Season 28 discussion
« on: April 11, 2019, 10:01:22 AM »
With season 27 drawing to a close, it's time to start thinking about the next season. I'll throw a few ideas around for feedback, thumbs up or down, or alternative suggestions.

I like Seanus's suggestion a while back: you can nominate how much ballast you want to carry each round, with the incentive for carrying ballast being a points multiplier, and I'd also add that the race starting position is set not by qualifying but by how much ballast you carry, with the most ballast at the front. That way, you can choose to chase points in the season standings, or win races, or set yourself up for close racing.

As to the cars to use, I'm looking at our most successful recent past seasons, in terms of numbers of actual starters. They were, in decreasing order:
  • Ford Escort
  • LMP1/GT3 (I'd like to make it a single make/class series though - maybe just GT3?)
  • Maserati GT4
  • Porsche GT3 Cup
Maybe revisit one of those popular series?

Or we could try some FWD racing - Abarth 500 Assetto Corse?
Or this mod: https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/seat-leon-tcr-2018.20109/

This modder had input (feedback, telemetry) from a race driver of these cars, and the review comments rate it very highly in terms of FWD accuracy.

Thoughts?

Always love the Escorts no matter how many seasons we do in them.

I'm not a fan for anything FWD to be honest (don't like to discriminate), but if it's got enough power to steer with your right foot, I'm all for it  :o!

Also what he said ^ however...I believe the seat would introduce some much needed excitement, close door to door racing, something different, this is a fantastic mod (try it offline), a little bit of bumping and grinding. What I was thinking of was to have everyone to start with, say 100kg ballast + 100 restrictor (maybe different numbers but whatever) and as the season progressed the slower guys teams "invest" in some better performance parts, removing some of those things. A combination of what we did in the last Escort season and the current season with the fastest lap times. Also a world tour, some of the best known and some of the least known tracks of the world, euro, aus etc. Did anyone try the Australian tracks from the link I put in the other thread, Albert Park seems good but I haven't done much testing. I'm OK with anything though

GT3's are great and there is a variety of cars to choose from...all pretty close in performance, which makes it interesting.
You don't have issues with trying to make them equal with ballast etc. If you get us the tracks we can decide what car to go for.
Restrictor/ballast for the guys in the lead in order to make it a close series.
That's what I'd vote for.
The good thing about the GT3's is that, while being close, there are strengths and weaknesses among them depending on the track and that mixes things up just naturally.
I like the Escort as well, but something more racey after our current ones wouldn't be a bad thing for a change. Wasn't a huge fan of the GT3's being mixed up with the LMP's.

I take street cars any day instead of highly strung racecars, otherwise I'm easy.
Err...so from the selection above, anything starting with GT or LNP gets a NO vote from me

Yeah, I find these sophisticated mechanisms to mix things up not so good...like it being kept simple and predictable and if that means that Matthew wins the series again, fine...well, you could give him a tow bar and...yeah, just make it hard enough for the super fast guys  ;)
Another thing we could do was the 2004 Ferrari F1, but that may get us a smaller field and having 25+ cars on the grid would be cool.

We tried these once, but didn't have great success with them (although I liked them). Lower numbers, easy to rear end in braking zones, big spread of lap times.

Maybe historic F1, but more predictable, less hyper than current cars!

Maybe a Formula Abarth or Renault 3.5 season. Whatever we run, I'm happy

Low tech open wheeler with wings, or '67 mod, although I'm enjoying my sabbatical.
Maybe if I plug the rig in I'll want to race again.
