Cool, this time I've seen the mention of the car swap  ;D
Time to get my GX on... was getting spoilt with the ABC and after last race the TC as well.

Ive put up a practice server, this time its also set to slow grip level seeing practicing at 100% is a bit pointless. Weather is set to the forecast with fairly cold temps and forecast also has possible rain.

Wally has server access too now so he can change this up to match more with his weather forecast

In a real quick, full fuel test, I was 2:05.x in the GTC. But that was only a few laps to calculate the fuel burn.

He took me through how to change up the other servers.

I've set up the practice server with a couple of weather conditions that the forecast is pointing to, both damp.

Wally I think you might need to increase the track temp.  One of the settings had it at 14 degrees.  Even with a setup that put as much heat into the tyres as possible and driving to it, graining was at 20% after 2 laps (GX).  Either the track temps don't normally get that low or AC doesn't simulate tyre temp/graining very well when track temps are low.

I just checked the server config, and the two track temps are either 14 or 25, so I don't know where that zero came from.

I'll take the graining into account, GB.
Stupid graining.... *Homer Simpson voice off*

air and track were def zero - I was very hungover but pretty confident it was zero on both.
Title: Re: S8R4: Nurburgring GP pre-race chat
Post by: Guybrush Threepwood on August 30, 2015, 01:43:48 PM
Yeah, Grat and I skipped to a race and it was 0 degrees.  Not sure if this was just an issue with the read outs and it was actually more... we skipped straight to qual anyway so didn't get to try.

I'm not sure if it's the low temp or the low grip that is causing all the graining.  Obviously low temp causes graining but I think low grip is like a multiplier.  I guess that's the issue at the moment trying to simulate wet weather - in real life the grip is lower but the friction is also a lot less due to the water so the track isn't as abrasive on the tyres, where as in AC you are sliding (even when you think you aren't) but the track is still shredding your tyres.  There is no lubricant.

Is there a graining app or something you can load up to see this graining happening?

I'm still unsure about that part of the tire black magic happening...

You can see it in the built in ”physics” app.

I think within the weather settings there is some randomness with temps you can set but I cant imagine it being 0 from 14 or 25 so its an odd one.

I didnt end up bringing my laptop but may get another in tokyo over the weekend. So server stuff will be all down to Guybrush and Wally but im sure they can more then handle it.
Title: Re: S8R4: Nurburgring GP pre-race chat
Post by: Wally on August 30, 2015, 07:48:53 PM
In the last couple of wet rounds, I couldn't flatspot the GX tyres, but it was a bit warmer. So in general, the low grip might not wear the tyres all that much.

Talking about you servers how does minorating work? I've only ever seen it pop up to say I'm grade C but the only server with people on right now is grade A and B only so I can't join. Kinda sucks. I'll just do hotlaps on my own...  :(

To get to a or b you need to run a certain distance close to others to move up from A. So if most laps are ran in the practice server not very close to others you may not be able to get your rating up to a or b.

I did a couple of races on the "get your minorating" server that is overseas. Got hit by  warping car on 1st lap but still finished the 5 map race. Then got hit from behind on lap 1 in a 2nd race. Minirating now up to B :D

Take a look at Tuesday's weather forecast in the first post. At this stage, race 1 is cold and damp; race 2 is dry. That's part of the fun of using the real weather - you don't know exactly what you're going to get until race day.

Also look at their track temp chart. Yes, track temp can be around 15 degrees in real life. Maybe you'll have to use harder tyres. Do you want to see what the  graining is like on hards with a very cold track?
Title: Re: S8R4: Nurburgring GP pre-race chat
Post by: Guybrush Threepwood on August 31, 2015, 10:59:06 AM
I think the hard tyres may be worse as they will be colder. Anyway, all good as it's the same for everyone (in the GX anyway).  Just wanted to be sure I'm creating a setup for those conditions in mind.

To get a minorating running laps on the practice server should get you started and if there are others you drive close to for a couple races this should be able to get you to a or b. Also there is one of my servers that is for a b c d n, with n being unrated so anyone but a w (wrecker) rated driver should be able to get into it.

With the track temps I found hards pretty useless at colder temps due to them running cooler and graining more then the medium tyres.

Hi guys,

the server got stuck at 0C for both air and track temp. I was there with rob and we tried to skip a few times and restart a few times more, but we were always getting 0C. Something seems to have gone wrong. Of course, in my immense ignorance, I have no idea about what it might be, but hopefully you guys can figure it out at some point.

Cheers!

Can anyone tell me what might be causing this in the GTC.

Usually I am OK at not having the backend spin out and with TC enabled its even easier but it seems that on two corners I have this weird behaviour when I trail brake a bit more then normal. If I go into ford curve or bit curve (i hope i have the names right) my backend spins me around 180 degrees.

I've tried a few different setups and some don't seem to do it as much but I can't figure out what would cause it. Is it the diff power and the other setting that cause this? Brake balance?

Monday night and I haven't managed to get even five laps in without spinning out on one of these two corners. Help!  :-[

Have you changed the setup at all Phil? I've done a few laps on a couple of different nights with the default setup and haven't noticed this issue. I've turned the TC off as it was annoying. I got used to not having it in the GX, though the ABS is noice!

This is my setup here, I've been trying all sorts of setups with TC enabled or diabled. I tend to leave ABS on because I lock up too easy when its off.

It could be a combination of the tyres not getting hot enough and rear graining.  Turn on the physics app and check the "Grain R" value - it's a percentage between 0 and 100 (as most percentages are!).

Check ride height isn't too low and decrease the rear ARB, soften rear springs and put more negative camber on the rear.  Also lower the rear tyre pressures, especially for the cold.

As of right now, the forecast for 10am Tuesday is "pissing down", so I've set the practice server to that.
13:00 is looking 14 degrees and damp.

The GTC is about 2.5 seconds a lap faster in the wet conditions, and it's tyres grain about half as much.  Now to find a way to sneak into a GTC without Wally seeing me.

This is what Minolin - guy that created Minorating - said about the join warps:

" In your case the problem is that you have a ping around 300 or 350 to the MR server, so it doesn't matter if the real doing can be handled in 15 or 16ms. Didn't think of that - of course non european servers could still have problems with that. Let me think about that. Maybe we need to cache the driver data locally earlier than I thought, but this also comes with some serious server admin setup fees that I would like to dodge."

Yeah I just had a run on the praccy server, it's extremely slippery!!  :(
And I see what GB is gettin at, with all that slipping around just eating your tyres up (sliding in the wet but registering as dry weather wear), 2 and 1/2 laps on softs took me to 86...
hmmm
At least hards seem to go further, maybe because they never heat up, getting my skates out!!  :o

Maybe I'll set the tyre wear to half the rate in the longer race - i.e. 2.1x.

Yeah last night the practice server was bordering on not fun at all...

I jumped on and saw Phill.8 do a 2.31 and thought ah must have just come out of pits...

Best I could do was a 2.29, but averaged 2.31 (in the GX)

If we have the same conditions today as we did last night it would be a battle of "Driving Miss Daisy"  :o

I will pray to the digital weather gods that the track dries up... or AC supplies wet weather tires  :P

I think it will be worth a run to see how it goes.  I didn't mind so much the slipperiness although it was a bit slow and boring without others around me, but should be more fun in the pack.

My worry is everyone in the GX locking up into T1 as you only have to breath on the brakes and they lock with such low grip.  So I'd encourage everyone to do a few practice starts.  :)

Conditions in the server right now are fine, Wally. It is slow, yes, and front tyres really stay cold. But it is drivable and tyres still have some grip towards the end of the 8 laps we need... Thank you.

Now you've got me intrigued Marty... we are in Tokyo tonight for a one night stopover on our way to Paris then Venice. Where exactly are you in Japan? It was hot and humid when we landed this afternoon.
