"Occasional Sunday Racing"?
« on: February 01, 2016, 09:05:16 AM »
Christopheracer suggested the idea of longer races on Sundays, 90 minutes or so, but on a "wider calendar" than weekly.
  • With a monthly event it should assist in planning for all, allow the invitations to other leagues, ie: our good mates at A.R.S.E....
  • And use some of the little used content, both cars and tracks.
  • more ideas to come...

Wally, is there any way you could use your gizmo wizardry to figure out a way to do a driver swap, teams enduro type thing?

Eg, 40 lap race where each driver can only do 10 laps at a time?  You could have the second driver in the same car waiting in the pits, and then when the first driver goes to the pit box the second driver is able to drive out of their pitbox and vice versa?  Is there any way, using some ingenuity to come up with a way this could be monitored via your data output? Or by PLP?

I think it would be quite fun to team up with someone and mix up the teams a bit so slower drivers are with faster ones.  I'd quite enjoy watching my team mate race around and then head out myself to build on what somone else has acheived, etc.

One way I read about in another forum was to run a long free practice session. Each team starts with their 1st driver. When Driver 1 stint finishes they pit, make note of the number of laps and then exit the server. Driver 2 then enters the server in the same car/skin and drives their stint etc etc. Sounds a bit tedious but could work. Most enduros are duration based and at least each team would be racing each other in real time on the track.

EDIT: Also, spectator 'cars' could be available for other team members to 'spectate'.

EDIT EDIT: 3 teams of 3 drivers each. 3 cars defined on the server plus 6 'spectator cars', say Fiat Abarths.

Each team has
1xalien
1xmid fielder
1xgentleman racer

Not sure how a team is guaranteed to get the specific team car when 'driver swap' occurs.

I reckon this would be doable. I could do it in a race session, where you have to come in to do a pit stop, then your team mate, who's waiting in his own pit box, could go, released by chat.  Or maybe even a dedicated app, where you nominate your partner, and get a ”Go!” message when you can go.

Sounds like it would be worth checking out Gratulin, I'd be intersted in knowing how it panned out in the end.

I was thinking something along the lines of, but not sure if possible:

1)  If a time-stamp is output of when someone enters or leaves the pit lane, you could make sure Driver 2 can only leave the pit lane once Driver 1 has entered.  If Driver 2 leaves before Driver 1 enters, a 5 x time penalty occurs for the difference.  This way each driver can pit and just sit in the pits until it is their turn to go out again.  OR start in the pits by not clicking the drive button until after the lights go out.

2)  If we have time-stamps for when entering and leaving the pit box a similar thing could occur.  The only issue would be if one driver pairing were at either end of the pit lane this could present an advantage or disadvantage as you obviously can't have two cars using the same pit box.  However it might even itself out if this was the case as during one swap the driver up the pit exit end would get an advantage but then the next swap the driver toward the pit entry end would be disadvantaged.

For qual one driver from each team could be nominated to set a time.  This way all the teams cars start together on the grid, as opposed to being separated by the second drivers who set a time but don't actually start on the grid.  Heck, you could even do a hotlap format.

I think 2 driver teams woud be best, otherwise you'd have to make the race really long for all 3 drivers to have a fair crack.  eg, say two stints @ 10 laps each = 60 laps x 2 minutes per lap = 2 hours, plus qual, pitting, etc.

It all relies on our resident coding wizard though ;)

My ideas for an app... You and your teammate are both in the same team number, which you put in your PLP.ini.

E.g. TEAM=1

Then the app can send a chat message which is only displayed for your teammate, also in team 1, that you've pitted and he can go. The you wait in pits for the go message when he pits. Of course TS will also help. The app can also put out timestamps say when the car's in team 1 pit and leave pits, for checking after the race.

This could arbitrarily be extended to allow for more than one car in a team, if you also have CAR=1, CAR=2, CAR=3 etc to do the stints in the right order.
Orrrrrr... You could double stint, if you have CAR_STINT=1,1,2 for example.

I'm assuming that AC doesn't get mightily confused if a car sits in pits for 10 laps though. It could be difficult to figure out when the race is over, as the lap count would be buggered, but the app can also output a countdown to when the race is over, such that when the time is up, the leader finishes the lap he's on. Assuming you can tell who the leader is!

It probably really takes a server plugin.

That might be why a practise session works best - you use elapsed time instead of laps for race end.

Yeah, that sounds like the biggest issue - how to know which team is on what lap number.  Not just so you know who is in what place, but also for blue flags.  Ideas:

Could the app keep count of how many laps a team has done and display this in chat each time one of the team member's cars cross the start line.  If unsure whether you are racing someone you could just ask them what lap no. they are on.  Once a team gets to the last lap and then finishes you could have noticeable messages displayed in chat also.  The only issue I see with this is that I'm guessing it relies on crossing the start line as a counter... so what happens if someone pits after the start line and then the second driver pulls out of their pit box before the start line, effectively counting 2 laps.  Or vice-versa and losing a lap.

Another more simple work-around would be to make the stint lengths compulsory, have the first driver do 3 stints and the second driver do 2 stints, and base the race lap number on the first driver.  Eg: 50 lap race, Driver 1 does 10+10+10 laps so the race is set at 30 laps.  When Driver 1 completes 30 laps the race is won for that team.  Driver 2 can only do 2 stints @ 10 laps each, or 20 laps, so the race won't end by driver 2 completing the total race laps early (because he isn't allowed).  That's just an example though.  You could fiddle with this method to give driver 2 more laps, or perhaps not even make the stint lengths compulsory as long as driver 1 did the first and last stint and was the only one in the team to completed the set number of laps.

This thread might be better off in the general AC forum area so more people see it?

It may be simplest to just let drivers race all the time without any regard to blue flags etc. team with the highest aggregate laps at flag fall wins.

Do you mean without doing driver swaps?

With driver swaps. Just keep the total laps for each driver once they pit.

Maybe we could do a couple of enduros and then build up to some sort of driver swap/team aggregate racing. The longest race I have done in AC is about 40 mins. I know I can do 120 minutes on my own pretty easily and would like to do something like that before teaming up with people. I think it's more important to select the right car track combo's at this point.

I love the enthusiasm all the same :-)

I suggest the P4/5 Competizione @ Spa.

A car that is quick but fairly easy to drive at a track that is big, not too difficult, and has lots of overtaking possibilities, while nice to look at.

The other option would be the BMW 1M S3 @ Zandvoort.  Slower car, less setup required, smaller track with plenty of action if only 10 - 15 cars are racing.
