the two cars - at least it was easier to brake in a straight line. I found the rear of the 49 was more liable to snap out on throttle than the slower 25 though.

Race 2 was going well with some good racing with Joe and Phil, until I got a tiny bit distracted glancing over to see Seanus in the pits, and ended up plowing into the grass embankment which royally screwed up my car.

Yip found the 49 more enjoyable. Would be a lot easier on modern tracks without the many level changes.

Yes, looking at the graphs in the race results, it looks like we were able to stay bunched up better in the 25, with a bunch of us finishing within 45 seconds. There were more big crashes in the 49, which spread the field out more.

I have to say that once I got the hang of it I enjoyed the 25 way more than the 49. It was harder to drive but felt more rewarding to me.

Personally I much preferred the 49. I hadn't driven either before the night and didn't do a complete qually lap in either but by the race I still had good fun. I was a little harsh on the gearbox in the 49 using the gears to slow me down and not really blipping as much as I needed to. Had a good fun few laps with Wally and Phil getting past Wally a couple of times but then missing gears and letting him by again. I seemed to have more pace on the downhill section at the start as it's fun getting it loose down there. Eventually the gear box had enough as was gone with a few laps to go..  ;D
