Dash Cams
« on: June 11, 2015, 11:21:39 AM »
Hello all,

I am contemplating buying a Dash Cam and am hoping some of the car enthusiasts here at XGN might have some suggestions as to which are the better ones as there are so many to choose from.

Front and Rear camera would be preferred. Ive seen them range in price from around $40 - $80 for the cheaper ones and up to $250+ for the more expensive ones.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. :)

Get the expensive one!
Hell, I dunno anything about them :)
But I'd buy one that has good resolution, good field of view, good framerate, and good nightvision :)
With SD card capability.
What's the point of having one if it does not record properly?

Even if I did buy an expensive one it would be cheap compared to the money it could save someone if there is a dispute over an accident.
Most peoples excess on their insurance would be at least $300 -$500 (depending on age etc), so the Dash Cams are certainly viable at around $250
Thanks for your input tho Bird, the only things that worries me with your response is 'Hell, I dunno anything about them'. :D

But your other comments sound logical. ;)

I mean I don't know any specifics/brands/whatnot :)

Actually ; one more thing I'd look at is the video format.  You don't want to record in some god-forsaken format (eg quicktime, or even worse; some proprietary one)

From what I have noticed most seem to record as AVI or MP4, still shots are JPEGS.

I have a cheap one not sure of the brand

it has trouble at night time sensing movement

it is motion sensitive  so at night it turns off when it thinks there is no movement

I think they are great and will buy a better one  but as it was a present from my Daughter I cant change it yet :o

What I use to capture in car videos would be over kill for you, just go with something that is easy to use and captures well at night. Record time could be a factor and ease of use.

Here's a face book group for dash cams Australia https://www.facebook.com/DashCamOwnersAustralia

They have people asking the same sort of questions all the time  ;D might be useful.

No worries, looks like a decent piece of equipment. Good luck and let us know how they go if you go down that route.
