Title: Power supply for G25/G27 - Where to find?
Post by: AJ on March 18, 2016, 12:02:21 PM
Anybody know where I can get a replacement power supply for my G25 (same as G27)?

I have a problem with mine. It started out that my G25 would turn itself off and back on whenever certain light switches in my house were turned on or off regardless of where I had it plugged in, and has now progressed to the point where it just does it randomly. Happened last night on the 2nd last lap of race 1, luckily I was lonely on the track at the time and it didn't cause issues for anybody else, but it ruined my chance of a 5th place finished.

I have a mate who recently bought a second hand G27 and he brought it around here for testing purposes and it didn't have any problems, so we swapped power supplies and then my one was fine and his started doing the same thing, so it seems the power supply is at fault.

Problem is, I can't seem to find a replacement unit for any kind of reasonable price in Australia (ie. they're expensive enough to make me consider just buying a second hand G27), or they're reasonably priced but overseas.

No chance of getting a universal powersupply from Jaycar?

Just match the output voltage, amps and plug, or manually change plug yourself?

Yeah I've had a look and it doesn't look like they have anything that can do the 1.75A that this one does! (Well, they've got a 2.7A one, but it's like $60, which is in that "might as well buy a 2nd hand G27 area...)

Not local mate. Can get one from the states but postage is gonna be $30. Couple G27's going on feebay pretty cheap. Might be the best option as you get spare pots etc....

This seems to be the best option I've found so far

If I can find something that would be quicker than 3-4 weeks I'd be much happier.

Do you reckon this would do the job? I don't know enough about electronics to be sure  :-\

Yes ,this would be OK, higher amperage is fine. Just verify it is 240 ac input, does not say in spec
but as is sold in Australia should be 240AC.

I would say worth a try.

Can you do a swap with your mate again, for a prolonged period, to firmly establish the
power supply is the problem. Also check the power supply connector (male) is an exact match
for the connector in the wheel (female).

Connector is 100% right. Works perfectly except has the same problem that it did with the other power supply, but I don't understand what else could be the problem.

Unless it's a USB issue? Maybe there'a slight power drop on the USB bus on the motherboard when those certain switches in my house are turned on/off? But none of my other USB devices have any problems? I'm really lost.

At this stage of finding the source of the problem you will have to go back to the power supply.
If you do a swap with you mate that will eliminate the power supply. I do not believe USB buss load is a factor.
Are you using a power board that could be dodgy ? Solving these sorts of problems is logical process where
sometimes a process of elimination is the only way to do it.

Yeah mate, I'm with you on the process of elimination.

I am using a power board, but I've tried without it and have tried plugging it into many places around the house (upstairs, downstairs, garage, etc, without the powerboard and the problem remains. That was my first suspicion when the problem first arose.

The only reason I suspected USB to maybe be a factor is that it's really the only constant in the equation.

Had you changed anything else prior to this problem occurring? think carefully.
Always return to the scene of the crime! I know it can sometimes seem irrational but
you can usually find the problem. Just stay calm and work your way through the problem.

Don't worry rooshooter, troubleshooting in this sort of manner has been my job for the large majority of the last 20 years, so I know exactly what you're saying.

I've been thinking about it for weeks and I honestly can't think of anything that has changed. The only thing even remotely related at all was that we had a new dishwasher installed, but that was at least 2 months before the issue arose.

I truly sympathise  AJ (bloody PCs), you can see how consoles became so popular. Oh and
don't forget to replace the dishwasher. ;D

I think I might have isolated it to a USB Extension cable...

Back in the days when I've worked in hardware, we had a client with a computer that had a floppy drive fault.  We've changed it on the spot; nothing.  We've changed every imaginable component on the spot; nothing.   The fault remained.

Took it back to the workshop - fault gone.

Took it back to the client - all good.  Until 2 weeks later...

A new computer solved the problem.

They say it's all just bits and bytes, but I tells ya, it's sometimes black magic.
