Title: New server - AUS-www.xgn.com.au-THU-NIGHTS
Post by: Wally on May 22, 2014, 11:51:36 PM
Guys, I'm trying the most basic, free Amazon cloud hosted server. The server name is AUS-www.xgn.com.au-THU-NIGHTS (http://www.xgn.com.au-THU-NIGHTS).
It's in a book/qual/race cycle. Jump on in numbers whenever you can, and let me know how it performs.
There's always the option to scale up to a bigger server, but let's see how this basic, free solution performs.

You can see where the server's up to by clicking here (http://54.79.103.88:8075/ENTRY).

Nice!  We can even leave this running all the time, and fire up a bigger one for the races - I've a hunch this won't be able to cope with 20ppl :)
Hell, even windoze may throw a backflip at the low amount of memory available.

p.s.
You got there pretty quick, that's nice - only 12:15 for the last edit! ;)

Thanks for burning the midnight oil Wally.

Good work, I noticed as I write this there are 2 users on the server... will drop in tonight for a few laps... is this a 'micro' instance?
Certainly the first race I was in, the server behaved very well, even it is an overkill, if the instance is only running on race night, with a practice server on a  lighter on running either 24/7 or prescribed hours, it will be cheaper than other servers we have had, with the exception of Wally's NetKar pro.

don't forget that you only get the micro instance free under these conditions:
- new AWS accounts (one year limit)
- only ONE micro instance at a time
- also, only certain instance images, but this is irrelevant here I think, we don't want to run anything crazy

edit: although, it still only costs $15/mo to run a micro "on demand" server, but if we plan to do it all-year-round, it's better to get a "reserved" instance.   It roughly halves the price with a one-year heavy reserved instance (in this case, to $6.70).

Along these lines, we could get a 3-year reserved instance, of m.medium (the 3.7GB one) one-off upfront payment of $370, and then $18.30/mo.
That's effectively $28.5/mo.

Why don't we just fire up a bigger race server on race nights for roughly a buck an hour, rather than a long term permanent server? That's what I was thinking.

I'm going to try to jump on tonight, 8-ish for some laps on the micro server. Let's see if we can get a few people on it and see how the micro copes.

Yeah, just exploring the potential setups and their costs...:)
I'll try to make it tonight.

We'll see how the free micro server stacks up, then we'll see what's what. It won't be expensive however we slice it, I think.

Hi all.
Just signed up, look forward to racing against everyone.  Just wish that you could join during practice or qual so I don't have to wait so long to get onto the server :)
Cheers.

we're testing the server currently - try to catch it during booking, there's a good 10-12 ppl on every time.
You can also come on TS - easier to find out when to join :)

Will do when I can figure out all this new technology.  I'm new to it all but I'll try to stay out of everyone's way!

Regarding the server Id be glad to pitch in a little for the costs and would also like a basic noob quide to what is needed to setup and run a free server if I wanted to set one up too. To give access to one on days where wally isnt around and theres a few guys around wanting to race somewhere.

The costs are only a few bucks a month, so thanks, but no need to worry about it. When I'm bored one day, I'll write up how you can set up a free server using Amazon Web Services (which Bird put me onto) - like our Fun and Practice servers.
Title: Re: New server - AUS-www.xgn.com.au-THU-NIGHTS
Post by: Bird on July 16, 2014, 09:05:21 AM
In a nutshell:
you sign up to Amazon, you get a year free of a micro instance
go to amazon ec2 (elastic computing cloud) control panel
start a micro instance windows server (your choice just make sure it's eligible for the free tier)
copy the server files up, start it
allow traffic(!) for the server and switch off the windows firewall(!!)

voila.

ps there are pretty good manuals on Amazon, and with he help of a few google searches it's all solvable.

'Somewhere' you mean Nords right?  :D

Wouldn't mind seeing a server with Nords with a few different cars to choose from. 3-4 of each car.

That would be a fun practice server I think.

I was thinking more like the last few nites a few have been a few of us on wanting to race something different. Had to stick to whats already set and we raced already or go to other public servers but hard to find one booking with a nice combo and low ping.

Having acces to a server just makes it easy to setup anything and id probably leave it on allnother times for some nords running.  ;)

I think if you guys ask us nicely we might be able to help you out with the initial setup - either Wally or me.
But you need to register for an amazon acc first.
And get familiar with RDP if you haven't used it (remote desktop) and maybe read up on server setups (you can practice running a server locally)

In fact you could run an ad-hoc server on those nights locally, if you have a decent 'net connection.

Mainly cause we would fall asleep down the start finish straight!. Nah would be fun to race them anywhere. need that drafting though first i'd say.

Old Monza is all about the Cobras atm.. I think there are a few of us from here on RSR

Does the windows AC server work OK on a t1.micro free instance? I tried setting one up but yeh, ping was around 200 compared to the normal 20-40, am I doing something wrong? With freejoin I kept getting cpu errors.

I've got a powerful linux VPS but the linux server uses too much CPU, with freejoin it's even worse and makes the server crash after a random amount of time.

Our Practice and Fun servers are on t1.micro instances, and we've had about 16 racers on them without any dramas. The Race server is a c3.large (more CPU, more network). But the t1.micro (Windows) was generally pretty good, with low pings. Is your instance based in Sydney?

If it makes any difference, I'm running Windows 2008 R2. Maybe 2012 needs more grunt?

OK I'm going to give winblows 2003 R2 a go on a new t2,micro instance... get's a bit more grunt than the older t1,.micro instance.. will see how I go...

Well, an update on this. Seems to be running very well on the t2 micro instance with 2003 server. Not sure how it would handle many connections, but freejoin isn't complaining or using too much cpu or mem. If I'm doing something on the server, such as installing updates etc.. it will cause cpu errors but apart from that all good.

I expect for a small grid of <10 it would run OK...

I can post a quick guide tonight for anyone that's interested in hosting their own servers at amazon. I think there was Marty? interested in giving it a go and asking for a quick tutorial?

Cool.

I'm sure Wally knows a lot more than me but I'm just going to go over the basics, if there's any errors, I'm sure he can point them out, please do so mate :)

I'm making a screencapture video of the steps to setup the server and will upload to youtube along with some written instructions.

I'm just going to go over creating an AWS account, creating the free tier EC2 instance, getting started with remote desktop, installing the AC server, python and freejoin. Configuring the AC server and Freejoin won't be covered in detail, I'll just fire the server up to see expected output.

It's best to have a read of the AC forums and maybe start a dedicated server game hosting thread on here for people to share configs and maybe config files...

I was just thinking that it might be an idea to try Gentrack1 if tomorrow night is going ahead.  It's a scratch-made track for AC, not a conversion, and is a very fun, fast, country road style track.  I know the guy who made it has put a lot of effort into it just by keeping an eye on the forums.

The other one worth a look is Longford 67(?) - but this has only recently been released so may still need some polish.

On my server I have put up all 3 at Imola atm 5 of each, I turned on flow control to see if its still broken. I really like the s1 at Silverstone short but I have too much fun just drifting around a lap to really set a time. Havent tried that one at Tsakuba yet we had the SC the other nite and it was a bit of a handful but still fun. Good combination for a larger field, maybe for next week I recommend the Robbins youd be amazed how much fun they can be and most weve had online was about 5 maniacs so a few more should be even funnier.

Just tried the server and it just hangs on loading, needed to CTRL-ALT-DEL then task manager to get out. Happened twice. Possibly grid number issue as track has 18 spots. I have set up servers there with 15 an no issues, capping at 15 as cars started warping when 16-18 joined and thats with flow control off.

I should be able to make tonight, Melbourne is at its best today and somehow supposed to get even worse overnight so cant imagine Tennis being on. Actually just got called by the other team and not only are their courts flooded but a few big trees fell right on top of the clubhouse and courts.

Can anyone tell me why my RSR Live timing doesnt work.  I have it showing in game and it says "Connecting to server" or something and never moves from that.  I have my profile on the web site with Name/Country etc.  Gave the .exe file admin rights, but still nothing.

At a guess, do you need to update to a newer version of the app?

Also worth trying to turn on Penalties in SP mode as these need to be on for some odd reason for RSR to work for me.

I have thrown out the earlier version and have 2.0.015.
Penalties are on and all I get is this screen shot "No Connection".
Its never worked for me..

Could it be something to do with your rsr profile?

Can you login to RSR using Steam from the launcher screen?

Hi Freezer, Is it just the xgn severs you are trying it on? I'm guessing you are trying RSR in a few other game modes. For me lately it has been a bit iffy on the xgn servers as far as connecting.

You say it has never worked though?
Have you tried flashing your lights?
