Third server?
« on: October 09, 2020, 09:13:13 PM »
Time wise could the current instance being used for Thursday's races and for Tuesday's practice server afford to run a third server for these hotlap challenges?
The likelihood of more than one server being used at any particular time is pretty low.

With s/p tracker each Challenge could have its results live in its thread, also saves us having to utilize Steam friends.

I remember Phil saying it is a very small instance server and extra data charges are about $10/month, which Phil is paying, any more load I imagine would only increase extra data charges. I think this information is correct.

That makes sense, so rather than load that instance anymore I could start up one on my Google account. Will look into it.

The smallest AWS instance is free for the first year (well, it used to be. May still be the case).

If that is still the case, I can offer my details for a year.
Just as long as I don't get an unexpected bill in the future, as my budget is already maxed out weekly.

Already ran an AWS and a Google server for a free year each.
Just had a look at Google and I can't make head nor tails of it.
Windows servers are free but they charge for them?
The smallest machines (t2.micro equivalent) can't run Windows?
Just so Damn freaking esoteric.  :o

Sounds more like a server you would turn on for a nights racing and then shutdown for the remainder rather than a 24hr version.

It is the smallest server you can get and it runs Tuesday Practice and Thursdays.

I have been meaning to ask is anyone interested in taking over ownership of the server and the payments, which come in at around 7 - 10 dollars a month

I dont really care if no one does and and am more than happy to keep paying the monthly fee,  I just feel that I should check as seanus and roo are doing all the work they might like it out of my name and in theirs.

If you want to let me know and I will fill out the AWS form for change of ownership,  if not I will leave it as is  8) ;D :D

It might run a third as long as all are not used at once,  I know it runs Thursday races with a few people on the Tuesday server at the same time ok, probably would cost a little more in data, but not much I dont reckon

Phil - how much data are we talking about? I'd be happy to look at taking over the host or even hosting locally .... (100/100).

I am reluctant to take over ownership Phil as it is a monthly reminder for you to return to at least Thursday nights racing  ;D.
plus I am not keen on giving up the current server instance as it has been trouble free for several years now.
Thanks for very kind offer AB , but I would prefer to stay with the current setup.
To this end I will forward some money Phil to cover all data costs for the current, and any additional cost of running a third server.

100/100. That hadn't occurred to me, I have an always on system that I could run a Hotlap and testing server on. Only on home NBN myself with a practical speed of 30/20 with not great reliability either, so no good for a race server but should work for the above.

I'll whip up a couple and see how it goes. One for Hoptlap and one for testing including running full CM CSP SOL.

This is what I am thinking, I have enough bits to build up a server far in excess of an EC2 instance that we could use for non"official" testing (hotlaps, CM stuff etc.).  Keep the proper stuff where it is.

I've booked some time on Thursday to set it up, I'll send you a PM and we can go from there.

You dont have to send me any money roo,  its nothing 10 or so bux a month,  I just wanted to be sure you didnt want to take it over.

AB, thanks for the offer, but maybe just leave it as it is
its not a lot, I have just been looking at the bill and last 2 months have only been about $7 or 8 each.
the biggest cost seems to come from storage
$0.12 per GB-month of General Purpose SSD (gp2) provisioned storage - Asia Pacific (Sydney)30.000002 GB-Mo$3.60

Data costs like less the $1
Bandwidth$0.98
$0.000 per GB - data transfer in per month3.997 GB$0.00
$0.000 per GB - first 1 GB of data transferred out per month1.000 GB$0.00
$0.010 per GB - regional data transfer - in/out/between EC2 AZs or using elastic IPs or ELB0.000000120 GB$0.00
$0.114 per GB - first 10 TB / month data transfer out beyond the global free tier8.622 GB$0.98

I think just leave it as is and I should never have said anything lol :D

No worries Phil but I think AB should set up a dedicated box as an adjunct to our currently working setup. For things like testing troubleshooting hotlaps and what not.
With the NBN, if you happen to live in the right area, we have more than enough domestic bandwidth.
Much like myself I think AB has some left over hardware that can be stuck in a cupboard somewhere, and I dare say more than the one GB of ram that EC2 uses.

I could do the same but my version of the NBN is not what we were promised so if AB is both willing and able then I'd be very glad to take him up on this offer.

 ;)
