AC server browser android app
« on: July 19, 2015, 10:52:35 PM »
Following on from Guybrush's suggestion to have a quick way of seeing who's online, I've made a start on an Android app to do just that. This is where it's at so far - the beginnings. There's still quite a way to go. I want to add more information, let you expand a row to see who's actually online, let you search for servers... maybe get notifications when someone comes online on a server you're watching (maybe - that seems a bit difficult so far, but I haven't started unravelling that one).

If you have any suggestions or wishlist items, let me know.

Very cool!
Do I need to send you an old iPhone so you can do the same for Apple?  ;D

I can send you an old Android, it's probably better than your iDevice  ;)

If you are prepared to run VMWare I can show you how to load a virtual Mac... works well as I have to support Mac users these days as well.

The joys of being the "friend in IT"

I have a SG4 collecting dust that I was going to use as a dash for AC, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

For phone use I'm an iPhone user at preset... and happy with it  :P

I've done that in the virtual Mac thing in the past... but Apple development is a totally alien language to me. At least Android apps are written in Java.

These are the things I would use, but may not be possible:

*  Add servers to a watched list
*  Set alert when more than "x" people are in any of your watched servers
*  Add drivers to a friends list and set alert for when they are in a server
*  Be able to see where friends are - which server.
*  Be able to filter for ping less than "x" (this may not be possible as the phone wouldn't ping the server would it?)
*  Sort by ping / players.
*  Be able to set when alerts are given - ie. between 7pm and 9pm each work day and 9am and 10pm on a weekend, etc.

Dunno about the ping. The lobby reports the server country, but we've seen that can be misleading.

The rest is probably doable. Anyway, baby steps... I'll keep tinkering, refining, extending.

Yeah, I sort of figured if you could do a multi-country server search, such as Aus, US, NZ, Indo, etc. you could effectively filter for ping?  Maybe there could also be a list of pre-set countries for those in certain regions, so European countries, Asian, Americas, etc that people could select instead of typing them all in.

Progress shot:

Shows cars, track, session, pickup or booked, password protected servers.

Good stuff Wally. I assume any kind of notification on players would be a bit difficult because you have to query each server to get a player list? Maybe could have the option for the user to shortlist servers they want player notifications for, that way could just do all XGN/Marty servers etc.

It could poll all the servers on the background, but that would be pretty heavy. An alert on just favourite servers would probably be feasible. It might drain your battery!

Another idea which probably isn't probable.

Would be good if you could "pre-commit" to a server using the app.  So say that you'd be keen to race on such and such a server and then you go off and tend to your bonsai tree, and then if enough people pre-commit it sends an alert and you can all jump on.  The pre-commit's could expire every 30 minutes or something?  Maybe only being able to Pre-commit to one server at a time?

Dunno.  Maybe it would be too difficult as you would need a database keeping all the information of who has and hasn't committed to what, and then have this info uploaded to the app.

Interesting idea. I'll keep it on mind.

Do you want a bonsai tree app as well?
