I know this is covered a few times but just got a bonus from my boss for working obscene amount of hours in the last few weeks with instructions to buy myself a VR headset for my online racing. Since I only spend race nights in my sim usually I am looking at the value of getting the Occulus rift vs one of the cheaper headsets. If I get a cheaper headset, I can also get the wheel and shifter for my clubsport wheel project but I am reasonably happy with my TS300 GT for now except for the horrible brake pedal feel.
My budget at the moment is $750 and the only sims I use right now is AC and on the rare occasion, Kart Racing Pro.

Thanks Rooshooter.
I opted to get the occulus rift S. I figured the lower resolutions would be easier on my hardware giving me a little margin and the games that have the specific support built in will hopefully give better performance.
Thanks again and can't wait to get it and test it out.

Rift S sounds good , let us know what you think after a good shakedown :).

I got the rift on Thursday and only just set it up. The Occulus VR works fine but have only managed to run AC on the virtual desktop so far. Not what I was hoping for but will keep working on it.

Just got it sorted and I f*&^ing love it. I can see the apexes and after 10 laps have met me previous best times but a lot more consistent. Being that I am only running an R9 380, it gets a little dicey on fast changes of direction so a good used rx 580 might be on the cards. Might even find a second one down the track and crossfire them.
Its just a completely new experience and I can't wait to spend more time in the rig now

I agree it is amazing, but you really need to run at at least 80FPS , an upgrade of your GPU will be next. Enjoy the experience :) :) 8) 8).

Was hovering around 45 fps on low to med settings so need to do something. Looking at upgrades now and that should help.
-
The refresh rate on most headsets is 90hz so ideally you want to be minimum 90fps for the smoothest experience.
-
I've had to turn down a lot on my system but have just installed the rx580 and will see how it goes. I will test running the screen from a basic secondary card to take some more load off the main card. I have an old card floating around somewhere. the system may get a bit hot with the 380 and 580 in it

Your wait may be over Dave O ;D but it is WMR so tracking is not perfect.

Yeah been watching the Reverb very closely and looks pretty good, will be a while before it's available here though.
Also very interested in what the specs and price will be on the Vive Cosmos when it's released. 2080ti might be on the horizon ;) 8)

Go into the Oculus Debug Tool and disable ASW. I suffered from 45-48fps but now with some tweaking with content manager and disabling ASW running a fine and dandy 89fps. That 45fps was after upgrading the graphics card to a RX5700 8mb as well which almost made me cry. However with perseverance and much scrolling of the interweb I found some helpful info and got the desired FPS.
I must say though if you like AC in VR, you have to get Dirt Rally and give that a whirl. it'll blow your f'ing mind but I will warn you, you might end up with some severe motion sickness. I had to stop after doing a quarter of a stage the first time I played in VR.....

I can't wait any longer, ordered one of these today. A Christmas present to myself ;D.

Good on ya Roo ;) very interested to see how you find it. Did you order from HP Australia direct? They had for $999-00 best price I've seen.
Hope all goes well, looks pretty good I reckon. ;)

Yes, it will be very interesting to hear what you think of it.

Ordered from this site https://www.skycomp.com.au/ one of the few sites to have stock. Ticked the boxes for me, WMR/Steam VR (which I am completely happy with) Flip up Visor and high res screens :).
-
Not a bad price either Roo and in stock is good. I think first week in January from HP. I'm pretty sure they don't have a flip up ability though.

Arrived today, 5 mins to setup :) amazing :o :o :o better than I expected crystal clear ,screen door effect not visible as such (more of a very faint smearing effect IF you look for it) not an issue and I am comparing it to a 55 inch 4K screen. Wider FOV but only slightly. Downside is, it is sweaty and a bit uncomfortable compared to my Lenovo, but these are issues that will be easily fixed as I did with my Lenovo.
Summary is, worth every cent, the future is here for VR fans :) :) :) :)
-
Having spent a bit more time with the Reverb , I have adjusted for loose fitting(not as sweaty now) and easy to remove, added some padding(more comfortable). My Inter Pupil Distance is 61mm and I have found this headset to have a VERY large focus sweetspot and constant adjustment of the fitting is not required. The connecting cable is heavy and really needs some form of support to take some weight off the headset(I have found a solution so not a problem). Has attached earphones and inbuilt mic (no more headphones for Discord :) :)).
ANY downsides to this device are FAR outweighed by the near perfect visuals (I am running an effective resolution of 8K x 4K, 200% supersample, 2080ti ). I will test at lower res to see what effect it has, if any.
These thoughts are for sit down VR games only, I do not use the Bluetooth controllers at all.

Sounds good, I have been thinking of getting VR of late and these seem good

I agree almost 100% with this review ,except that AC clarity for me, is better.

My Reverb Pro headset has failed, with the displays going black intermittently , finally managed to speak to someone in HP Support and they are going to replace it :). The worst support system on the planet, they do not have a simple email address you can use to contact them >:( >:( >:( what a joke.
-
Gee not good Roo :( I thought they'd fixed the black screen problems... obviously not >:( here's hoping replacement is better.
At least it failed while you still had warranty.

Most electronic equipment will fail very early in use ,if it is going to fail. A google search did not show that V2 of this headset is having problems so I may have just been unlucky. I still consider this VR headset as the best simracing piece of equipment that I have purchased. I will use the Lenovo until the new arrives. :)

Update to my VR headset problem. Josh from HP visited my home with a new headset but it was not the problem. The cable connecting the headset to the PC was the problem and a replacement has been ordered :).
-
Home visit :o now that's something else ;) How long for the new cable, and have they improved it?

Sadly the problem with the cable was my fault :'(.

HP Reverb Pro G2 preview an update of the Reverb Pro that I am using.

G2 is looking good Roo. Interesting the comparison to the Index they made. :P

It is interesting that HP never intended the Reverb Pro as a Sim headset and now the pre-order system is being used to make sure there is enough stock to meet demand, I believe this is a serious attempt to make VR more mainstream. I have never experienced the Mura or Red colour smear that some people have complained about.
My replacement cable was delivered by Josh at 5pm yesterday :).
I am deffo going to visit one of these centres when they re-open, they use the Reverb Pro with a backpack PC 8)
