Well, it has been very quiet in this sub forum, lets get some action happening.
A few of us are into photography, and a few of us want to get into photography, so lets make this thread a convenient place to come and ask for help, constructive feedback, tricks and tips and maybe even organise a few photography get togethers!!
As we're all into motorsport i'll start with a couple of motorsport pics, but lets make this thread about ALL types of photography :)

Cal Crutchlow setting up for Stoner Corner at Phillip Island, you can see the flame at his exhaust as he rolls off.
This was taken with my Nikon D800E & 300/f4 on a monopod.

Well my photography is still going along very slowly, although you showing me some settings on my camera has made a big difference and certainly has me interest up again.
Below I took some staging? shots but I haven't posted them any where, partly I was playing around with distance and position of the car as at that time of day the sun had gone. Tomorrow morning I am heading back their as the sun will be behind me and I will hopefully take something better. I shall experiment with the 200mm as well as I have a car park across the road to setup in.

Anyway until tomorrow morning arrives this is all I have. I don't like any of these pictures but they were the best of the 100's of photo's I took. I would never had posted these anywhere thinking they are GOOD ( because I know they are rubbish :) ) if I can get some help on what I need to focus on, that would be great.

The reflections make the shot interesting.
I like the garage idea, i would recommend going there at dawn or dusk, the light will be much more interesting, you will need your tripod and set the camera to f5.6 to f9 and the lowest ISO setting where whole numbers are shown, it will be either 100 or 200, don't use L03 ect. If you have torches, you can illuminate some of the garage from behind the car.
Look in your camera manual or on the internet to see if there is an exposure delay mode, on my D800 it is d4 in the custom settings manual. I have mine set for 3 seconds when i'm doing long exposures. What this setting does is delay opening the curtain for 3 seconds, this gives a great chance for your shot to be sharp and free of movement caused by the mirror bouncing when you release the shutter.

Torches, great idea! I will try vary the f-stop and see what comes out.

After some googling, switching to live view in my camera locks the mirror, but some say it isnt true, will try a timer mode as well???

Live view does lock the mirror up in all DSLR cameras as the sensor needs to be exposed to the frame...
A remote control is a great accessory to have...

Here is a shot of my Brother InLaws Caddy, i shot it so the focus is the bumper and grill, the rest of the car hidden in the old shed..

Geeez capturing the image is hard enough but setting the scene I find harder, you have a talent.

In regards to setting the scene... it's just practice... I have thousands of images that don't work, at least these days of digital photography, practice is cheap :)
Oh, by the way, you need to paint your horns!

I like what you were going for with this one, i'd mirror the position of the car and your location so the old signs between the roller doors would be visible near the bonnet, whilst getting rid of the crappy looking brown door. I think a darker version of this at dusk would work well with the gritty red bricks.

The main objective is to get rid of the ugly door.
If you have room, try the 200mm and get down low, try headlight level, don't worry to much about getting close to the corner, depending on the ambient light level, you could try a few shots with your parkers then headlights on...
If there is a drive way that is higher than the apron put the car there and try and get low, sort of like this..

Hi Steve, well the alarm went off this morning and thats all I remember......
So talking about polarizer filter's the other day, which would you recommend I start with.

Polarizing filters are expensive so you want to minimise the number that you have to buy. Do both of your lenses have the same size filter thread? I use Tiffen, but Hoya, B&W and many other companies make them.
The other thing to consider is if you are going to like the look the filter gives. They are great at maximising the colour of an object, but for cars you might not like what they do to reflections.....
Let me know what your filter size is and if they are the same as mine i'll blast over one day and we can have a photography day...

I'm 52mm
There are some for $59 (kenko) and hoyo are for $124. (stop laughing) I don't want super cheap and nasty but something that is usable and suited to my entry level $500 camera.
I am keen for a picture day or as you mentioned "getting the guys together" for a photo day with cars etc. What I am looking for as far as a polarizing goes is to reduce reflections on my windscreen and maybe shooting into water to see through it would be pretty cool as well but I'm not sure what I will get with a cheap filter to be honest.

The cheap filters will still polarize, they may produce a colour cast but nothing you can't fix.
Just remember that when the windscreen reflections go so do the bonnet and roof reflections...
I'll check and see if my lenses will fit on your body, what model do you have again? If they do then you can try a few good lenses as well as filters :)

Those Bathurst globes were on everything at one stage.
I know reflection will be lost on the paintwork, it will really just be a trial and error thing, I might take some car pictures and hate the polarize filter or I might love it.

Tried a cheaper Polarizer lens, took it back the next day. I liked the effect but decided to get one with tuffer glass.
Playing around again in the kitchen at night.

Still life is all about the light, how did you light this?
Here is one of mine, i recently bought 2 elinchrom studio lights, this shot used both lights with 60 cm softboxes placed either side of the subject, from the exif you will see this was shot late morning in a very bright room with bright lights. Set your camera to M and select ISO100, f11 1/200th sec and take a shot, tell me what you see...

I tried those setting inside with a normal light and didnt see much. I saw that photo on your Flickr and that what inspired me towards flowers, did you use a macro lens there?? don't think I will do them again but there natural colours are amazing. Yours look like a nest of birds with there bird like beaks waiting to be fed.
I used my phone's led to light it. f22 10sec ISO100, I would have liked some more detail.... can I change settings?

I like the way the 200 turns the background to blur. Quite useful for car shows id imagine.

Yeah, the long lenses do well at isolating your subject, if you look at the Packard image, it also separates the foreground as well.

Manual focus? I couldn't pick a focus point on the car for auto. The upload is only 89kb

I had a look at the 600kb still to small to find the focus point.
Just a random question, is there a lens that you own that didnt cost the earth, sort of a bang for buck lens that performed better than what you thought?
Let me know when your going to a car show next and I might tag along if that's cool. I hope Bruce might have a car show coming along soon?

Unfortunately all my lenses did cost the earth....
I have just bought 2 new ones :) This one was cheap... A 14mm f/2.8 Samyany manual focus prime, it was $439.00. I also bought a Nikon 16-35mm f/4.0 it was about $1,000 more expensive.. I have to shoot about 5 recording studios in Sydney soon so i needed a few ultra wides.

It was very misty in the high country, so this image suited a B&W conversion.
