Title: Sim racing aches and pains
Post by: Wally on May 31, 2018, 04:28:40 PM
The ball of my right foot has been a little sore for a while, and the other night I realised the soreness was exactly where I was pressing the pedals with my foot. So I'm going to try racing with light-soled shoes instead of socks.

I've never really had any wrist, shoulder or arm issues though through racing.

What physical toll is sim racing taking on you?

You mean besides copious amounts of red wine  :o

I have been using a shoe for my right foot for ages, after realising it was sore from trying to push the accelerator through the floor all the time  ;D.

I use light karting boots and gloves, pedals can get too cold in winter and gloves saves my hands going black

Exactly. I think the load cell brake hasn't helped either.

So... liver damage?

Go to the outback, walk around bare foot for a year and your soles will be just like leather. ;)
Save you buying some new shoes. 8)

I was getting pretty bad patella tendinitis when I was Sim Racing.  Went to the physio and started doing squats which pretty much fixed it.  I was having trouble walking properly before that though.

Seriously though, I turned up the sensitivity to avoid this.
I like the feel of the load cell but I don't want to have to put 100kg of pressure on it (ie.' in an F1 car).
I keep it very similar to my road car.
I sim-race for the mental aspect, not to get a work out. :P

Agreed... I've wound up the preload on my pedal to the point it almost registers on its own and reduced the max setting down to about 40 in game (I think, I'll have to double check). I ended up with a firm pedal that I don't have to push super hard, besides, I have a portable wheel stand so it moves slightly after a while if I have to push hard. I don't have room for a permanent rig.

I think in my case it was primarily the throttle, trying to push it through the floor to get to 110% throttle.

I have chronic bilateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow in both arms) and chronic chondromalacia (deteriorated kneecap cartilage) in both knees. The knees can play up a fair bit with racing and every now and then the elbows go off.
When they are giving trouble, I use straps to ease the pain. And yes, I'm getting old  :o

As Marc Bolan once said, "never trust anyone over thirty".
But you'd have to be well over 30 to know who the hell Marc Bolan is. ;) :P

A wise man (or comedian) once said, once you turn 60, never trust a fart....
Several years as an automotive mechanic I got a lot of lower back aches and bad knees, comes with the job I suppose. I got out of the industry because the pay was crap and dermatitis was eventually horrendous on the back of my hands (oils and hand cleaner). I've been operating machines for around fifteen years now and provided I don't slouch in the seat my back is fine (with a little stretching). But my neck and shoulders ache from looking down in excavators and looking out of the back window in dozers, also my wrists from pulling levers all day. I still can't hold a squat for too long otherwise my knees don't like to straighten back out lol, all this going on for so long but I swear only much more noticeable since I turned 40 last year lol. My right wrist can sometimes flare up a bit while racing but I wouldn't give up on it because I enjoy it too much.

I don`t want to admit it or maybe i refuse to see it,but i cant hold a steering wheel anymore!!! After 30 min i am in pain,my elbows r a mess, and the stiffness of the neck just make impossible to enjoy a race.Even on my motorbike if i ride hard or longer that 60 m my elbows are in pain.....if i do a wheely ....its a mess   ahhahaahahahahahaha.
I have tried"voltaren" and its ok for a little bit.Maybe i should ask some help to a phisician or something.........bugger cause i am really enjoing my life lately more than ever, but unfortunately racing for 60 min its hard for me at the moment.

..........i am still occasionally pull my dick with little consequences to my elbow though........go figure!!!!!   8) 8) 8)

Yeah, that doesn't sound right. I would see a physio. You probably need to strengthen certain muscles in your forearm. Even if you're strong, certain muscles can still get weaker than others and overworked and then painful.

It really does sound like you have RSI in your elbows , you need to see a GP to refer you for some help.
