A couple of separate fun runs next Tuesday, both at at Riverside NASCAR [TRACK DOWNLOAD (http://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/riverside-international-raceway.9492/)], to try some of the old Porsches:
Race 1, Porsche 917/30 Spyder (16 laps, 20 mins)
Race 2, Porsche 935/78 "Moby Dick" (15 laps, 20 mins)
Weather, a balmy 26 degrees.

I was thinking of two single make races this time. Might as well get a bigger fiield racing together rather than splitting it in two.

I think the Spyder may be the toughest car I've driven in AC. Lots of crashes and blown engines ;D

I don't know what my pace is like on the 917, but I reckon it's great fun to drive. Insane speeds and I like how it can kick you if you're a bit hasty with the throttle in the lower gears.

I got a setup off the interwebs and was much quicker. Was on a 1.09 but got wobbly out of the last turn and ended up with a low 1.10

Here is a setup for the 917/30.. not mine so it should suit you guys fine, and I'm sure you can tweak it to your liking

Ran a few laps in the 917, fun car. Setup still needs work and I think theres a bit of time in it still as its so hard to get all the power down as needed. I went minimal aero tall gearing and softened the rear a bit coming from a setup I made for this at Nords, full boost wont last a race for sure so it will need to be managed a bit which is a good thing. Some sort of differential would be good but at 1500hp or whatever this can get at full boost I dont think any diff of that era would have lasted which is why it was made fairly solid. :)
Here is a lap in the 917/30 to show there isnt too much to be scared of in this beast. It just corners pretty slow so make sure you get to the apexes and be gentle on throttle even short shift as it has more power then you need out of slow corners even when running full boost and tall gearing.

In the warmup/practice, I'll have both cars available, so people can jump in and out of each car (12 of each car). Then race 1 will be everyone in the 917, and race 2 will be everyone in the Moby Dick.

I just remembered I likely wont be home in time for the races Tuesday, shame as they could be a bit of fun in these.
I ran a few laps in Moby tonight and think I prefer the 917 here. The 935 could do with 1 or 2 more gears being down on power a bit. It also seems to need even more patience through the esses but will likely be easier to race close with others. The 917 has so much power I cant see it needing more then 4 gears anywhere as you dont really want to be too high in rpm on exits to keep some control of the rear end.
Both cars I found no advantage in any rear wing or even the Guerney, it seems it adds a little rear traction but at sacrificing some speed and more understeer. Having it off and simply using less throttle gives more speed and equal traction so I went with that option. ;)

With the guerney flap it seems to work as mentioned in that link in game. However with these cars at this track the last thing you need is extra drag or more aero understeer. That is unless your aim is to go slower and make it harder for yourself. ;)
I was about .5 slower with the Guerney mostly due to the extra push in the esses and entry to the final turn. Exit out of last turn it was a slight gain but overall a fair loser. That was the 935 and I didnt do any real comparison in the 917 with it on or off. 917 was so much fun and quick enough without it that I wouldnt bother with it here.
Drag was not a big issue losing only .1 or so at the end of the back straight but it was also more pushy going flat into the left kink. Lifting there is fairly big loss and also it seemed to get me into full boost a bit too soon on some exits where it would then spin rears meaning it needed a big lift well after the apex and thats never ideal.
I would rather feed power a bit smoother and get full power with front wheels as straight as possible so wheelspin is not an issue as the boost kicks in.
Maybe some extra patience on exits it could be closer to min aero no guerney lap times but in a race at this track id prefer as much speed as possible and take out as much aero push as possible in the couple corners that matter assuning I wanted to be as quick as possible and be able to pass cars if needed.

You just have to lower your expectations about stopping in a hurry, and brake earlier :)

When you try to do the right thing but the ripple strip has other ideas..
RussG had come off and I decided I'd go wide to the right to let him back on and I'd pass without a problem. But then I hit that ripple strip and it speared me back to the left and my rear end got a lil loose. I rear ended him and went underneath his car lifting him up, I slid sideways underneath him and threw him back off the track and I managed to continue on with a dark orange front splitter but no other damage..

Was way off the pace. Last week practising was doing .09s and nearly .08s but then didnt drive the car since, drove some other cars then jumped cold into qually.
Started to pick up some pace eventually and hoped with 6 laps left I may have been able to close on wally but dropped it into 2nd too heavy at the end of the back straight sending me sideways into the last corner and couldn't hold it.
Dropped out for 2nd race. Too many presents still to wrap for the kids!

Missed the night which is a shame as I enjoyed these cars in the bit of practice I had during the week and nice to drive some proper challenging cars for once.

I had so much fun driving these cars! I did run out of fuel in the first race, which was a shame but I didn't run enough laps to predict the fuel usage. I love the mongrel in the 917/30 and the 935/78 was still fun albeit numb in the front end (maybe some setup would help this car).
I hadn't had a great deal of time behind the wheel before tonight but a little more time to get used to the beast and I think these things would provide great/chaotic racing.
The big question is... When are we going to make a season of them? :D

After probably too many practice laps during the week the races went very well. Never managed match my PB's sadly.
Race 1 drove behind/between Phil and Bacchulum. I was faster in the twisty bits while they were faster in the straight. Don't think I deserve the place Phil but thanks ;D
Race 2 was a bit more relaxed. Tried to keep a flying Kcender in sight (down the loooonngg straight) which sort of work till I got mixed up with lapped cars. Not a lot of easy passing places at Riverside.

Good times guys - was lucky this week - these old sheds seem to sit well with me for some reason - great to have them moving around underneath you. How the hell any mortal drove these in period (especially the 917/30) is beyond me - was ballast provided by ball size? :P

You had to concentrate, that's for sure. In the 917, I ended up in a little gap on track with no one to really race with, which might have been just as well.
I did have some little shenanigans with Phil in the Moby Dick though, after he had an accident of some sort and had to re-pass me, which was fun. And then Keith put great pressure in my rear view mirror in the closing laps, and finished only 0.02 behind me in a sprint to the finish line.
I can almost envisage a Moby Dick season, but I think the difficulty of the car would put a lot of people off. Last night's turnout was pretty small. I know a few people were away, but that probably indicates the general lack of enthusiasm for these harder cars.

Couldn't match Kcender in the Spyder but had a great battle with Phil & Mael.
I used a speedway (bikes) trick in Moby at the start.
Feathered the clutch to stop it bogging down and jumped from last to third. ;D
Somehow managed to hold that position until my 'box packed it in, one lap short. :(

I think time of year had a big effect on low numbers. I would really enjoy cars like this for a season, it could even be a mixed class one with either 917 or 935 and maybe the old 911 rsr ir similar old slower simpler car. People could choose one or the other with no forced option to switch so people wouldnt be stuck in a car they may not like or be able to drive.
