Title: Oct 10 - "Rolex 24" enduro at Daytona
Post by: Wally on October 03, 2017, 11:07:51 PM
Next Tuesday will be a 2 hour endurance race at Daytona International Speedway (Road Course) [ download  (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6YBokXY5o8QV3JXejl3QXR2N28)]

Cars
Corvette C7R (with 50% restrictor)
Ferrari 458 GT2
BMW M3 GT2

No restrictions on tyres, no mandatory pit stops. Fuel rate will be 0.8x (so cars can go somewhere between 1h30 to 1h45 on one tank), to widen the pit window.

Qualifying
To save time on race night, qualifying will be done on the practice server over the coming week before the race. Post a time on the practice server, and that will be your qualifying time in your nominated car.

Qualifying times are here (http://52.63.217.129:50041/lapstat?currservers=acserver2). You have until Monday night (9th) to set a qualifying time and nominate a car.

Good track. Slow sections joined to fast blasts with some frightening chickens. Who's going to get the closest to those tire barriers?

BMW for me.

Although the '67 version probably exists in GPL.

The chicken (sic) tyre bundles in my version have no collision so feel free to blow straight through them, of course PLP will not be so forgiving to you doing so.
How hard is it to make them solid? I like the additional threat of destruction :)

Could we remove the non racecar themed skins from the server? I keep getting a white skin as I have removed the plain skins from my install.
I'll try...

Also getting a white bmw

I'll be choosing the bmw..

not that fond of the oval section of this track, it's definitely too small width wise, I can see some bad accidents because of it.

I think it's a good mix of oval and road circuit.

The vette's unpopular. I haven't really tested its tyre/fuel endurance - maybe it chews through them faster than the other two cars.

I think tyres are going to suffer here, but as I am planning on only running for a short period just to hear the sounds, I'll won't be afflicted by it.

I don't mind the mix, it's the unrealistically skinny banked corners I don't like. It's not even 2 lanes wide from what I can see.

Hey. I have never driven this track and I had no time to try it during the week. I'll see if I can manage to get a decent idea of it today (Sunday) and let you know. If I feel I am at least not dangerous, I'll ask you for a spot on Tuesday.

Looks like I should be able not to crash into all of you at the first turn (though reference points are fewer than on official tracks, I would say). I can take a Ferrari. Thank you.

I took down one notch both front and rear wings (ironically, because I saw you were faster on the straights, hahaha) and I added some front camber because I was understeering mid-corner on the slow infield hairpins. That gave me some hard time on exits, but overall was driveable and I left it as such. BUT I think your times were on mediums... my best time on mediums was 1.47.7, I think. So pretty much the same as you

The race server is a different server, so you'll be alright there. I'll look into the practice server after I set it up for next week.

No worries. One thing I've noticed is that late in the practice session as the sun goes down it becomes blinding in a couple of spots. With all graphics settings at maximum it is completely blinding and you can't see anything at all, which will most likely cause wrecks. I'm all for realism but I've never been completely blinded in a racing game before, usually you can still barely see a marker or two. Soo...I'm not sure if it's because it's a mod track or highest graphics settings, but anyone who doesn't want to get caught out can adjust their settings, not sure which one, either glare quality or crepuscular rays. Turn them off if you don't want to be in or cause a major wreck.

The game time will go from 8 am to 6 pm, so the sun will certainly change, yes, as in real life. The practicesession will probably get stuck on 6 pm for a while, but the race won't.

All good. Only making the suggestion so people don't get to within 15min of the end of the race and then wreck. To finish a 2hr race will be very rewarding, but to wipe out after 1.5hrs will be disappointing.
Changing those settings still gives you sun glare just not to the point where you can't see anything at all.

Also going to take this one off. My pedals have been on my dining room table for 2 days and they're a right pain to bolt back down and can't be bothered to do it today. Also meant I'd done no practice for this.

Did a 20lap race with ai on soft tyres & 50l fuel, front right and rears went into yellow towards the end. I did have a spin though, ai is so bargey through the chickens

Around the midway point I missed a braking point and decided to run wide at the chicane on purpose rather than risk a spin. As i went the wrong side of the tire barrier everything except the apps turned black, had to exit and re-join losing quite a bit of time.

Not that it mattered, the top three was to quick and consistent. Great driving Grat!

PS. Do you know how hard I drove to catch up to you Wally? I hoped to have at least one decent battle. And got nothing for my effort  :P

I know! I was looking forward to some action there too, but I spun too many times on the slow corners.

That was a good race, started on softs which let me race with grat & phil for a bit. Had a big lock up into turn 1 early on which gave me a good flat spot and a bit of wheel shake. Nursed it kinda but the tyres finally went and I needed fuel so pitted @ lap 26. I had intermediate tyres which I was hoping would last the final 40 or so laps which they did only just. Was pretty lonely for a while after that except when Wally and Robin let me by. By about lap 40 or so shayne started gaining and was hoping for a bit of close racing when he finally caught up. Ran wide on lap 53 which took the excitement out of that. At around 20min remaining I was almost going to suggest a simulated safety car just to bunch everyone up again (would not have benefited me, probably opposite). In the last few minutes my worn out intermediate tyres started to feel a little better, briefly, I got a little over excited and spun at the bus stop feeding my front bumper to the chickens. Cracked windscreen and no front aero I managed to limp home in third.
Thanks everyone for another great race night. ☺️

I had a spin on lap 1 after Jamie and I were side by side on the oval, and then sorted ourselves out in the bus stop with him in front, but it must have put me a little off line because I spun to the left onto the slippery grass and list a few spots. Layer I had too many spins in the very slowest corners with the back just wanting to come around too much when I came off the throttle.

After my dropout half way through when I rejoined it was hard to tell what position I was in. Both my apps ptracker and real-time had me last so I just let whoever was behind me past, like Rob and Russ, but in hindsight I may not have had to. Shame about the dropout. The changing light conditions were fun. At one stage late in the race when the lighting had changed on the tyre bundle after the bus stop, I nearly had a brain fade and didn't recognise my braking point for the bus stop, thinking I was on a different part of the track.

Finally got my pc back together but did not have the chance to work out any pit strategy stuff.

I got rear aero damage on the first lap and at about the 30 minute mark drifted wide into the wall at the sharp left hander and the end of the in-field section and ended up with front aero, engine and suspension damage. And a badly cracked windscreen.

I have no idea how to change pit strategy on the fly so at the halfway mark I just pitted and filled the tank and put on a new set of softs, and went back out with a cracked windscreen, front and rear aero damage, a damaged engine, damaged suspension and about enough fuel to circumnavigate the planet . Needless to say it was a long night for me, but I am pleased that I and my pc was there at the finished.

My next task is to figure out how this pit stop stuff works. lol.

You can use the dpad on your wheel or arrow keys while on track to bring up the pit app, and also to change values.

The keyboard shortcut is the arrow keys. ;)

I have 3 words for my race.
DISASTER!
DISASTER!!
DISASTER!!!

Disaster 1
Brushed the wall on the straight and the engine blew. I couldn't believe this one. I would have expected a little bit of side damage.
Escaped to pits - 289 sec controls locked

Disaster 2
Due to disaster 1 needed to change pit plan. Pit app appeared far right of right screen. I had previously placed it on middle screen where I could see it properly.
Trying to set new plan I took eyes off road too long missed brake point hit wall. Engine blew.
Escaped to pits - 258 secs controls locked.

Disaster 3
7 minutes left in race.
The bumpy track shook the rig so much that one of my "table tops" (the one holding up my button box) tilted itself down. Button box fell on keyboard. Hit wall. Engine blew.

Gave up.

In between I had some good times. I actually like the longer races but this one just wasn't to be.

Sorry Russ, I just had to laugh. The button box falling was the final straw.

With the pit app position, it's in a folder location (stupidly) where it gets overwritten when there's a game update or you verify your files in Steam, so you can lose your settings at that time.

Hwy Wally,
Glad it brightened your day. I was fuming at the time, but I'm over it now :D

As soon as the pit app appeared waaay over there I knew what had happened but it put me off ....
The button box used to be bolted to the wheel hub but the connecting arms snapped off some time ago. The Obutto seat has these "table tops" on each side and they swivel back and forth as well as being able to tilt for placing paperwork or something on them. So I have just had the button box sitting on the right hand table top but this is the first time the vibration has tilted it over. Time to get the allen keys out and do some tightening  ::)

Hey, you have the same rig as me :)

The only thing I have different compared to that picture is that I've swapped the shifter and keyboard swivel thingy to the opposite sides

Hey Shayne,
Good to see that you selected such a good rig. I chose the Obutto because I also use it as a workstation to work from home. Just remove the wheel rim from the hub and it's perfect. I need lots of screen real estate for work.

That wasn't an actual photo of my rig. I just grabbed it off the web due to lack of time. My keyboard is on the other side too and I don't currently have a shifter.
Now that I have a bit more time, here is a real picture ... complete with button box just resting on the table top.
