News / Re: Forum upgrade

So they let it happen to screw you out of dollars? >:(

Huh?  No.

This is running on a normal instance - a t2.micro one.  However, a normal server does not have the infrastructure to apply geoblocking.  For that you need a VPN, a load balancer, and an AWS firewall with geoblocking rules set up.   All this is ok for commercial applications, however it's a massive extra cost on a little community server like this.

For now all I could think of is to bump up the server to a t2.small, which does double the cost, but still nowhere near as bad as all the extra infrastructure would be.  (the monthly cost goes from $10US to $20US)

TBH it maybe an idea to tune Apache & mysql a bit, so instead of flopping it'd just reject requests, but it's all time, time, time to play around with these.   Anyway, I'll try and do it at some point.

For now, blame the friggen script kiddies who run their botnets looking for easy hacks.

Thanks Bird. The bots were out of control. Luckily not many of them managed to actually post anything. I kill bot posts pretty quickly and remove the accounts anyway.

Annoying thing is I could geo-block overseas requests, that'd reduce the numbers significantly, but it multiplies the server cost, as it requires a step up in the aws infrastructure. :(

News / Forum upgrade
« on: October 17, 2020, 05:42:48 PM »
Gents I've upgraded the forum to the latest.

However some of the mods were quite out of date so they could not be reinstalled.

One of these things it seems was the youtube tags - so just put your youtube link into the post and it should be replaced.   One thing; the shorthand url (youtu.be) does not work with a start time, so for that you need to use the full url format.

The recent outages it seems were caused by bots/crawlers overloading the server, hopefully the upgrade helps with that.

Yeah, we had a few problems which I can't pinpoint yet, potentially simply overloaded with bots/crawlers.

Then I've decided it'd be good to update since we were behind by a couple of versions, and that has been successful, but the youtube tags are no longer working, and blast me if I know what was doing it before.
Potentially one of the mods that are quite dead now.

Sorry.

Advice on videos:

The video embed is not working via youtube tags, just post the url like this (without the spaces)
https: // youtu.be / S4aUtzNLyBg
or
https: // www.youtube.com / watch?v=S4aUtzNLyBg

And you get this:

And you're getting old too :D

I reckon that merc would be the only one that you can actually live with.
I'm getting old... :/

My business partner has a lotus exige, upgraded the supercharger recently, it's a total nutcase car now, a proper track monster.
But it's a rather uncomfortable, noisy, tiny-tiny car to live with.   Even just getting in and out is a friggen exercise. :)

900kgs and ~200kW at the wheels is fun.  And it revs madly, so you step on it in 2nd and you're past all speed limits of australia in 3 seconds.

I still don't want one.

Assetto Corsa / Re: Need help port forwarding Ac server at home ?
« on: September 25, 2020, 02:38:05 PM »
You might need a static internal IP for the server (don't allow dhcp to assign it just anything) & a "port forwarding" for the incoming traffic, routed to the server.
The router needs to know what to do with requests coming to a certain port, otherwise it can only route 'responses', not direct requests.

I've set my local servers up by dividing the used IP range up. i.e. restricting the DHCP allowed addresses to a restricted set only (200-255 iirc on the last segment), and so I can use anything outside of that for servers.

Apologies if you're way ahead of me, reading your post isn't quite clear on this point to me.

But it is possible that your ISP blocks certain (known server) ports, 80, 443, 21 - however it's also possible that something is hogging whatever port you need.  Worth checking both.

just my 2c; nothing wrong there, but hard head-to-head racing, with Volvo outbraking himself a couple of times.

Just wait.  We've waited years for such a card, we can wait a bit more, no?

Perfect VR with no "screen door effect"  and max graphics settings, is now a reality for roughly $2200, with a 3080 and  a HP Reverb Pro G2  ;D
$10/week = 220 weeks
Good to go for December 2024! ;D 8)

You have it all wrong, MMT - just go print some more money and spend away.  Works for Govt., why not the rest of us  ;)

AB for president!   Or at least El Presidente! :)

https://supertuxkart.net/

windows, linux, works everywhere,  moddable, multiplayer, what else do you need?

So when's the next tuxkart season start? :)

The Cranberries are somewhat underrated IMO.   I love to listen to their albums on Tidal.

I'll quietly note; I'm not a fan of concert recordings, I hate the extra noise and the wishy-washy recording quality :)
