Car buying...and incidentally; the old GTL stats :)
« on: December 17, 2014, 11:14:17 PM »
Ok I've installed the car-buyer (or car-renter) program;
http://ac.ysumail.com/

I've simply fired it up with the old database, so it's full of GTL stats as per my last DB backup. :)

There are probably a few things not working as the environment is a bit different, nothing that can't be ironed out I'm sure.

In any case, feel free to play with it, I'll give you guys admin access - to any of you who want to have a look into how it's set up. PM me.
(I'll post the admin login into the forum's admin area to save some hassles)

In fact there's some work to do, not just design (altho if anyone wants to...).
My time is limited, so if anyone wants to play with the design later, html/css and minimal php knowledge will be needed.

The content needs updating of course and the DB will need to be set up properly, if we want to use it.

For now, feel free to play around, I can re-set the DB anytime.

Oh, the result parser will need a bit of loving, but I'm sure Wally knows the result file format enough so it won't cause us much headache.

Is there anywhere that explains how it all works?   I may have missed it.

I also had a look at the site but couldnt find any real info about car trading system. Just a mention of points and prize money but it doesnt say if you get more money for winning or losing. It does say you get fined for breaches. It says each person must use each car once so that doesnt seem much like a handicap system just a way of mixing up the grid but still not knowing what it is or how it works makes it quite hard to have any opinion on it.

Sorry, I'll try to describe it simply.  You can also look at the admin, to have a bit more of an insight, I'll send you two the login.

Basically
- money in: everyone start with some money in the bank, and earns some each round,
you earn more money by finishing lower (the scale is 100% flexible, just like the points scale)
- money out: each car costs some money, and you need to "buy" a car for each round, it is closed a few days before the race

So when the car price scale & the finishing earning scale are balanced, it creates a nice mixed field.

The earnings are based on finishing position, though.  So it's a harder balancing than the current one; if someone had a shitty round, they'll get more money for the next.  But it also allows strategies, you can sacrifice positions for money for the next round.

It's strictly for fun, you can't pretend otherwise :)

Thanks Bird. I'll keep this in mind for future seasons.

Sounds like it would be worth a shot at least.

ahhh I remember those days...
very cheap wheel and pedals,
suction cups to kitchen table,
sliding around table,
no FFB,
no pedal feel,
and long races where my wife would say "ENOUGH!" and I would run into a wall for a DNF, (mostly on purpose  ??? ), and/or being lapped!

Lol Bruce. I only just gave away my old wheel 2 weeks ago, Logitech Wingman, no ffb but it did have screw down clamps. The main problem with it was the pedals, I had to brake way earlier than most everyone else.
Suction cups would have been terrible.

Well Steve, it must have been the "Percy Curutty" of sim training, because you can out brake the best!

It was painful when combined with lack of skill :P
