socket 1151
« on: January 07, 2015, 04:15:44 PM »
Hello guys!
My pc is a 2008 system,7 years old,but I still use it ,it runs everything I need to be run,i am not a pc enthusiast ,one of those who wants upgrade every week searching that lost  one more frame rate. ::)

My question is:Should I wait for the new 1151 socket or just get a 9 series motherboard coupled with i5 4690 and maybe just put a broadwell cpu down the road when they will be available? I think in this way I will be able to invest more money in a high end graphic card............. :-[There is 7 years of my life in this pc and I am reclutant to get a new one but it is time to say goodbye to" Adrenaline",,,..his name...lol :o

I'd go with the older socket (tried & tested!) and a decent, but not over-the-top cpu (a good i5).  If the new socket has any teething problems, you will buy into it by going for the latest tech.  It'll then force you to change system parts fairly soon, again.
The gfx card is the crucial bit, the CPU power you get from an average i5 is more than enough for casual gaming.

Nvidia 970 seems to be all the go now for a graphics card. Should last you for a while.

Altho I've seen good brand 980 gtx's for $550 US or so ...just sayin' :)
Still the 970 is unbeatable for a price/performance ratio in that higher region

Actually; what screen setup are you planning on running?  If it's just one 'regular' HD screen, you're good with a 970.  And if you buy the MSI one it's even overclockable a bit :)

Hell yes.
In order of quality, the ones you should consider are these brands - I'd not bother with the rest, it's just not worth buying a questionable quality system drive.
- Intel
- Samsung
- Crucial
They're here:
http://search.pccasegear.com/search#?p=Q&lbc=pccasegear&uid=170663902&ts=ajax&w=SSD&isort=price%20rev&method=and&view=list&af=brand:intel%20brand:crucial%20brand:samsung%20category:harddrivesssds
(just disregard the mSata ones, they're for laptops)

The Crucial can come in at a very decent price, around 50c/GB.  Try to get the m550 or m500 - altho I'm running older models and they're all good, too, I think the MX100 isn't too bad either, but I'd lie if I said I'm up to date on that one.  (I'm using old M4s in two computers, some are couple of years old now)

fyi, this is the way it looks when it comes at a very good price for a 550: eg https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/177925
You can't buy it that cheap locally, sadly.

And add to it;  a 2TB SSHD for a data drive, it's still much quicker than an old HDD, and it's far cheaper than an SSD
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=24834&cPath=344

Do replace all your drives, old drives can cause misc problems.

IMPORTANT: when installing the OS onto your new SSD   DO NOT put ANY other drives in!
If you do that, windows 7 will automatically put some crap on it that'll prevent you running the system w/o the 2nd drive in. (dunno about win 8, but better be safe)

I had a few teething probs with my 970 but set it up looking on forums etc after last nights race and have to say it looks beautiful now...I just got a new PC and with ssd wow...I'm running a i5 k and just clocked it to 4.3 MHz not getting hot stable...very impressed with my new machine aktho my old i7 1366 was unbeatable with water cooling etc..shame the board died otherwise I'd still be using her :(  Grants on the new PC simone.
