Hardware & Reviews / Got me some new hardware
« on: February 10, 2016, 09:47:27 AM »
Finally entered the realms of real PC gaming, no more of this gaming laptop nonsense. Hadn't build a gaming machine in about 15 years; graphics cards got really fucking big!

Hardware & Reviews / New 'work' Laptop and selling old
« on: January 13, 2016, 11:55:00 AM »
Just ordered my new 'work' laptop; Alienware 15 R2 with a GTX980M 8gb GPU. Looks like it's just slightly better performance than a desktop GTX 960, so should be able to push my settings in AC up a little. http://www.dell.com/au/p/alienware-15-r2/pd?oc=y5185a4au&model_id=alienware-15-r2

If anyone is interested once it comes I'll be selling my current gaming laptop which is a MSI GS60 Ghost 2PC (http://www.msi.com/product/notebook/GS60-2PC-GHOST)

It cost $2300 + $100 for additional 8GB of RAM last January. I'd be happy to let it go for enough to allow me to build an okay gaming desktop, so somewhere around $1500. It's still quite a beast of a laptop, yet super slim and light.

Apps / Logitech G19 Live Data
« on: November 23, 2015, 10:35:02 PM »
I was in the market for a new gaming keyboard and Dick Smith had the Logitech G19s priced totally wrong at $70 when at most places it's around $250.

It has a little LCD screen on it, so being the nerd I am I downloaded the SDK and wrote an app to display live info from AC. In the video I'm holding the camera with one hand and driving one handed with an xbox controller hence the wrong gear changes and crashing before I get to third!

Unsure if anyone else has this keyboard, but if you do and want the app let me know.

Assetto Corsa / Feel free to use my server
« on: October 01, 2015, 10:29:58 PM »
I set up my server just to test the web server manager app I wrote and it doesn't get much actual use.

I thought I'd open it up as an XGN custom server, so anyone on the forum can have access to the web server manager and configure a track/car combo they feel like. Maybe check if anyone is on the server before going changing setting though  ;D Seems like it's also a good way to further test the web server manager, and gather some feedback for further enhancements to it.

The server is currently called XGN Joe's Server

To manage the server go to: http://ac.yeahyou.com:3000
Username: xgn
Password: the usual xgn password
Admin Password: the usual xgn password

The interface is pretty straight forward, you can change any of the settings you like, then go to the Server Status tab, stop the server, then start it again. It also scales down nicely on mobile to manage it from a phone.

I know people have been blaming stracker for warping, but if it's running, the stats are on http://ac.yeahyou.com

If you want any custom tracks/cars installed on the server ping me and I'll add them.

Assetto Corsa / Getting a good start
« on: July 29, 2015, 11:13:42 AM »
Any tips on a good start?

People always seem to shoot past me so I must be doing something wrong. I've played around with low revs, high revs, trying not to wheel spin, changing up sooner etc but still usually get overtaken by several people at every start. I'm assuming using h-shifter for cars that have it is quicker off the line?

General Discussion / Budget TV Advice
« on: July 17, 2015, 01:17:06 PM »
Any had any experiences with the cheaper TV brands? Soniq, JVC, DSE etc

I've always had Samsung TV's, and currently want to upgrade but can't really justify ~900 bucks for a 42" Samsung.

Assetto Corsa / GTEye springs
« on: June 13, 2015, 01:04:51 PM »
I remember a while ago somebody recommending the brake spring but has anybody tried the clutch and accelerator springs?

Can't decide whether to just get the brake or all 3.

Assetto Corsa / G27 FFB Settings
« on: June 09, 2015, 03:47:07 PM »
Anyone have any recommended FFB settings? I've been using the default since I started playing, but I did some reading yesterday and found quite a few different sources suggesting different settings.

Apps / Web Based Server Manager
« on: April 24, 2015, 01:41:26 PM »
Was wanting to play around with NodeJS so I created an API for modifying the AC server config files. I've also started a quick web based UI for it using Bootstrap and AngularJS. Also hoping I can start and stop the server/stracker with Node, meaning you could make any changes to the server and reset it straight from your phone. Haven't looked into that part yet. Could even create an embedded browser in AC like RSR does.

Anyone know if something like this already exists? I've been running a server for a few weeks and seems like it would be something useful.

Cheers

Assetto Corsa / Which camera view do you use?
« on: April 18, 2015, 08:18:17 PM »
I'm using the bonnet camera as that's what I've always used on previous driving games, but I have occasionally tried to the in car view and sometimes feel it's easier to tell exactly where the car is on the track.

I've read FoV is really important. From what I can tell the FoV option only affects the in car view (although Wobbly will disagree with me on this one). If I use an online FoV calculator and set what it suggests the game is pretty much unplayable with in car view. I think the problem is that I'm about 6 feet back from a 32" TV. I may start trying to sit as close as I can to it. Ideally I'd like a bigger TV too but not sure I can get that past the wife...

Any tips/suggestions on setup?

Assetto Corsa / How long have you been sim racing?
« on: April 17, 2015, 09:53:29 AM »
I feel I'm improving slowly but I've still got a long way to go before I can compete with most of you.

To give me some context, how long has everybody seem sim racing? For me it's now been 6 weeks (because playing single player forza games doesn't count)

Assetto Corsa / What do you drive in real life?
« on: April 15, 2015, 01:34:27 PM »
Being car nuts I assume most people have had a 'fun' car in their time?

When I was 22 I had a Mitsubishi FTO GR which was fun. The only car I've modded, mostly interior, but added stainless exhaust and air filter with Evo VI wheels.

When I was 24 I tossed up between an Evo or an S2000. Went with the S2000 which was fun, but kind of wish now I got the Evo.

Now with kids etc I have a Mondeo; nice to drive but doesn't really have the fun factor.
