My new Daily/Track car
« on: February 17, 2014, 09:26:07 PM »
I have been thinking about this for awhile trying to find a car that I can drive to the track, take the spare wheel out and do some track work and then drive it home again. A car that can do both, be my daily and my track car. At the moment there is the hassle of car trailers (hire of) and reliability, not knowing if a problem will pop up or not on the track day, is hard to predict when they sit for so long in between events and having three kids, it is hard to find proper time and the money do have such a luxury as a track car. Also I have two cars to look after, ensure they are maintained and getting love, having one would be easier and makes more sense.

So the search began for a car that ticked a few boxes, On top of my list was coil overs with adjustable camber and damper. It also needed to hold it's own power wise, not back yard built, nothing stupid but good honest power from the factory and I didn't want something to heavy either and all this for as cheap as possible. I started talking to my Dad about this and he got talking about someone else that is changing from his normal class of racing to a new class. WRX series GC8's. Not my favorite car but performance wise they ticked all the boxes, but I just couldn't bring myself to something that was so bland, There were just so many of them around in the 90's and now, they aren't old enough to be classic and still look so boring to me. I'm sure one day they will  be admired for what they are, in shows etc but right now they are in the r32, r33 and r34 plus the 90's evo class.

So what could be left that could meet my needs and have a small cult following.....

An 01 WRX, cheap because of there ugly face, yes this is me  :D :D :D

BC fully adjustable coil overs.......... tick
Power............... tick
Light weight............ Almost a tick at 1390
Cheap.......... tick
No WRX blue........ Big tick

I picked it up on the day I looked at it, purchased off a mechanic who happily put the car on the hoist for me and pulled off all the inspection covers. I thought where else can someone do this before buying a car... Mechanical the car is sound with full service history and the only mods been done in the last 3 months were brand new BC coil overs and cat back exhaust, costing 3K. So this was pretty much what I had been looking for, a WRX that hasn't been thrashed. After a few words with my wife, we decided yes. The mechanic RWC the car while we went and had lunch in the city. Picked it up and drove home. Couldn't believe I was driving home in this car.

The paint on the other hand was... well like sandpaper..... it was contaminated with tree sap and dirt and all sorts of shit. After four times washing the car, and then clay block with a good wax after, the paint looks and feels like new. People have actually commented on it how good it looks. Anyway here she is....

13 of April I will try and get a run in at Sandown, but I'm hoping something before then with the Alfa club at P.I. All in all I'm happy and so is my wife (less cars)  ;)

Well you know a bargain when you see it and no time wasted.  That looks like a new car.
Now to keep your license! :)
Looking forward to seeing it Glen.

Green I really liked, didn't want to be another blue wrx getting around.  Seems to be less of an attraction as well. Bruce.. haha I wish I could have stayed with something with a chrome bumper but it just wasn't feasible.  Can't wait to hit the track in this and don't forget your helmet flatty. ... The wrx club have a passenger session if your game....

Have some 1 3/4" su's up for sale and a spare 202 missing some rocker gear (saddles from memory) motor unknown condition and a engine hoist with 4 360' rotation on all wheels. Ring or pass on my number if you know anyone that is interested.

I'll put it in the calendar and try and get there.
No probs on the invite I took it as a "tongue in cheek" hence " I'll bring my helmet but watch a few laps"
Pleased the HQ is local.

I should take a look, I missed taking the wagon to Heathcote, on of my sons-in-law "had" the job of letting me know about these events!

Might have to do some tuning and ,cough, practice runs "locally"  ;D

Seeing as Calder is hard on brakes, I ordered some new rotors and pads.

Isn't the run off at end of the straight still there? If so you just need to ask them to leave the gate open and save the brakes :)

I found a nice, subtle aero kit for you, apparently it's effective:

I could barely see the changes.......
