Title: Fun Run - Lotus 3-Eleven at Road America
Post by: Wally on July 03, 2018, 10:35:58 PM
And so on to the other car choice, the Lotus 3-Eleven.

Track: Road America 3.6 (https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/road-america.7095) (make sure you have a recent version of 7zip to be able to open the rar file).

7 lap sprints.

Here's my setup brain dump.

Turn TC off... nah, too slippery, too dangerous. Go for 2. Maybe I should still try 3.
Tyres pressures set... check.
Check the cambers... hmmm, fronts won't go negative enough, max them out.
Check the aero balance... spot on with default wing.

Feels a bit understeery... take 1 click off front ARB. Better.

Feels a bit oversteery on corner entry... 2 clicks more front bump, 2 clicks off rear rebound. Better.

I notice that it seems to like keeping a little throttle on mid-corner - don't completely coast.

OK, feels pretty good now, but how the hell is Phil so much faster? Let's check out the speed diff on stracker. Hmmmm, he's going slower in that long, long right hander after the bridge and then getting more speed down the next straight. OK, let's try that. Let the car straighten up more mid-slow corner, then gun it out flat. Excellent.
But that fast right hander there is tricky... let's try stiffer rollbars to see if I can carry more speed. Nope, no better. Softer rollbars? 1 click off the rear is good. 1 click off the front as well makes the rear a bit too lively, so scrap that.

1 more click rear wing? Nope, no better.
1 less click rear wing? Nope, too lively in the rear again. OK, leave the wings as they are.

Good for a 2:09.8.

Check the aero balance... spot on with default wing.

Using the Car Physics app, you can get the weight distribution.
Aero Centre of Pressure should be just rearwards of this mark.
In the wings app there's a % figure, that's % front. ;)

Hi Wally,

it looks like I won't be able to make it tonight. Sorry.

This means last week's race was my last one until October. I will, as usual, pass by the forum any now and then. Happy racing to all!

Here's some quick RACE RESULTS (http://xgnassettocorsa.blogspot.com/2018/07/fun-run-lotus-3-eleven-at-road-america.html).

For anyone who wasn't here tonight, there was plenty of good, close racing to be had in these cars. The cars are easier to drive than the Porsche (no chance of blowing gearboxes), and you can definitely size up your passing opportunities with more confidence. And yet, everyone throughout the field made a few mistakes on the night (usually when taking too much kerb or grass), so there's a good chance that the field positions get mixed up, or you can catch up to someone.

Based on tonight's fun run, I changed my vote from the Porsche to the Lotus.
