Tassie Storms
« on: May 11, 2018, 01:09:34 PM »
Last night in the once in a lifetime storm in Tassie we got 180mm of rain overnight at our place and our wireless nbn antenna got hit by lightning and fried my nbn box, so I will not be online for a while and thus cannot update the server for next week.  No idea when I will be fixed.

We also have a lot of other damage,  driveway washed away, fences down, collapsed banks, bit of flooding inside  and god knows what else I am going to find :-[

Does any smart person know if I can use an Ethernet cable to plug my laptop which I am hotspotting to my phone into my pc so I can use my PC or is it easier to just buy a wireless adapter ?

Hey Phil, I hope everything will be OK. Not much I can do up here in Queensland, but thoughts and prayers mate.

At least nobody was hurt.

Good luck getting everything back on track Phil. I'll update the server for a Thursday fun run.

Really sorry to hear this Phil, I thought being high up you would have escaped the flooding,  I did not think about the hill behind you :'( :'(.

For the moment just concentrate on getting your place back together, we can wait regarding server etc.

regards,
Denis and Lenore

AFAIK you can't just connect 2 computers with an ethernet cable - it requires different wiring, called a crossover cable.   You'd need a switch in between, otherwise.
I do not know how well the network sharing would work, never tried to set this kind up before, sorry.

Yes your right, you'll need a crossover cable. Basically the same cable but the wires are in a different order. If you don't have the crossover, then you can do it with a switch in between. You would need to share the connection on the laptop (Which I think enables ip forwarding for that connection in Windows) and you'll need to manually setup your connection on your PC to point the gateway to the laptop, whilst having both computers on the same subnet obviously.

Wouldn't it just be easier for you to plug the phone into USB and have that tethered straight to the racing PC?

Don't most NICs auto detect the connection and do the crossover for you?
I don't think Internet connection sharing works in win 10?

This is an outline of my issue I had to submit to my complaints officer so the fools could try and understand

Last Thurday the 10th of may we had a huge lightning storm where I live in Tasmania.

At about 8.45pm that night our power went out, at about 11.30 pm our roof got hit by lighnting, I presume it hit the fixed wirelss antenna, we heard a huge static click sound and a bang.

Next morning when power came back on we smell buring plastic and our power started tripping out on the circuit breakers. It turned out to be the nbn box which was smelling of platic as was hot to the touch.

We are connected to fixed wireless and the storm must of also affected the tower we connect to as that had an outage until 8.30pm monday the 14th.

I rang Telstra on the Friday after the storm to let them know that my hardware was dead in the hope of booking in a tech to come and replace the burnt out nbn box, I am willing to pay for this if needs be but they said they cannot do anything until after Monday when the tower is back online as they cannot send out techs during maintenance or even book them in in case the problem is not at my end.

Monday evening the Telstra staus page says tower is up and running and there is a service in our area, I speak with neighbours who all confirm they have a working service from monday evening.

Next morning I check the service status out of habit by now and it says that there is scheduled maintenance at my address, just my address all my neighbours show a working service and speaking with them again confirms this. I live in the country, I am pretty sure there is no maintenance at just my house.

Anyway I ring telstra again on the Tuesday to see about someone looking at my hardware and they say they cannot do that because there is scheduled maintenance, the consultant I spoke too was not sure what to do even so they raised a complaint for me, my complaint officer has not rang me and each time I try and ring them I am told they are offline and will contact me within 24 hours. Seems like telstra are just stalling me until Monday when they seem to think my service will return with a burnt out nbn box. They are the most frustrating non listening people who treat you like a dickhead I have ever dealt with.

I have been calling daily and they seem convinced my service will resume on Monday somehow by magic, burnt out nbn nbox and all, once the so called maintenance just at my address is over, I can check any number of address on the service status page and they all say service is normal, speaking with 4 neighbours all on fixed wireles with telstra they all have working service. I am sure once Monday the 21st comes around the service status page will update with a new date and message saying maintenance at this address, but there is nothing wrong with the tower as my neighbours and whole suburb have working internet.

Now the tower maintenance has been pushed back to the Friday the 25 as I knew it would as there is nothing wrong with the tower and they will not allow a tech to come and replace the burnt out hardware until the tower is fixed so will be  awhile yet before I am back online properly with this endless circle of bullshit happening

Oh ffs...typical of T.  My condolences, Phil.   They're only quick to react when you happen to be late with a payment, eh?
