Title: S20R3: Thruxton
Post by: Wally on January 03, 2018, 07:40:02 AM
Staying in England, we move to the high speed circuit of Thruxton.

Jan 9: Thruxton (http://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/thruxton.6192/) + pit mod (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1y9QW7LW4x5PZgk5jjdLtA5j0Jsjhk4c0)  (3 x 14 laps)

A big thanks to Seanus for making the extra pits mod for us.

I've changed the practice server to start from 98% grip and to take tyre warmers off, so people can get a feel for the cold tyres.

Points change: After discussion after Oulton Park, race 1 will be worth double points. So race 1 will be worth as much as the following two reverse and progressive grid races.

You just drag the thruxton folder into \steamapps\common\assettocorsa\content\tracks.

I'll miss this round and the next regrettably, work and a family holiday. Might be able to squeeze in Thursday in between

Can I get some clarification on the last chicane as you can cut it prety hard and it doesn’t register as a track cut. My policy has always been two wheels on the track. You can gain heaps of time here if you cut it

In general, the principle is two wheel within the white lines at all times, and that's what PLP tries to enforce. But depending on the track surfaces (mod tracks in particular), the track might not define what's valid track or not very well. In this case, we should still aim to keep two wheels within the white lines through the chicane. You'd want to avoid that group of sausage kerbs there anyway.

So this is where I'm losing lap time to grat... 1. is through goodwood, and 2 is through church. Grat is slowing more for entry into goodwood and then able to carry more speed through church.

But you're also losing through the final chicane, suggesting Godzilla is into something.

I'm taking the final chicane quite honestly.

The problem with racing is that part of the job is to figure out the limits of the track. PLP encourages to look at it to figure them out. So if it does not get red, one keeps going on that line, even if it looks a bit too much... It is like that in real life too: plenty of examples of corners where the apex or the exit is not really policed, with the stewards having an attitude more like "if you can handle that big curb, then it's up to you". I think this is why Godzilla is asking for clarifications. As otherwise most of us will just do whatever PLP does not penalize. (hell, I got penalized in round 1 race 3 for avoiding other cars and crashes. I might as well take advantage of the system when I can ;))

Prety much, I’m losing a fair bit of time in that chicane trying to keep two wheels on track at all times, this affects your exit speed and next lap greatly. So is the consensus that if PLP does not see it as a cut then all’s fair?

On the way in the Green concrete is offtrack but on the exit its marked as Kerb and counted as ontrack.

I don't like track limits, and I left these as the author had, but we could change them.

I would not change it as then the rest of the track would become overly sensitive to minor incidents.

Well, like I said, the general rule that PLP is trying to enforce automatically is "two wheels within the white line". There's a clear white line in the chicane. If you want to drive "honestly", you should keep at least two wheels within the lines.

Guess that's the only practical way to deal with it...unless you want to spend hours on policing the whole race in retrospect. And how do you deal with borderline cases...watching slow motions from different angles!?

I'm just keen on figuring out the shortcut Dave O was using when doing his sector 3 time on his fastest lap.
Then it's just about adjusting my fuel load and I'm good for the race ;-)

It happens from time to time, pretty rarely really, with mod tracks. It won't get policed, but the expectation has been set.

Not sure I’d rely on honesty, not that people are dishonest as such but the urge to gain any advantage possible will simply be too great. Trying to police it would be WAY too hard so practically I think if PLP doesn’t count it as a cut then it’s probably best to leave it

What camber should I set the front and back wheels?
Title: Re: S20R3: Thruxton

Not sure if I'm the right one to answer this as I'm not the fastest. On the other hand the faster guys have done their times on higher grip levels.
However, I've done my fastest lap on -3.2 front/-1.1 rear.

Just had a look at my fastest lap on the stats   :o sector 1 lost about 20 seconds, sector 3 gain around 17 seconds ???  Got me beat?

You wouldn't gain 17 seconds if you completely straight lined the chicane. ?? Interesting  ::)

Last time I’ve seen this the person was using a different (older) version of the track with different sectors marked and the checksum on the server wasn’t working properly for some reason

Yeah, that could be it. This track has been updated over time.

The practice server is set to the midday race weather. The morning race is generally a little bit cooler. The afternoon race is usually about the same temp as the midday race, maybe plus or minus 1 degree.

I went searching for the practice server two days ago and I couldn't see it. I searched for empty servers starting with "xgn". I found one but I think it had monza and a different set of cars.

u know whats nuts, atm there are 1750 online servers

I found the server thx, I had to search for content I didn't have. Your map has extended pit or something Ill get that one now.

edit: On the season 20 sign up page you have a line with two links

Jan 9: Thruxton + pit mod  (3 x 14 laps)

When I click on the pit mod link I get a page can't be found error.

Hoping those fast time on the board are going straight through the chicane. 1:20.4 is the best I can do legally.

Funny thing is you are WAY faster through the chicane then me on my fastest, probably 17-18km faster... lol

My time is cheating the chicane, you can basically straight line it,  1.19.5 doing it properly

I’m being a bit liberal on the exit but no cutting I don’t believe. Can see my speed through there is slower then most by a good bit

Ahahah, Godzilla. You are right. I thought I was being quite liberal too, but it looks like most are flying through there compared to us.

Yeah, I though the same then I checked the speed charts there and found I’m 10-15km slower so done feel bad
