Sorry to hi-jack your thread but is a Z97 MoBo a safe bet or is it obscure?
(I don't know squat about MB's and sockets and what-not :-[)

I have a Z97-A, for what it's worth.

I just ask because I looked to upgrade my CPU but I can't find any that suit my MoBo, I just don't want to get stung again with unupgradable hardware. :o

It's quite common, if you don't upgrade frequently, to have to get a new mobo and CPU together. They are forever changing the CPU socket design, probably in a cushy deal with the mobo manufacturers to keep us having to buy both.

I was just about to say that.
But also; as new technologies emerge, new connectors, new memories, if you don't upgrade every year or maybe 2 years at most, it's guaranteed that you need to go for the whole lot.

Nvidia 970 seems to be all the go now for a graphics card. Should last you for a while.

Umm, the GTX 970 has a 3.5GB VRAM Issue, I don't know if they are going to fix this but your best bet is to go with a R9 290/280x if you want something of the same price that has equal/more power

From what I read they just oversold the gtx 970 specs a bit...I've had no issues and they use bugger all power compared to the 290 etc which are really hungry I understand.

The issue *can* arise if you try to a single 970 in very high resolutions, or play games that access the last half gig.  This isn't a big concern, usually, and I think they've already released beta drivers that restrict the memory.
The other spec "mistakes" are just incorrect information, the card works as it works.

I wouldn't worry about it too much (as I don't, using 2x970 myself).

I still would not change to the crappy Ati drivers :D

Edit:
altho even very-high definitions don't seem to trigger this problem.  Or this is now on a safe driver.

A 970 is a very good value card, lawsuit or not.
